There are not many hotels to choose from while visiting Sumter so when I did my research it was between this hotel and another. The Hyatt won by default due to the word roach being mentioned in a review for the other hotel I was eyeing. This location is located in downtown Sumter on Main street. It's a newer hotel built in 2018, the first of the Hyatt branded hotels built in the city of Sumter. You can tell they are trying to revitalize the area. There are a few niche stores and restaurants within walking distance. Other than that I wouldn't stray too far away from the hotel especially not a night. We checked in on a Thursday evening. The staff was professional and friendly. I assumed breakfast was included with the room since at Hyatt Place it usually is and the last time my husband stayed at this location it was included. The lady behind the counter communicated that as of the prior Monday they no longer included breakfast with your stay unless you purchased a room with it added on or they could add it for $8 per person. I declined the breakfast which is over at 9:30am. I would never make it to eat that early and frankly the room rate is over priced if it does not include breakfast but I digress. Parking is located on the side of the hotel in both a garage and in the parking lot with a guest pass. I saw police patrolling the area so I felt safe. There is a side entrance into the hotel accessible with a room key. The hotel was very clean and had a pleasant smell. I always wipe everything down when staying at a hotel first and found our room to be super clean. A refrigerator is in each room and a microwave is on each floor in front of the elevator. My only issue with my stay was the water pressure in the shower was low and the water was luke warm to coldish our entire stay. Overall we had a pleasant experience, I would most likely stay here again while in town. read more

Love the staff. From the front desk to housekeeping everyone has been welcoming and gone out of their way to be helpful. Housekeeping saw me trying to open my door with my hands full, and she came from a different hallway to help me. That's the employees I would want too. Their breakfast offers fruit, yogurt, granola, Canadian bacon, crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, assortment of breads and more. The rooms are clean and spacious. The location is in the heart of Sumter. Always something going on down here. There was a car show two blocks away yesterday. We didn't hear any road noise while trying to sleep. This was much better than when we stayed in the hotels off the highway. We will be back. read more

I'd say this is your best bet when staying in Sumter. Right on Main Street near good restaurants and coffee shops. Free garage parking. Small pool and average breakfast. Rooms were large and clean. Bar downstairs was nice for a night cap or cup of coffee. Average bathrooms. Mini frig and comfy beds. TV wasn't great quality ,but didn't really need it. read more

Cross your arms left over right. Now extend each of your index fingers. That's exactly what's going on here when you make a request or need help with something. Someone is looking for another to do their duties. There is a question about how well the room was cleaned and when requesting room service after day 3...nothing happened. Even though I heard the manager radio to housekeeping and give the room number for cleaning. Came back that evening and it was just as it was before. At this point you're tired and just want to shower and go to bed right? Nope, the sink was still draining really slow and towels were needed. There was a lady in the hall with the cart for clean towels so that was easy to rectify without filling out a request in triplicate. She then called the on-duty maintenance guy who basically poured about a gallon of drain cleaner into the sink. Well...it worked. The sink was no longer draining slow and if it was that easy, why wasn't it done between 11a and 1p when I was out? I dunno and they don't know either. Breakfast is self-serve with gloves for sanitation. There is some heat and serve breakfast sandwiches, yogurt, cut fruit, milk, assorted juices, cereals as options. Prior to COVID, I'm told there is more of a heartier spread. Bring your own hand sanitizer. The gallon jugs they have are so old they've become cloudy and look questionable. There is a mini-mart area to buy snacks and tea and coffee station. When making an effort to get my steps in, I took the stairs. This is another area that needs some periodic cleaning as there were a few dead bugs and leaves scattered inside the stairwell. Placards for their parking garage are issued and it's right next door. I did see a uniformed security guard patrolling and looking busy. A few dining options within walking distance for to go or dine in. Not a terrible property but it's evident that the employees do what they want when they want if they feel like it. The manager's frustration is thinly veiled and well-deserved as some changes are long overdue if this property wishes to stay a viable choice. P.S....it's only 3 years old. read more

So for being located in the small town of Sumter, you probably wouldn't expect such a modern and posh hotel. Right from it's first appearance, Hyatt Place, has a lot to offer the weary traveler. So far it's one of my favorite places as there is just enough right outside the front doors to keep you entertained on a short trip or stay. Rooms here are very modern, clean, and comfortable. Our room had a great view of an old brick building that looked almost like a picture window. The breakfast is definitely one of the best hotel meals I have had while on the road. There is a nice variety of eggs, bacon, potatoes, and fruit to choose from. If you are staying multiple days you won't get bored because they vary the menu every morning. Make sure to add it to you stay if it's not already included and you like waking up to a nice meal. There is also a nice private pool to relax by after a long day at work. For active travelers there is a decent size gym to get your reps on and crush some cardio before you head out to dinner. Enjoy! read more

I have stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions when I visit Sumter, SC. I stayed when it first opened to a very recent stay. I will say that the hotel has gone down in the time it has been open. Not good since it opened in 2018 as far as the work ethic of some of the staff. The management is great and the front door staff is also but it is the housekeeping/maintenance staff that I have issues with. This may seem petty but when you get back to your room you want to relax. Everything cannot be blamed on covid or minimum staff because none of that should have an impact on customer service or when a person needs to do their job. I had an issue with my room with one being that it was not cleaned and a repair issue. On both these occasions the person came by my room after 8PM. Now if I have been out all day and all of a sudden it is 8PM when it seems fit to come by to address the issue then right there they are telling your time is not very important as I had work to finish for my job. I did speak to the manager about and she was very helpful and offered me points but it was how the housekeeping staff answered her that I think is part of the problem. She asked why the room was not cleaned and her answer was "I was working all yesterday and cleaned this many rooms." First that was not the question and you never know who is around and can hear you. If this is how they come back to answer the manager then it is easy to see the uncaring aspect that has resulted in the decline of this hotel. I don't envy the management and staff who have to answer issues of those who are overwhelmed by their jobs. The issue comes to the fact that as customers more is being charged while offering less. Still this hotel is one of the better ones to stay at in Sumter and I hope that is not taken advantage of because of the limited picks in the area. For someone visiting out of town this is the first and possible only representation they may get for the area. read more

Overall opinion: The hotel is nice but make sure your credit card is correctly charged upon check out. This place has spacious rooms that are great to host families or couples. I love that their rooms come with a small couch that doubles as a pull out. The weekend I visited the hyatt was experiencing a towel shortage so you had to make friends with the cleaning crew or make several requests at the front desk for the towels. A fact that I did not learn until Sunday. Hotel staff only cleans rooms after your 3rd night of stay unless requested. So if you need fresh towels or cleaning ask the staff the morning of or approach the cleaning lady. The elevator down button stopped functioning and they required individuals to go up and then down. Breakfast was individually wrapped breakfast items such as muffins, Jimmy Dean, cereal, ftuit, or yogurt. Only shared items is the occasional potato, bacon, or soft boiled eggs. The reservations for our stay were made over the phone and through a system glitch or error our reservation weren't correct upon arrival. The staff was super gracious and helped us resolve the issue so we could still have 2 rooms for 3 nights. Come Sunday morning while waiting for new towels to hit the pool the cleaning lady informs me that she has our room on the check out list and thus no towels to give us. I'm quite confused since we had resolved on Friday to check out Monday morning. The staff also did not make mention of checking out earlier when I requested towels for the pool. I go downstairs to correct the issue but the front desk states they can change the reservation again but the price was not set since Sunday night was more money. I call customer service online to file a complaint since they initially messed up the reservation. Cool that gets straightened out and the bill is back to the original quoted price. All good. No issues. We get to hang out at the pool, with only 3 towels for our party of 5 but whatever we are making the best of the situation. That evening the front desk had towels waiting for us so we went to the pool again. Okay I check out Monday and pay the bill. It's the exact price I'm quoted and I give a glowing review to the hotel manager about how great the staff was helping us along the way. I check my credit card statement to pay my bill and I have an extra $178 miscellaneous charge from hyatt. I call the hotel to resolve this and ask why my card was charged. They state they have no records of the extra charges. Welp I call my credit card company to dispute it. read more

I will agree that the shower and atmosphere was great. I stayed there from Oct 14 to the 17th, 2021 for the funeral services of a family member. My mom is from Sumter and we were planning to host our family reunion there which may change. Everything was fantastic from customer service, rates, etc. I did not expect to become a meal to bed bugs which I did. The Hyatt was great and comped my stay but I lost complete trust in a brand and a brand experience that I relied on. During that stay, I also could not get clean towels. I was often told that the hotel did not have any fresh towels. Which seems to explain why other linens aren't being washed. My mom's credit card was not charged the correct rate. read more

This spot is a good location to downtown. You can walk around for food and drinks. I love the rooms and the shower was amazing. The breakfast was not good at all for the price of the room. They really need to be ashamed at that so called breakfast. It was for elementary kids. read more

Solid little hotel, brand new and with excellent accommodations. This Hyatt Place was built & opened about 2 to 3 weeks before I arrived here, and one could really tell the 'brand-new' feeling everywhere as you walked around. The beds were very comfortable, they had a salt pool, gourmet snacks (such as big house-baked cookies and Starbucks bottled drinks), and convenient offerings such deodorant and shaving cream (many on-the-house), just in case you forgot some essential. Sumter is a great little historic town, with a couple things to do, it has also been revitalized not long ago, so it'll offer you a great sense of Americana and a centralized theatre stage, right in front of the hotel. It's also a great little creative epicenter to explore around from, before returning to your warm Hyatt Place mattress. This one is definitely a #recommend. Cheers. read more

Disgusting. My room (510) was gross when I checked in. My company had booked a king and they had oversold them so I got a room with 2 queens. They had obviously not cleaned the room. An orange sauce stain on the outlet, dirty fingerprints on the door knob and doorstop, and nasty dirt on the sheets. The girl at the front desk said there was nothing she could do because no housekeeping. I said maybe you can come up and wipe the stuff. She said I could do it and gave me wipes and new sheets. So I'm checking in to Hyatt place and being out right to work. Disgusting. I'm gonna go back to my good ol Hilton hotels. read more

I had to the most enjoyable stay at Hyatt Place in Sumter. The accommodations were superb. All staff members that I encountered was friendly and demonstrated an eagerness to assist- I really felt the warmth of their kindness. Also worth mentioning is that the hotel is located downtown in close proximity to some good restaurants and other businesses. The city of Sumter has did a good job rehabbing this downtown area, a real gem. Big question....would I choose to stay here again? Most definitely, without a doubt I would. read more

Disclaimer: I had a terrible stay here, but it was handled amicably and professionally. So, this rating is despite my bad time. I was here for my best friend's wedding. No rooms were ready when we arrived at 2:30. Fair enough, check is at three. But. Okay. Parking is easy--just there in the garage. Newer establishment and you can tell. Breakfast bar was pleasantly surprising. My friends loved the grits. However, baked items (think: monkey bread, waffles) just were not warm and they should opt for the cook your own option. Second room had dirty towels and hair in the tub, so kind of grossed out by that. Overall, nobody really travels to Sumter so this might be your best (read: only) option, but at least you'll have a decent breakfast. read more

I would be remiss if I did not share the following with corporate Hyatt as the health of prospective guests are at risk. I recently was a guest at this hotel. Arrived at 2 pm, paid for assistance with luggage at approximately 2 pm. Left hotel immediately after registering for family visit in Bishopville. Returned approximately 9 to 9:30--unpacked and noticed vent -see photo. Phoned front desk and night auditor said another person on third floor phoned about same thing. I was so tired I really did not want to move to another room. Then turned down bed and found dirty soiled linen--see photo. Phone filthy see photo. Phoned night auditor and she came to help me move to fourth floor. She identified sheets had NOT been changed and mold. Shared scenario over the last four years regarding airconditioning and are possibly in litigation with New York AC company. I am sharing this as my concern is that legionaires disease and other diseases may impact the lives of unsuspecting guests. Manager also verified multifaceted issues and verified everything I have discussed. Owner on site and he could care less about the issue I brought forth for his attention. Newer hotel downtown Sumter. Three decent restaurants within walking distance. The breakfast buffet is pretty good but then I am a picky breakfast eater. At lunch I had the Mac and cheese with barbecue pulled pork. It was quite good. Another day I had the avocado toast with an egg on top and it was delicious. If I could give (negative 5) starts I would. Where do I start. Walked up to the check in desk and over-herd how great the hotel representative was giving the guest in line before me. When my turn came all the great service went out the window. She looked over her glasses with a judgmental stare, and said "can I help you". She was very condescending for no reason when answering my questions. When she asked rudely for my ID. I gave her my Sheriffs County / Officer badge. The light came on, she fumbled and started stuttering and then begin to give me the same great customer service like the guest before me. Not sure why she would treat me this way. Maybe it was the tired look on my face or wrinkled outfit after driving 19 hours to Sumter SC. It gets worse, the next morning I went out to begin filming. I received several calls from a 803 number I didn't recognize. I couldn't answer because I was so busy filming. During filming I decided to stop filming and answer the call. It was the front desk telling me we removed all of your items from the room and placed them in a bag.... (TRASH BAG). They said I didn't have a 2nd night reservation so we didn't know if you were coming back. We booked your room for another guest. But the guest canceled, and we put the bag with your items back in the room. At the time I couldn't respond all I heard was my items were back in my room and I have the 2nd night reservation. Got back to the hotel room later that night and yes all of my items were in a trash bag waiting for me. I should have taken a picture but this experience was horrible coming for this brand of Hotel. NEVER will I stay at a Hyatt again. I will tell all my officers to do the same... This was embarrassing to no end. No one apologized, nobody cared to address the issue. I'm done!!!! read more

We blocked rooms for our sons wedding in October and just got back from staying there for another wedding. This hotel has always been very clean, professional, friendly and accommodating towards both group stays. I have been very impressed both times! Also the location is fantastic. This place has been a wonderful stay during the COVID-19 pandemic. The check-in was very quick and seamless with almost zero contact (had to review my driver's license and credit card). A Tuesday night stay during Thanksgiving week has been quiet and relaxing. The price for 1 night (the length of my stay) was reasonable for an up to date, modern hotel in the heart of a small city. Two things kept this rating from being a rating. #1 Being that this is a newer hotel, not having a microwave oven in each room is a let down. But what makes it worse is that during a pandemic, there is a community shared microwave oven on each floor across from the elevators. This is not the time for anyone to be sharing in community appliances or anything for that matter. #2 As petty as this may sound, the bathroom sink drains extremely slow and therefore the water builds up very quickly and ALL the scum, sludge, soap, etc floats on top of the water and leaves that disgusting ring of ewwwww around the sink bowl and it's gross. Do not accidentally drop anything in the sink while this is happening or you will regret it (and will probably be shopping for new items if you have to use it for your mouth, lol). Would I stay here again in the future? Absolutely! As long as things don't ever change for the worse. read more

Had a very enjoyable stay here the past weekend. The staff is extremely friendly and courteous. They are very accommodating with any requests - including making us the most delicious late night sandwiches and salad. The breakfast was really a surprise. It was included in the room cost so I wasn't expecting much. But this was super fresh and didn't feel like that generic, processed breakfast you might get at another hotel. It was yummy. This is a very clean and fresh smelling hotel. Clean is the most important quality I look for in a hotel . The down side to this hotel is no hot water, the room keys did not work , and they charged our credit card 3 times. This was after we had reservations for the previous week with a confirmation . We were packed and driving to South Carolina the hotel called said they had over booked and had no rooms available . We turned around drove home unpacked rescheduled all our meetings . read more
