The moment I walked in to Apna Chat Bhavan, the smell transported me back to the days when my…read morehusband and I lived in India. I read somewhere that this little Indian eatery is the most Indian of Indian restaurants in Portland. That made me eager to try it. The space is half restaurant, where you walk up to the counter to order, and half Indian grocery. In between they have a large case with chat (snacks) and sweets (every kind of Indian sweet you can imagine) as well as fancy looking slices of cakes and pastries. This isn't your average Indian restaurant with sitar music, fancy decor and high prices. This is where to go with a family, or a casual meal with great prices and generous portions. Food is served on paper plates on plastic trays and you bus your own table. The first thing we had while waiting for our food was mango lassi. Wow! I've consumed (and made at home) many of those but these were some of the best! Perfect amount of mango and the consistency was great! Loved it! My husband was starving so he chose a bun filled with chicken from the case. It was tasty. I don't know what it's called. I wanted a masala dosa though. They have quite a few kinds on the menu. Working and traveling in India I never came across so many kinds. I opted for a Mysore Masala Dosa. The helpful woman behind the counter explained they have more flavorful spices added to this kind of dosa. My husband ordered the goat korma, which was on a little daily special sign on the counter. My dosa came out fairly quickly. I don't think I've ever had a larger one! See my photo! There was ample potato filling inside as well. Soft and delicious with onion, peas & carrots, like it's supposed to. The Mysore spice was ok but just heavily sprinkled on inside the dosa which made it a little dry. Sambar always comes with dosas-a beautiful tasting soup. I wished they were more generous with that. They only gave me a tiny cupful. Green & red chutneys came with it too. They were fine but not that amazing. My husband's goat curry took a long time to arrive! I was halfway or more through my giant dosa before it was finally ready. I didn't try it and also forgot to take a photo. Sorry. He said it was flavorful and the meat was tender. As in most traditional Indian goat curries, there were small bits of bone and also some significant pieces of fat. But the portion was generous and lots of rice came alongside it too. He took some of both home. We were too full for sweets, but I did a little shopping in the store after. Here's a little tip for you: Don't buy spices (of most kinds) at the supermarket. Buy them at an Indian store-they are always a great deal. I bought whole peppercorns for my pepper mill for a great price (Sorry Penzy's) and some others. But I felt like I struck it rich finding mango Shrikand in the freezer case! Woohoo! We used to eat that at a restaurant when we lived in Pune, India. We took it home with us. I had to knock off a star because our food wasn't ready at the same time. Bummer. I'd give it 4 1/2 if I could. I can see where some would mark them down because it isn't fancy, but this little place made me happy and I want to go back for more.

Vanakkam brought an absolute feast down from Portland to Eugene for our wedding. They not only transported a huge buffet, but also did live dose (dosa) and even added a live appetizer station last minute, fearing that the appetizers would be soggy. That means they were cooking on a huge griddle, cranking out crispy dose, frying paneer 65, wok-tossing gobi manchurian, all on the spot. Every single dish was SO GOOD. Our guests said it was the best food they had ever had at a wedding. People are still raving about it. We had many guests from India who were thrilled as well. Ganesh at Vanakkam was a pleasure to work with throughout the process. So responsive, kind and understanding, and his staff worked incredibly hard. It honestly blew us away. You should hire Vanakkam for your special event. 5 stars is not enough. 20 maybe. (This event just happened, but I'll update this review with mouthwatering pictures as soon as I have some...)

This restaurant, located in a strip mall area, doesn't really seat that many people, but for less than $16, you can experience a really amazing lunch buffet option here. Seriously, for the price of your average food cart entree these days, you can have an all-you-can-eat, high-quality, high-variety lunch. And this restaurant doesn't just churn out the basic stuff, either. You might get a bhindi masala, or goat biryani, along with some of the more typical plates like butter chicken. They mix it up, which is the sign of a great buffet. Honestly, they do something truly special with their tandoori chicken. I'm normally pretty lukewarm on that entree, but Vanakkam's version is a really sensational one. Samosas, Naan, Raita, etc. all available too. I hope they can keep this going at this price, and if so, we'll soon be a regular, no doubt!

We also had the opportunity to meet Suresh, a kind and enthusiastic owner. Here on the west side of Portland in Washington County we have an abundance of restaurants specializing in South Asian/Indian cuisine. In my experience a third are wonderful, a third mediocre, and a third worth skipping. From looking at the various reviews here on Yelp for this location it appears they're highly polarized; it's love or hate. I would rate Hyderabad Hub's Hillsboro location in the mediocre category, somewhere in between. We ordered the mega Mandi platter. Asked for our choice of meat we picked goat since we eat chicken, beef, and pork most other times. What we were not told was that the mega Mandi platter serves about five people with a very generous amount of rice and meat. I've attached the actual photo of our mega Mandi platter when it was delivered to our table. We wish we were told upfront the sheer size of our ordered platter since there were only two of us. The $60 price was a bit of a surprise after we ate and paid the tab. Goat meat by nature is quite bony with both large and small bones within the meat morsels. Our platter came with several kinds of goat meat preparations from a full shank to bone-in pieces as well as soft shredded goat meat. I forgot what a dental minefield eating bone-in goat is, even pieces that did not at first appear to have any bones of any size. The goat meat was overly salty and the garam masala mixture was added with a heavy hand. It was too much - not necessarily in a spicy manner - but just the density, heaviness, and lack of nuanced subtlety. Both the rice and meat had a monolithic taste. It would've also been nice to have more vegetables in there, especially red onions. The carrot slices were too large and should've been julienned in there. The side condiments were decent, and it was especially nice that they offered to make a falooda beverage as we were leaving. The service was good, the facilities clean and well-lit, and the hospitality was great. The food was mediocre and overpriced, and we do not plan on coming back anytime soon at least to the Tanasbourne location. This was our first time at any of the Hyderabad Hub locations. We have yet to try the 185th location, Tigard location, or any food cart offerings. Suresh (the owner) did mention that they have an 8:30am-11:00am breakfast service on the weekends, so we may try that out sometime just to give the place a second chance. UPDATE: Changed review from 3 stars to 2 for our dining experience at this location upon further consideration.

They are also popular with takeout and delivery. I actually really enjoyed my Lamb Vindaloo Tacos! The lamb was tender and it did have a good amount of spice. But this time, I wanted to try something different. I love lamb, so I decided to try their Lamb Curry and asked for the spice level to be very mild. What really sets this place apart from the other Indian curry spot I normally go to, though, is the service. An elderly gentleman took our order and overheard my husband and I talking about how we had never tried saag before and didn't know what it was. Early on they were very friendly and they even invited me to the cart door to show how they cooked the naan bread once. However, their mobile ordering system has been routinely frustrating and after my experience yesterday and today I'm not interested in dealing with them any longer. They've had us bounce from UberEats to Joyous then to Door Dash apps for ordering. I placed a lunch order yesterday through door dash and all looked great (never mind that they have two listings on Door Dash and one of them is "Prince of Spice" and the other is "Pinch of Spice" which is really sketchy), the order completed, I was charged $33 (ikr), and it showed I could pick up my food in about 20 minutes. When I arrived the cart was closed and the worker who was in there was doing organizational stuff and no cooking was going on. I knocked and asked and he didn't speak english. He called someone else to have him talk to me over the phone, but that guy didn't speak any English either. After about 10 minutes of me asking them to repeat themselves and speak slower, I finally figured out that they were telling me that they were closed all day, it was a Thursday. Why don't they update their schedule on their ordering apps? So I then went to Door Dash app and tried to cancel the order. The app said they would review and let me know by email in an hour. I never received an email from DD. So this morning I try to go and refund the order through the DD app and it denied it. So then around 11am I start thinking, "well maybe my original order is still in the cart restaurant's system and I can call them and get it today instead." So I called the cart and got one of them. I explained the situation but couldn't understand them again. I repeated my name a couple of times thinking that would help him find the order from yesterday in his system. Then finally thought he was asking what was in the order so I mentioned the 2 dishes and he said "oh ok! I make for you.", which I foolishly thought meant he found the order and would now complete it. I asked when it would be ready and he said "20 minutes". So I show up again today and he pulls the bag out and points to the pay iPad that says $32. I tried to explain that I had already paid yesterday for it and I showed him the order on Door Dash. He looked at my phone then called someone else. Probably the same guy as the day before. They spoke in Indian for a bit then he handed me the phone and I tried to explain to the other guy on the phone again. The guy on the other end told me that they had cancelled the order and that I needed to get a refund from Door Dash. I left with no food again and still out $33. So I then called DD support. Grok came through clutch with the number because the DD app doesn't give it away that I could find. And after getting through the AI gatekeeper to a live person she told me that they are unable to refund because the restaurant said that they completed the order and gave me the food. And that the order was not cancelled by the restaurant. The DD rep asked me if I had taken a photo of the closed business or if I had a screenshot of a text conversation with them about it being closed and I don't since I just spoke to them and didn't even think to take a photo of the closed cart. Remember to do this for future issues. She said that because if DD issues the refund it will be taken from the restaurant's earnings so they need proof to be able to contest the restaurant's claims. She then said that she would call the restaurant and discuss it with them. She put me on hold for about 10 minutes then came back. She said she tried several times but they did not answer. I asked her what number she called and it was the same phone number that I had called an hour earlier and immediately got someone at the restaurant/cart. I can't prove this but I assume they know the Door Dash phone number and so they just ignore it so they can keep the money for the order they lied about cancelling. So I'm out $33 and two lunches, but Pinch/Prince of Spice is now out a loyal customer for a measly $33. Note: I've lived in multiple foreign countries and I've always made an effort to learn at least the basics of the language of the country I'm in and how to pronounce it correctly enough so they can understand me. And when I haven't been able to learn fast enough I've used translator apps. Pinch/Prince of Spice has made ZERO effort to provide the basics of customer service beyond get money, give food. Note 2: this review isn't about Door Dash, but I will say their support process is way more complicated and frustrating than other apps I have used. The Customer Support Rep, Rucha was excellent and she did her best when I finally got connected with her.
