Interstate 70 is more than just a freeway serving the Denver Metropolitan Area. It is essentially a 2,151 mile land bridge that connects Fort Cove, Utah to Baltimore, Maryland while serving major cities including Denver, Kansas City, Saint Louis, Indianapolis, Columbus, and Wheeling. The reason that I am writing this review is because I have spent some time on Interstate 70. In 2017, it carried me to and from Denver International Airport and up to the Rockies. As it turns out funny enough, this year it carried me between Saint Louis International Airport and downtown Saint Louis. My relationship with I-70 goes back to the late 1990s when my brother lived close to it in Terra Haute Indiana. During those years we'd ride it in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana when we'd do the drive from Long Island, NY to Terra Haute, Indiana. From our time driving on I-70 in the late 1990s to the late 2010s, one thing that has stayed consistent is that I-70 is always playing catch up and is in a constant state of construction. I think one of the major problems is that it should of been built a 6 to 8 lane road where topography permits. I write this because whenever there has been paving work in certain regions, a major east to west Interstate is reduced to one lane of traffic each direction. For a major continental Interstate that is unacceptable. I remember sitting in a brutal traffic jam in rural Ohio on account of this. Fast forward to Denver, it was obvious that the freeway could not handle the traffic capacity. It felt like that any moment one additional car merging onto the freeway could cause a standstill. I could only imagine what rush hour is like at the mouse trap interchange (in Las Vegas we call our multi interstate interchange the Spaghetti Bowl). In the next few years Denver I-70 traffic will only get worse when the freeway is torn apart for the Central 70 project that will lower it 30 feet below ground with numerous improvements. This summer when we rode it in Saint Louis, it was under construction northwest of downtown. Here, the major project is a reversible lane. In the mountains, whether it be the Rockies or the Appalachians I have my fond memories of I-70. Up in the mountains away from the cities and suburbs, it is an engineering marvel that has bridged Colorado and Southern Pennsylvania. Examples of these highway engineering marvels include the Swell in Utah, Glenwood Canyon, and Eisenhower Tunnel which has the distinction of being the highest point of the Interstate system. The scenery that I-70 climbs and transverses in the Rockies and Appalachian Mountains is just breathtaking. I-70 is probably the worse interstate highway I've ever been! Yesterday, I'd spent more time in the car than actually skiing! It only takes about 1.5 hours tops (with light traffic) to get there, but recently it has been taking about 3-4 hours to reach Copper, and 4-6 hours to come back to Denver! Yesterday, there were no accidents, driving conditions were decent but for some reason it took an eternity going and coming back! They had closures all the way from Dillon to the tunnels, causing people to take shortcuts through smaller towns, exceeding speed limits elevating the risk of accidents. read more

I-70 East - Public Transportation Near Me

My GPS hated this road so much, she made-up exits to get off of it as soon as possible. When were these roads last paved? Because I'm willing to fork over tax payer money to have the lanes on a spa day as soon as possible. Not to mention trucks with a random assortment of crap tied up together with a piece of string, hanging off with essentially no reinforcement and the driver barging forward at +65mph speeds. I can't imagine any of that is legal. And I don't want to imagine what it'd be like having that fly right into my windshield at ungodly speeds. Apparently, this road will take you all the way out East. Just don't expect the car to make it there all in one piece. Unless Maryland's end looks a lot better than ours. read more

Most people have a love/hate relationship with this highway. This the most direct route from the mountains going back to Denver so it can get very crowded, especially during the winter ski season or at certain summer holidays. Ive traversed this highway system countless number of times in all weather conditions and seasons. For the most part when I have driven on it, its smooth sailing all the way, but there have been some times that Ive been stuck on it for as long as 3 hours ( Frisco to Denver is usually around 1.5 hr drive). Dear I-70, I don't normally use this word, but I hate you. I sat in traffic this weekend for 8 hours. 2 1/2 of which was spent just trying to reach you. Kat A and I finally had to pull over and veg out at the Dam Brewery in Dillon because of your closure. Why? Why did you close when the weather wasn't that bad? Why didn't you tell us sooner? Don't get me wrong, I'm happy you opened up, finally, at 8:45 PM but you should have told us prior to 4:45 PM that you were closed. Like how about a notification when you actually closed the hour before? You are currently not my friend. When I can, I will always use your rival, Loveland Pass. Pay more taxes then...spoiled Americans. Roads cost money. Have you looked at the Geography of I-70 through the mountains? It's a marvel that it was even constructed. If you avoid the Weekend crowd during certain hours it's fine. read more
