Being from portland this spot was a little out of the way in hilsboro but boy was it worth the drive! The service was great and the food was even better! The space was clean and felt like a cozy but modern spot that was nice to sit in. They really do give you both quality AND quantity. We definitely over ordered as the prices seemed very good and we got wayyy better portions than we anticipated, plenty for leftovers. Not to mention the quality was still excellent! Some of the most tender goat curry out there, crispy fresh dosa, fried to order and crispy gobi manchurian, and an absolutely delicious house special chicken biryani which comes with enough rice to feed a family! This was my first time coming here with my family for my birthday and we loved it. The butter masala fries were a great start. And the chili tofu was something you have to get. The Shezwan noodles were authentic and spot on. The paneer biryani stole the spotlight for sure. We loved the balance with the curry and the rice and how authentic the flavor was. Also we were pleasantly surprised with the portion. We got the family pack with the biryani thinking we'd just get one big bowl. Instead we got 2!! Definitely was more than enough for us 6 with leftovers and it wasn't something that was quantity over quality it was actually good too Great service and a great ambiance on the inside. I will start this review by stating Jalsa was incredible and deserves the 5 star rating they have garnered. The 4 stars that I have given Jalsa is a personal taste thing that I struggle with...ha ha. My issue is that I don't like any spice. Smriti was extremely and knowledgeable. We have been wanting to come this restaurant for some time, and have tried on Tuesday, but now they are open that day. I made it clear to Smriti that I was negative 1 when he inquired about heat level My wife is a 2. The portions appeared to be huge, and a lot of leftovers. She loved her Channa Marsala and the Samosa. She did comment that her dish had more sauce?? I had the Butter Chicken, and it was just too spicy for me. The same with the Corn Chaat, it beautifully prepared, but still too spicy for me. We also enjoyed the Garlic and Butter Naan's So Good. The excellent teamwork is noticeable. There's a delicious new Indian restaurant in downtown Hillsboro called Jalsa. It's located in the spot formerly occupied by Top Burmese. I've enjoyed several meals from Jalsa and the food has always been good. I especially enjoyed their potato masala dosa. My roommate loved their malai kofta. Their gobi manchurian had very nice flavor but was super crunchy. Their samosa channa chaat was mostly dough so wouldn't get that again. Their veggie kurma was tasty. Overall, the food is good with some items more to my liking than others. Jalsa does offer delivery thru Grubhub, which is always convenient. If you enjoy Indian cuisine, Jalsa is definitely worth trying. read more

tl;dr? : "Holy cow in every possible way. Our new favorite Indian place" Friday night date night with Wife N finds us smack dab in the middle of downtown Hillsboro and she noted "Hey, there's this new Indian place that looks promising just up the street." 6:00pm found us as walk-ins to Jalsa, just catty-corner from the county courthouse. It wasn't particularly busy (yet) so we were seated immediately. We ordered two Mango Lassi's to start. On most dishes you order a spicing to your preference on a one (mild) to 5 (very hot) scale. For mains she ordered her customary Butter Chicken (1-mild), and I ordered a Lamb Curry (4-Hot). We also ordered Naan and Garlic Roti (crispy bread). Everything arrived and we started digging in. One thing stood out immediately: these didn't taste like everyone else's. You know how butter chicken is pretty much the same butter chicken everywhere? Not here. They've got some very unique spices in their dishes that I've never experienced elsewhere, nor could I Identify. Okay, game on. The lamb curry was stunning in its flavors. I like things spicy, and Jalsa did not disappoint this white dude one bit. It was exactly the spicing level I wanted and a wide swath of mysterious flavors swirled beneath the heat. Naan drop. This is the best red curry I've ever eaten. Butter chicken: yeah, same experience. Different set of mystery flavors, all harmoniously coating the chicken in luscious buttery goo. I will say that even at the "1-mild" level, there was noticeable, lasting heat on the tongue. I asked where the point was when "most Americans think it's almost too spicy" and the reply was "somewhere between 2 and 3". For those with severely heat-averse palettes, they may not be a good fit. The rest of you will probably discover in Jalsa your new favorite Indian restaurant. My, my Hillsboro. Your downtown core is growing up in the culinary world. This is now one of at least ten different ethnic genres where to find an excellent pick, I no longer need to travel to Portland. As we left (around 7:15) , I glanced around and it was probably 75% full to capacity, so you might want to look into reservations. Absolutely the best Indian we've eaten. We checked out Jalsa on a cold winter day and it really hit the spot. The food here was so good! We got a chicken tikka masala, tadka dahl, apollo fish and an order of roti. I think they can get quite spicy if you want - we stuck with the mildest, 1 out of 5 and thought it was just enough for us to feel a touch of heat. At some places mild is basically not spicy at all but this was not the case here, so it was just right. I would definitely come back to try more food, dine in or take out. read more

Hillsboro hasn't had an issue attracting quality Indian and Indian-fusion establishments. Retaining them has been another story. I'm really hoping Jalsa breaks that streak, and early crowds indicate it will. When my family first moved to Western Washington County, they talked about all of the great first-generation Indian places there were and how restaurants like Maharaja, Virundu and Chennai Masala reminded them of the first places they went to in Edison, N.J., just before it became an Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi hub in the late '80s and early '90s. Throughout the years, however, we saw a younger generation of chefs plying their trade and creating far more inventive menus. Chaat Cafe on Third never took off the way it should, but its wraps-and-apps approach and even its counter-serve, grab-and-go approach to picking up a meal and mango lassi was ahead of its time here. Southern Spice was more of a Portland bar than a suburban restaurant when it opened on Imbrie prior to the pandamic, and its dosas and decor made it a destination before COVID knocked everything out and the things that made it special didn't travel well. And Top Burmese was a great introduction to Indo-Chinese cuisine for the area, even if the town never quite wrapped its mind around Burmese food, the inventive menu of wings, curries, and other favorites that caught on in Portland and Beaverton, or the robot servers. Jalsa?! Well it's really difficult not to like or understand Jalsa. Even if you know nothing about Indo-Chinese cuisine, Southern Indian cuisine, or playful bar foods, Jalsa's really making it easy for diners to get to know it. If you're an old pro, the biryani, dosa, and mirchi chat are going to serve you well. It's not going all the way back to lunch-crowd tiffins like Virundu did in the same space before it, but that's because it clearly has different designs on what it wants the space to be. At its best, the Top Burmese here functioned as perhaps the best higher-end bar in the city. It could draw people in, it had a lovely cocktail menu, and it had a layer of formality to it that read more like a date night than, say, the nearby bars, the brewpub across the street, or even the short-lived Mexican cocktail bar. Eating our way through the top of the menu for its first few weeks: The tikka disco fries, the mac and cheese, the tikka nachos, the samosas... this is fun, quality bar food that you might expect from, say, Bollywood Theater. It's something that can serve as training wheels for a market like Hillsboro, but a unique little starter for folks who are just going to dig into the hakka noodles, fried rice, and samosas. I initially mourned the fact that Hillsboro couldn't support something as widely accepted as a Top Burmese, but Jalsa proves that we got something better in return--an establishment and kitchen that knows its market, knows what it's fussiest about, knows how to work past those fears, and knows how to bring people in. My biggest complaint is that it's been too busy for sit-down service on weekends since opening, which is a really nice issue to have. I really want Jalsa to receive a better fate than some of the beloved places I've named earlier, so I plan to take advantage of the feature that's a rarity here in Hillsboro: Its reservation platform. It's been a pleasant surprise, and I'd like it to stick around a while. read more

I don't know how people are so fucking stupid. I work in fine dining, so I know what good service is. I confirmed two separate times on the phone that my order would come with mint sauce/chutney and it was confirmed. Only for me to come to the front desk and see that the itemized receipt stapled to my bag had no mention of mint chutney. When I asked about confirmation of such item in my bag, nobody knew whether I had the ingredients I ordered and paid for or not. I just don't understand, things are so expensive these days and I don't have to spend my money at places like this, I could have chosen to go anywhere else. Do better. Including a side sauce that was ordered and paid for is not that hard for you, but it is incredibly frustrating as a customer to trust that my order is correct only to get home and find out that I don't have all the things that I paid for. read more

There was another dish - a creative macaroni pasta dish from their little plates menu - that was so flavorful. Just outstanding.
