Now for the rest of the story: The fact that the oral surgeon was able to get an IV in my arm that most people can't speaks volumes to his skill. I didn't have any pain after my extraction and didn't take any meds, though it was a relatively "simple" extraction as far as extractions go. The hardest part post‑op was limiting myself to soft foods for a week! I've only been to the office twice -- the consult and the actual procedure. The consult didn't leave me with the best first impression. My anxiety was through the roof and, other than the fantastic lady at the front desk, the visit didn't do much to calm it. I also later found out I could have filled out the paperwork online beforehand; I didn't bring my glasses and really struggled to read the forms in the office. For some people, including myself, the dental environment is inherently anxiety‑provoking. The power imbalance, the lack of control, the vulnerability... None of that is easily eased when you're lying on an uncomfortable dental chair in a cold, quiet room with only your thoughts (and an IV sedation handout) for company. I would have appreciated being clearly presented with all sedation options instead of IV being assumed. Anxiety aside, all went well. I also appreciated the fun bandaid and the thoughtful take‑home bag.

The receptionists have always been very nice, as well. Unfortunately, I have not had the same experiences with Dr. Rowley. I had some dental issues that required me to get a bridge over three teeth. A different dentist (no longer there) installed it. For 2-3 years afterward, I complained of sensitivity in the area each time I went in, and was told that was normal and it would go away. Finally got an X-ray and it showed that the dentist had incorrectly placed the bridge, leaving a gap exposing nerves. Now, I am thankful that Dr. Rowley didn't charge me to replace it--however, the issue could have been resolved years prior if I had been taken seriously! When I went in to have the bridge replaced, I was not numb enough. The pain was awful and when I asked for more anesthetic, I was given so much that my tongue, mouth, and entire lower half of my face was numb for two days. After covid, I returned to have a cavity filled, and brought this up--I was told I'd be fine, but they'd numb me extra if it'd make me feel better. Cool. Again, I was numb for about a day and a half, which was way longer than necessary. Sorry I didn't want dental pain, I guess? Anyway, Dr. Rowley dropped me as a patient because she was overcharging my father for cleanings, and he dared to bring it up! So I got dropped, even though I was twenty-eight years old and on my own insurance plan. Guess she did me a favor, even though Bayside is the only dentist in Anacortes that takes my insurance. But I'd rather pay out of pocket or make the trip out of town than be treated like that ever again.

The relaxed happy ambience throughout the office reflects Dr. Rowleys' well honed leadership skills. A well cared for and happy staff is obvious in the high level of kindness in patient care. Each aspect of my appointment, from scheduling as a new patient through treatments (Dental Exam, X-Rays, Hygiene and a filling) was clearly discussed. I had a 45 year career working in many areas of health care including dentistry, this dental office is STELLAR. Thank you for a wonderful dental care experience!
