Well, just bought some $1.99 a pound chicken wings. Package states 5.01 pounds. Awesome. Get home and I start weighting and packaging the wings into one pound bags. I only have 4.25 pounds of chicken. When I weighted the yellow tray and that soggy cloth that captures moisture under the meat I get, you guessed it, 5.01 pounds. The people who work at Hy-Vee are generally very helpful. The only complaint is the pharmacy drive-thru gets extremely congested. I almost saw a fight there the other day when an unsuspecting senior pulled in the line and it was ahead of the man who had been waiting for quite awhile..he started honking then it got more aggressive until he got out of his car and started to yell at the person... it really was a scary situation... the drive-thru does need to be reconfigured as it generally has a long line. The store usually have what you need but I recommend making sure to watch when items are on sale that they ring up properly because sometimes that doesn't happen. read more

I drive a pretty far way to go to this HyVee because of the quality and variety of food that they have it's also convenient right off of the freeway. Their charcuterie is the best of all the Hy-Vee's I've been to I go there specifically to get some of their San Francisco pork and they keep rotating some high-end ham set a really good and actually taste like ham. They have their own bakery they have a small market grille restaurant they have their own hot food line of Chinese Pizza BBQ and other classic foods. They have a nice fish and meat department. They have extensive frozen foods and lots of specialized food whether it's uncured bacon or free range eggs or specialized organic food there are plenty of choices there. They have an attached liquor store that has a variety of beers and hard liquors and wine. They also have a nice floral shop. I think it's my favorite HyVee. read more

This is a review for the Market Grille restaurant, not the actual grocery store. Not sure why they changed it to the grocery store :( I was lured in by their marketing a free piece of Cheesecake Factory cheesecake with a burger purchase. Good thing I wanted both. We went on a Friday evening and I was surprised by a couple things: live guitar/soloist in the bar and how busy they were (majority of tables were full). Having never been to dinner at a Market Grill, I had no clue what to expect. I had been for lunch at another location three years ago and that place was dead. We were seated right away and started exploring the menus. Our daughter was given a kid's menu with crayons that kept her busy for a bit. We didn't see drink options anywhere and had to ask our server. She handed us a paper copy from her notepad and made the comment she needed it back because she may not get another one. This seemed odd, no drink menu on our table nor one to "keep." She went through the special discounts for Friday night but not what the special foods were for the month. I opted for the Mushroom, Swiss, and Onion burger (the special burger for the month) with broccoli. I later ordered my free piece of white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. My husband ordered the Steak & Ale Shepard's Pie with a side of Chicken & Wild Rice soup. Our daughter had the Mac & Cheese, applesauce, dirt Dessert, and white milk. Little did we know our meals came with some delicious rolls. They were warm and topped with a honey or honey like glaze. My burger was wonderful! Moist, lots of cheese, mushrooms and onions had great flavor, and the bun was delicious. It was a good sized burger too. The broccoli was yummy too and done just right. You can never go wrong with cheesecake! My husband liked his shepherd's pie but wasn't a huge fan of the strong ale taste it had. His soup was yummy. Our daughter enjoyed her meal. My only true complaint was our server wasn't that great. No straws at first and then had to go get some for us. Took a while for my iced tea to be refilled. Anytime she was bringing something to our table, she missed us and had to turn around and come back. Plus the lack of special foods being outlined at first. HyVee has self checkout but they were to cheap to buy the scan guns that 90% of all grocery stores that have self checkout use. They expect customers to flip over cases of cola to try and scan a bar code and the funny thing is they say theft is up and I guarantee this is because people simply could not scan the items efficiently. There is a reason Walmart, Kroger and others use price scan guns but once again HyVee is behind everyone else. read more

Location: Oskaloosa, IA Hy Vee Reason for Complaint: tried the Hy Vee dinners and everything sucked. The green beans were dry and tasteless and weren't cooked. I found a piece of stem I almost choked on. My mom tried the meatloaf. That was overcooked and very dry. The meatloaf had no taste and lacked seasonings and flavor. The mac and cheese was also tasteless. It was too chewey and undercooked no seasonings also flat. The kitchen manager complained and yelled at the employee in front the customers. She was no respect and no manners for anyone. To the whole store, it was quantity over quality. That is why the employees don't stay at Hy Vee. The cashiers are robots. They do not say hi how are you at all and make it friendly. They pass your groceries by and how much and then get the heck out of there. Helpful smile in every aisle my ass. I suggest the skillets for breakfast, a tomato/mozzarella/basil flatbread for lunch and a surprisingly delicious burger for dinner. Went in at 9 PM to grab something for my work pot luck the next day. I did not want to stop at 9 PM, but well, since I didn't plan ahead, there I was. I went in and got some crustinis and some BLT dip from the deli area. The dips are pretty pricey, but thy are always so yummy. I usually can't resist them. Perfect for a Superbowl pot luck at work. You may spend a little more on some things, but if you get the fuel saver items and sale items it makes up for it in the end. They are cleaner, more helpful, and more friendly. Had my first experience at the Hy-Vee Market Grille on 51st. The inside looks great and you would never know that you were in a grocery store. However the service was very lacking. I ordered a blueberry mule and it tasted great, only problem is after my first one it sat empty for over 10 minutes. I waited 35 minutes for two orders of sushi. Once the sushi was brought to me, I then waited another 5-7 minutes to obtain chopsticks and soy sauce. I could understand if the place had lines of people waiting, but not that many people inside for those type of waits. read more

This store is big, offers gluten free and organic food, and carries Trappey's canned goods! They also have falling prices so things are extremely affordable here. I wish we had one of these in Chicago! They offer both self checkout and cashier check out. Service was fast and friendly. They also offer antibacterial wipes to wipe down the carts/baskets. At the front of the store where the carts are, you can pick up a paperbag filled with food and pay a $10 donation to someone who needs food this holiday season. read more

Just off the east side of I35. They had a great selection of fruits and veggies to pick up on our road trip. A small but good selection of artisan cheese and meats as well. Check out the la Quercia brand of prosciutto as it's made in Iowa by a family that went to Italy for training before starting their own company in the Midwest. We hit the bulk section for some nuts. And, Wallah! Instant picnic fare. Off to one of Iowa's lovely rest stops down the road. Side note: La Quercia's appreciation for cured meats grew out of the three and a half years they lived in Parma, Italy, prosciutto's area of origin, where they saw how the careful treatment of fine materials resulted in an accessible, sublime and entirely regional cuisine. The store is clean and well-organized. I'm a shopping moron so I always have to ask where something is located. This is probably one of the most complete grocery stores in the area. The liquor selection is outstanding as they definitely have something for everyone, even larger than some standalone liquor stores. I am from Chicago, and frankly some of the items in this store are priced quite high (almost laughable). Needed to mail a package at the service counter. A more appropriate name is DIS - service counter. One person taking care of several customers in line and one develops a problem. That only person has to stop everything and make the rest of us stand around waiting for them to solve the first customers problem. Okay, they have an issue that's in need of attention. The store is busy so where are the others that could provide customer service. There are none because HyVee apparently doesn't care to provide good customer service. Market Grill in HyVee stores has one of the best deals if you're into craft beer. 1/2 off apps and taps between 4-6 pm daily, and you're enjoying beers like Exile Ruthie, or Left hand brewery's milk stout. The selections vary store to store and they change quite often. It's best to belly up to see the current selection as opposed to what's on the menu. Friday's HH adventure cost me only $8.50 for 3 craft beers. What a steal! Too bad the service was SLOW! Even the manager on duty could've used a bit of customer service training. My guest and I had to ask for our bill a few times and had to wait even longer to pay. Had no idea what was going on in the service department but we had a front row seat to witnessing a level of service that was slower than watching paint dry. Visiting from Southern California and was looking forward to a good Hy-vee breakfast. It was awful from the beginning. We ordered at the hostess stand? When asked if had any breakfast specials we were given a gruff no by the manager taking our order. We then proceeded to the outside tables to sit and wait and wait and wait for basic breakfast fare. I went to check on our order after 20 minutes and were just told sorry we are busy and dismissed. After another 10-15 minutes went to see where our food was. After some checking discovers our order had been lost. Not one employee approached our table as we were sitting there. They brought us our food. I had French toast and eggs good as i remember. My dad has over easy eggs, hash browns, sausage and toast. All were cold. Needless to say not the HyVee experience i remember from my youth. read more

Best grocery store chain in the world. Been shopping here for decades, and will continue. They are active in the community, one if the biggest employers in the state, and the customer service is the best in the industry. If you want the best value, shop the ad. They are always available at costumer service, but also usually on racks by the door. They cycle so common items are on sale very few weeks. It's very easy to stick up and time your shopping for certain things so you can always buy them on sale. Easily cheaper than Wal Mart, and you don't have to put up with a filthy store with terrible service and inadequate staff. Hyvee staff will bend over backwards to get whatever you need. Best Hyvee in West Des Moines. This store is the nicest, and the layout makes more sense than other Hy-Vee stores in WDM. This store makes it easy to find what you need and has a great selection. Have gone to this store for years. Staff are always friendly. You get what you expect for in a Hy-Vee. I've never heard anyone I know of complain about this store. They have a StarBucks in there, floral and acceptable health food section. I have gotten more than one picture-on-icing ice-cream cakes and their bakery manager, Mickey was extremely helpful both times as were the staff when I picked it up. All departments just seem like a well run operation. Oh, and they have dry-ice in a cooler in the far back NorthEast corner - useful if making a lot road trip with food or just want to drop it in the sink at home for some cool fog special effects for the kids :) read more

I have frequented this hy vee often. They have a Chinese food stand that is convenient. It's not great Chinese but it's fairly cheap and definitely quick. They have a nice bakery section that often has samples. You can tell the employees absolutely don't want to be there. If you're looking for good customer service it won't happen. It's a grocery store in every sense. No bells and whistles. This location is putting in a market grill. They need to focus on other things for sure before venturing out to adding a restaraunt. Why do you need a restaraunt when you're surrounded by actual restaurants? I'll go there because they are open 24 hours which is very nice. In the end though, if you're looking for better go to Whole Foods, if you're looking for cheaper go to Aldi. read more
