I first noticed the id art supply name years ago at an outdoor show, then recently stumbled across the actual store--tucked into a plain plaza on 79th Street near Biscayne, not exactly an "artsy" neighborhood. It was closed, but I made a mental note. Normally, I shop online, hunt for deals, and can wait for supplies. But when I wanted to try out some high-end oil pastels right away, I struck out at big box stores and stopped by id art on a whim, with no big expectations. I was blown away. The place is jam-packed floor to ceiling with everything from student supplies to professional-grade paints, oils, pastels, crayons, brushes, and canvases you just don't find elsewhere. Yes, some prices are higher--as with most independents--but the selection is second to none. Best of all, the staff are real artists who know their stuff and genuinely care about getting you what you need. That mattered to me--I don't want to waste time searching when I'm ready to work. When I asked to speak to the manager, he couldn't even bother to return my call. I shouldn't have been surprised since every time I walk into the shop the staff seem to be all hiding or hanging out in the back. Zero customer service. By far the worst shopping experience in my life. It was a saturday when I came to buy my first kit to start painting, i needed advice and the girl didn't help me at all. I asked her what kind of paint should I need to start, her answer was " we have acrylic, water color and oil, what do you want?" That's why I am here for, advices and passionate people. Otherwise I can order on amazon. So I asked her what do you recommend for beginner? "It s up to the artist was the answer". Her show was the same over and over for brush, canvas, accessories. I always had to ask her : what should I buy to start?! But I felt like she didn't want to work, or maybe It was too much effort for her to explain new customers. I spent around 450 usd for my first time, no thank you, no discount, not even a smile. After that I compared their tags they are over price compare to other location in miami area. My fiance and I decided to make a painting for our living room instead of purchasing one which would obviously be super expensive and we most likely would not be as passionate about buying something that someone else made. Why not make your own, right? So we went into this store to pick up our supplies...$350 later I think we got everything that we'll need to make a great piece of art. The person working at the store was friendly and tried to help us find everything that we needed. The music was amazing as they were playing Air & The knife which really helped me set into the artistic mood. They have a good enough supply of everything from the cheaper to high end utensils. We bought a super cheap easel for like $40 too. We will be back now that I read there is a student discount. I wish she would have asked me if I was a student! The only negative is it was super hard for us to find parking here. They have a garage all the way in the back of the building and the art store can validate your parking so it's like $1 but I called to ask about parking and she couldn't understand me for some reason. SO far I have been there twice. The selection is great. As soon as you walk in you can smell all the paints, mediums and canvas'. Which, made me feel like I was in heaven! If you scour around you will find some good deals. I am a novice and just wanted to pick up some essentials. LUCKY for me, all the canvasas were marked down! This meant no stress if my painting came out like chewbacca, (luckily it did not)! :) The staff are knowledgeable, but you have to get their attention. They did try to point me in the direction of some higher priced items, but I reiterated that I didn't really know what I was doing and wasn't ready to buy high end stuff. All in all, it's a great little place, I can't wait to go back! FYI students discount=10% teachers discount=20% What's NOT to love about that!. It's small, but you can find between 3 and 4 brands of whatever you're looking for. Prices are standard. They have an in-house brand of supplies that are pretty cheap; perfect for doing studies or tests before a final piece. I came into the store and I was welcomed however I didn't receive as much help as I would have liked. Short or staff and very busy location where customers are constantly walking in for one item or a frame work done. The staff can be helpful but they seem to look dazed because they cannot give you assistance for so long due to other people needs of assistance which leaves you wondering around the store looking clueless for minutes. I went to this store for the first time today. There was a spanish girl working at the store. Who was rather cold and rude, and was trying to correct my grammer when I asked who was the store owner. She then said you mean what his name is or something to that affect. She was really nice, I noticed to the white customers. I happen to be Afro-Cuban and I was thinking oh no. I like going to ID Art but I'm not a huge fan. They offer a 10% discount for students (You show school ID, give a phone number and BAM, 10% discount every time) Also, they have VERY good sales on things (They have BOGO sales among other things), they also have very cheap pricing on otherwise expensive art equipment. I've visited ID Art everyday for drafting supplies. I love the employees there but sometimes I wish they knew more about the material and could do a little more to help me. Also, if you're going there to buy something, you MUST know your stuff, otherwise they'll try to rip you off or trick you into buying stuff that you don't need. Additionally, I am a UM student, which is apparently a red flag for them, as they followed me around the store obviously trying to prevent me from stealing.
