This is a real Korean restaurant in the Netherlands. As I am a Korea born and raised, I can recommend all the foods are real taste of Korea.

There used to be an ambiguous Chinese restaurant situated at this location. Well, it wasn't really…read morethat dotchy. But this is Zuid and in Zuid people have money to spend and they don't want to spend it on stuffy Dutch Chinese fair. Babi pangang and Foe yong hai might have sufficed for grandpa & grandma and mom & dad, but the new generation wants modern and hip. They want small little nibbits and lots, cause sharing is caring. They want flavors that remind them of the flavors they experienced during their far east holidays. In Zuid, Asian fusion is the way to go. Thus about 2 weeks ago, a new Asian fusion restaurant opened it's doors in de Maasstraat. Not that there's any shortage of Asian inspired restaurants in the Rivierenbuurt, with Kaiko, Sapporo, Korean Garden, Hakata Senpachi and Orbit to name a few, only a stones throw away. I pass the restaurant regularly on my way to the appie for my grocery rants. The enticive menu lured me in this evening. By the way, their menu is a little more extensive then the one posted online. Let's see, the spider roll with soft shell crab, avocado, Japanese mayo and tobiko. Fried spicy dynamite roll with tuna and kimchi? Oyster cutlet roll with crispy oyster, red onion, almonds and tonkatsy mayo...hmmmm, interesting. Yaikes, €9 for 4 pieces?! Right..... let's just leave the creative sushi rolls for now and move on to the meals, shall we. Scallops with garlic topping, soft shell crab with garlic and red pepper, Malaysian curry sirloin with vegetables, steamed turbot with spring onions, ginger and doused with hot soy oil. Yahaa! The meals are on the small side here, so I was advised to go for 3 dishes per person. After viewing the prices, I only went for two dishes though. This prompted the question, only 2? You're not that hungry then?! Which lead me to respond with a hesitant yes. What I meant to say however was: Actually, I am very hungry but this is all I can afford right now. For a shared dinning concept, meals aren't economical to say the least (average pricesof ~ €8-13 per dish). I ended up going for the beef skewers with Malaysian peanut sauce and the Tuna Tataki with ponzu dip. Although beef skewers reminded me more of the Indonesian style sate rather than Malaysian with the sweet ketjap, they tasted okay. The seared tuna was also fine. I was expecting a fresh citrusy sauce as depicted in the picture on their site and was kind of disappointed when I couldn't detect any citrus flavors in the ponzu dip. What is that saying like? Never expect anything from anyone, because expectation always hurts. On the other hand, I was happy to discover only 2 dishes were sufficient to satisfy my hunger. So when on a budget my advise would be, go for protein! No, rephrase, ALWAYS go for protein, even when not broke. Even though the dishes didn't quite live up to my expectations, I think I will pay Michiu another visit. The food was good enough for me to still want to try other dishes on the menu, like turbot and the quail with goose liver. Yes, this place fits right in the neighbourhood with a high demand for contemporary fusion cuisine. Asian red is definitely the theme here. There is few seating outside as well. Prices are rather steep, but no more so then at Sapporo and Kaiko. Remember, this is Zuid and in Zuid people have money to spend. This newbie might do quite well....

Not typical Amsterdam cuisine but that doesn't keep it from being tasty. The long and short of it: 1. Food: Happyhappyjoyjoy offers a pretty wide variety of Asian food ranging from Dim Sum to Pho and everything in between. They also have plenty of vegetarian selections, so we opted for the Dim Sum route with lots of smaller plates. The Chi Pao Buns really stood out along with the Who Tip Xia, but it was all good. I'd say an entree each and a split small plate would be good for 2 if you're mildly hungry. 2. Drinks: Happyhappyjoyjoy offers a full bar with some beers that may be brewed in house? Unsure of that but theres a pretty good selection. They also offer Asian sodas, cocktails, wine and sake, so you have your pick on how you're going to booze up. 3. Atmosphere: Loud and dim with the faint glow of neon lights. I personally found it fun, but if you're looking for a quiet meal to have a soft conversation over... this probably isn't the place. 4. Price: Happyhappyjoyjoy runs a bit on the expensive side, 8ish Euro for a small plate and 11ish for an entree. Tack on a few 5 Euro beers or 10 Euro cocktail and the bill really starts to add up. Worth it for the food you get but not an every day affair. 5. Service: The service really stood out here. The place was absolutely packed but that didn't seem to matter to our server who always seemed to appear right when we needed him, which was often given our small plates approach. We resisted eating too much Asian fair while in Amsterdam, but I'm glad we stopped in here. I'd like to explore more of the cuisine that Amsterdam has to offer, but I'd be far from disappointed if we ended up back here on our next trip. Overall Grade: B+

We decided to play a bit of roulette for dinner and asked the staff to help make selections for us based on what they felt was a "must-have." Needless to say - she knew her stuff. The food was blend of creative beauty and amazing taste sized for folks to try a few different things. I don't remember that menu names for everything, but I do know that I'd have no shame on my next visit by pulling up this review to show my pics and ask for the same stuff again. We literally enjoyed every single thing we had. The place is impressive. As you walk up, you'll stumble upon their repetitive Michelin cards displayed at the front window. Based on the taste and experience, they were well earned. Surprisingly, the tab at the end of the meal was not expensive -- I thought the value was worth it. The place has a trendy feel to it. If you decide to check it out, your best bet is to make a reservation. It seemed to fill up with people before we finished. I'm in Amsterdam regularly for work - this place earned a spot in my "must stop by" list each time I visit Amsterdam.

I do find it exciting that they are trying innovative flavors, but I also think its important to not overshadow some of the foundations in the process. (Tuna Nigiri: C) - Smells extremely delightful, but unfortunately dullfully lacking saline that could only be partially resolved by soy sauce. (Salmon Nigiri: C) - Fascinating concept with a South Asian influenced flavor profile that seemingly works. I'm not sure what the foam is supposed to be for since its completely disjoint from the salmon, but this dish wouldve worked if it was balanced with saline. (XO Siu Mai: B) - Surprisingly well flavored with a tender meat mixture, topped with some subtle xo to enhance with a noticeable but not overpowering spiciness. (Steamed Scallop: A) - This is the least fusion dish but also unironically the best from what I've sampled. A very classic profile with tender scallops, and an abundance of vermicelli and garlic that is perfectly seasoned with soy and sesame. We went based off the website boasting high end small dishes. We were anticipating thoughtfully prepared Asian fusion cuisine in an elegant setting. We ordered the tasting menu. None of the dishes were inspired. The menu started with an oyster in the half shell with a nice Asian version of a mignonette. The mignonette was excellent but the oyster itself was a little fishy. The sashimi that followed was good but identical to sashimi anyone can get in any decent sushi restaurant. The black cod followed. Like the sashimi, it was good but nothing special. The last main was seared wagyu. It was nicely cooked but the sauce was a completely uninspired sweet sauce that actually detracted from the taste of the meat. The tulip pot dessert was hands down the high point. It was the one part of the menu that felt in any way inspired. The service was friendly but very slow and very disjointed. The music was too loud to allow a meaningful conversation. The dining room is thoughtfully designed and actually quite cool. So, if you're looking for a club that serves mediocre uninspired Asian fusion cuisine, by all means go for it. If you're looking for a nice restaurant with thoughtful Asian fusion dishes, you might want to look elsewhere.
