It was difficult to tell if the person who takes the pastries to the table is really doing something or just wasting my time. I do know that whenever I went to pay, the server had always disappeared -- a real feat in such a small space.

With that said though, I do enjoy various types of homemade style chocolate and that is really what Casa Aramendia brings to the table. Located within the tight alleyways of old town San Sebastian, most may pass it by, but do yourself a favor and bookmark this if you are a chocolate fan as it is worthwhile. The staff is very friendly, speak good English, and more than willing to help you choose some delectable chocolate. While browsing around I'd suggest watching the back room where they are making the chocolate you are eating at the moment or in the process of buying. Like most chocolate stores, they are willing to let you nibble on a few samples to help you decide which bunch you will be devouring. One downside, which is a bad word to use in this case, is the chocolate is not cheap, but trust me it is worth it as the flavors are intense and insanely tasty!

The one gent behind the counter was friendly and spoke English clearly enough to be able to help us tourists get our sweets. I chose the Pistachio, which for a small was a very good portion. Smooth, creamy and with a few pistachios mixed through. Delicious. When he asked if I would also like a macaron with it, how could I say no? The caramel macaron was perfect with the gelato.

When I'm in "beach bum" mode, I typically like to buy a fresh loaf of bread from a bakery, buy some sliced charcuterie or embutidos and a little bit of cheese from a butcher shop, and make my own sandwich to take on the beach for lunch. I came to La Gallofa in search of a small baguette for my sandwich. I was impressed (and also very tempted) by the large selection of freshly baked bread, which included ciabatta, pan gallego, and whole wheat loaves, but managed not to give into temptation. There are also beautifully decorated pastries, as well as some classic hojaldres [1] and palmeritas (some dipped in chocolate!) pastries as well. Judging by the number of people purchasing hojaldres, I'd guess that these are what the bakery does best. If you don't have a sweet tooth (shame on you!), there are also empanadillas and quiche slices available. The bread was perfect for my sandwich with jamon serrano. I loved the light, airy consistency with uneven bubbles and crusty exterior. From location to location, La Gallofa excels in offering baked goods of consistent quality. [1] A popular, flaky pastry.
Items Selected: Pelayo…read moreRosquillas Pastel Valesco Fruit Ring Cream Bun Persian Celebrating a temporary break in the rain by visiting Mount Igueldo and the San Sebastian Aquarium it was with weather again turning stormy that shelter was sought at Hogar Dulce Hogar and with the small dining room packed as the heavens once again burst forth the experience was mostly a good one, a half dozen pastries selected to enjoy at a table with free WiFi with only the dried out fruit ring found to lack. Loosely translated as "Home Sweet Home," the interior cozy with service capable of understanding English though somewhat limited in their ability to explain the goods, it was just prior to 18h00 that I arrived to the bustling cafe and although only a fraction of items were listed in terms of names or prices it was largely a matter of experience that guided my order, a few items plated for now with the rest photographed and rebagged for later. Obviously no longer warm given the time of arrival, most of the items likely sitting on shelves since the bakery opened midday, it was first in bites of an item labeled as "Pelayo" that my palate was entrusted, the almond-crusted cake something like a Pastel Crema fortified with frangipane while the more traditional Pastel Valesco was itself topped in nuts, the interior just short of 'set' and eggy with restrained sweetness. Already mentioning the fruit ring, a laminated 'donut' that may have been good when fresh but clearly here suffering from time left uncovered behind glass, a far better flavor was found in the cinnamon-sugar dusted Rosquillas, the texture not unlike that of a churro with a light crunch to the outside giving way to a wispy open crumb. Relatively straight forward with the cream bun, the dough itself light while insides were more "custard" than the those found elsewhere in Spain, it was finally with a crispy Persian that the tasting concluded and with a similar vanilla texture sandwiched between flaky layers of puff pastry the results were by far the best version of the item found throughout my Basque visit - potentially the best pastry sampled in all of San Sebastian.

The restaurant provides bread and a little tapas (or pintxos) to get you started. This was fresh crusty bread with a soft fluffy center and a small place of sausages. Sidre is the drink to order! I think a whole large (wine bottle size) bottle is only 8€. It's fun to watch it being poured from a height by your server to aerate the beverage for enhanced flavor. It's like apple juice but tart, sour, and so refreshing. The salad of butter lettuce and thinly sliced sweet onions with olive oil and vinegar was perfection. It was so fresh and the dressing was perfect. The main course, the T-bone steak for two was sheer excellence! The steak came on a sizzling platter and was served with potato frites, perfectly simple but delicious! The steak platter continued to sizzle throughout lunch, so the precut steak pieces could be seared or cooked longer if that was desired. The meat is served medium-rare automatically, so the sizzling stone allows you to adjust the cooking of the steak after its served. This was by far the best meal I had in all of Spain. After dinner the server brought over pacharrán shots, an herbal plum-based after dinner aperitif to help with digestion. It's served in frosted shot glasses. We had one and thanked him for it, then maybe we had one more. What a way to end a great meal-with a buzz. This place is a little pricey, but very much worth it. So glad we came here and dined. It's looks humble but the food is the star of the show here!

La Gabarra was the perfect place at the perfect time! The owners were very patient and helped us with our selection. We shared a T-bone steak that was beautifully cooked and delicious, a green salad, and a bottle of wine. We finished the meal with a nice cheese and jam board... If we are in Bilbao again, we will most certainly return to this restaurant! Great food, simply prepared, kind and friendly owners... just can't say enough nice things about this restaurant!
