This was a very clean and organized Hy-Vee. When we visited other Midwest states, such as Wisconsin, the local grocery stores usually have a designated sections for local brands and/or local farmers' produce and baked goods. With that mentality, I was hoping to find several notable Iowa brands such as Sterzing's, Amana Meat Shop & Smokehouse, Tiny But Mighty Popcorn, Almost Famous Popcorn, Great River Maple, Beaverdale Confections, Smitty Bee Honey, and Chocolate Storybook. There was no designated section and I could not find any of the brands, except Sterzing's. So I ended buying two cans of Black and Bold cold brew and a few bags of Hy-Vee potato chips, such as sour cream and cheddar, dill pickle, and Lola's secret recipe. I also bought some Belgium products that I have not seen in other stores: Zoet Belgium chocolate and Petrus Belgian ale. read more

Make sure you check the expiration dates in this store. Main complaint is there is never anyone in the hot food, salads area to help you if you want a pint or quart of something or a hot meal. I'm in this store daily and often give up waiting for someone to come out and acknowledge me. Many times, give up and leave empty handed. Terrible customer service. Surprised any of your hot food and salads get sold. At least put a silver desk call bell out there for customers to use. It's not that difficult to give better customer service. read more

I called in asking a question about pick up and the lady who answered, Kim, made me feel stupid for calling the wrong number. I called back to ask why she wasn't having a good day and why she hung up on me only to be hung up on again. My only guess is that Maybe she wasn't in an aisle because hyvee has a helpful smile in every aisle. I called a third time because I was very curious why I was being treated so poorly at Hy-Vee where there's normally a helpful smile in every aisle... This time Conner answered. I asked Connor if it was normally acceptable for HyVee employees to hang up on Hyvee customers with a question regarding something concerning HyVee. He refused to answer the question and said he needed to know more details before answering; like if his employee had been cussed out or treated badly. I assured him it's only 9 am, Far too early to be using foul language. Anyways. I didn't cuss out Kim. She jus woke up on the wrong side of the bed and needed to take a sick day. Something about customer service that always baffles me is when they don't understand that the customer is always right. If an employee is having a bad day it is not an excuse to take it out on a customer. If an employee is having a bad day they should be able to go home and rejuvenate and come back refreshed to represent the brand with upmost respect and superiority. Kim and Conner chose themselves and pride over the needs of a concerned hyvee customer. Kim and Conner did not do their job appropriately today. In my opinion these two nice people need a day off to appreciate the amazing company they work for and to do some research on how to treat a loyal customer/ former employee. Thanks for reading. I have never gotten so much bad meat and fish from any grocery chain! Check your frozen items as the freezers in this store are not set as cold as freezers normally are (Iowa people do cheap things like this all the time). The health department should look at the freezers but I am sure they will not as they are just lazy. read more

A couple of months ago I decided to embark on an over-the-counter sushi venture. This is the first of the series from the beginning of March. Starting a venture into local over-the-counter sushi... I've been thinking about trying this for a while, but to be honest I'm not sure how many places have it offered. HyVee, Whole Foods, and Trader Joes... I don't have a SAMs or Costco membership. I guess finding it will be part of the adventure. I started out with HyVee (Valley West location). Everything looked fresh. Nothing I saw in the refrigerated case screamed "I'M GOING TO POISON YOU!!!" when I was looking over the selection. wink emoticon I grabbed a 6pc (label says 4pc) shrimp tempura crunch roll. $5.49 It looked fresh...the avocado was bright green and nothing looked dried out. It came with a packet of wasabi paste (no brand on label), soy sauce (no brand on label), and ginger (Tokyo Nori Inc.). No real surprises as far as the base ingredients. I'm not sure what the red around the outside of the roll is. I'm sure it's supposed to represent tobiko, but it had more of an artificial texture/crunch to it...not roe like. The sushi tasted fresh. I have no idea when it was made... Not dried out at all. I forgot chopsticks so it was finger food today, and everything held together really well. The rice itself had a good consistency, mild tasting, a little sweet. The spicy mayo and eel sauce were good. There was no harsh taste to the nori...pretty unnoticeable. The avocado was fresh and a julienne of cucumber added some crunch. The tempura batter on the shrimp wasn't soggy...it still had some crunch left too. Something in the center tasted slightly grainy...not unpleasant...just there. I should have dissected one of the pieces, but I was hungry and I'm a one bite per piece guy. Maybe some shredded cheese used as filler in the roll? Condiments... I added a little wasabi and soy sauce to each piece. The wasabi paste had a good taste; aesthetically it was baby poop yellow...parents will know what I mean...and that was kind of hard to get past at first. The soy sauce was soy sauce...I'm not picky there...regular no low sodium. It did say naturally brewed on it. I was just going to throw away the ginger since I only had the one roll. Normally I'd use it as a palate cleanser if I had more that one roll and was bouncing back and forth between them... I decided to try it anyway just because... It had kind of a fine grind to it...tasted more "pickled" and not what I'm used to at a sushi bar. All in all. Decent. Not what I'd expect from a sushi bar, but decent for grab-and-go take out. For $5.49 v. the normal $10 I'd pay in a restaurant...I'd eat/buy it again. read more

This is my go-to 'Vee because it's so convenient to swing by after work. Also, I love the fact that it's right next to Target if I need to stop at both places for deodorant/what-have-you. This is a full service store with a Market Grill, deli, Chinese food, pizza, etc. It's always been super clean & that's so appreciated. The people stocking the shelves or even merely just walking around always ask if I need any help with anything. I like how the team members are right there to bag groceries at check out even if they haven't been ask. What can I say, I'm a Hy-Vee fanatic! read more

This is my go-to HyVee. It's close to work, Target and I-235. While some things are hard to find--hummus? cream cheese? fresh ginger? I eventually found them, but none of which were in the usual places. I usually buy my baking essentials, liquor, coffee, Nutella and anything else I can't find at Whole Foods Market. The employees are always very nice. Note: Their selection of hard alcohol has vastly improved within the last year. They have Hendrick gin, St Germain, and Makers Mark. Not all Hy-vee/Dahls offer these items. read more

This is my favorite Hy-Vee. I can find everything quickly, and they have obvious endcaps for seasonal items. I like the health food discounts I've gotten on Wednesdays, and employees are generally very helpful. These managers kick butt. read more

The grocery store parts are awesome. The kitchen sucks. First it is staffed by a team of older Eastern European women that literally hate life and have the worst customer service skills ever. Don't ever buy the fried chicken, especially for catered dinner because you'll get lots of uncooked pieces. They are trying to do comfort foods. Ugh. Tough as leather beef brisket served with some macaroni and cheese they made last week and heat up and keep warm all day. Mashed potatoes with crust? They have all kinds of meat made a long time ago and sitting under a heat lamp. Just no pride behind that counter. They would be better off not even bothering and being just a grocery store. Post-renovations, this is a nice Hyvee. It puts a lot of other locations to shame in terms of its aesthetic (including my old go-to ) and its scope. There is a solid variety of just about everything and it is easy to figure out where it is at. Very generally, as far as grocery stores go, this is a good one. read more

This Hy-Vee is my go-to grocery store partly because it's proximity to me but mostly because of the great service and selection. The Chinese food here is really good especially considering it's a grocery store. The pizza is also great (when they have samples I grab one while shopping). But I've never had the fried chicken or any of their other American selection other than their broccoli supreme salad (btw it was pretty good). This place is well organized so everything is easy to find, but if you can't find something the staff is friendly and will help you find it(there really is a helpful smile in every aisle). I've been to other Hy-Vee stores but this one has better organization. I've been here many times so they call me by name, always a nice touch. Overall this is my go-to grocery store and favorite Hy-Vee because of the friendly staff, great food, and big selection. read more

I don't get it, every time i go to this Hy vee, it is always something! went there last week, during the first snow storm, and we had the WORST Cashier! took a half hour to buy 10 items! come on folks! i believe in EEOC., but give me a break! train the guy at your leisure not mine! awful experience. before that, i got a hair in my Chinese food! YUCK! then the last time i was there, of course..... they had a very limited supply of fried chicken... and i am a fried chicken freak! they always just have breasts! dry, dry, dry, ! thank god, there is another store just across the street! read more
