I've been wanting to stop in this place in the old village of Brunswick for some time. Yelp…read morereports this as closed, but it's open and the hours on this page are accurate. I finally made it here last night. Brunswick is an old German settlement that was founded in the mid 1800's. It's about two miles west of Cedar Lake/US 41, along 133rd/135th Avenue. The tavern sits at the southeast corner of 135th and Calumet Avenue. You can tell that the building is very old, but kept in very nice condition. We arrived around 6:30 PM, came in through the back door and settled up to the old bar. The owners were watching TV at the bar, waiting to serve those who came in. The menu is very simple: a good selection of domestic bottles (Miller, Bud, Coors, etc.) and a few imports (Grolsch, Warsteiner). The owners were very nice and we talked about the history of the tavern and Brunswick. According to the owner, this has been a continually-operated tavern since 1856, when it served as a stop for stagecoach travel. The tavern was very clean and had a lot of neat, old swag including a vintage Old Style light fixture. Beers were reasonably priced. It doesn't appear they serve anything but bottled/canned beer and lemonade, but definitely worth the stop for a cold beer. I'll be back next time I'm in the area!

This was my second time coming to this restaurant, and it was definitely an improvement over my…read morefirst visit when I wasn't really impressed by the food. The service has been a bit of a mixed bag both times. While the staff is friendly, the check ins themselves are okay. This time around, the food was much better. I really enjoyed the burger I ordered, and our appetizer was great too. They also have a fantastic outdoor patio that is easily one of the best parts of the experience. My main hesitation is the price point. It feels pretty pricey for what is essentially bar and grill food. Our bill came out to over $100 for just one appetizer, two beers, one kids' meal, and two sandwiches. For that price, I'm not entirely sure it's worth it for me to come back for a full dinner a third time. That said, I would absolutely come back just to hang out on the patio for an appetizer and a beer, or hit it up if I'm using the water equipment rental next door!

I honestly don't even know where to start with this experience at Bugaboo's…read more The food came out wrong the first time, and when it was brought back out, there was hair in my food AGAIN. Not just a tiny strand either -- I found multiple hairs in my food. I've attached a picture because I couldn't believe what I was looking at. At that point, I was completely disgusted and had absolutely no desire to keep eating. When you go out to eat, especially somewhere that isn't exactly cheap, the LAST thing you expect is to find someone's hair in your food. Having it happen twice is beyond unacceptable. It completely ruined the meal and honestly made me question the cleanliness of the entire kitchen. The drinks were okay, the service was okay, but nothing about the experience was what I would consider top-notch. The prices were way too high for what we received, and there are plenty of other places where you can get better food, better prices, and much better overall service. And to be clear, this is not directed at the bartender or waitress personally. They were doing their jobs, and I have no disrespect toward them. My issue is with the overall experience, the food, the quality control, and the fact that I paid good money for a meal that I ultimately couldn't stomach because I was so disgusted. Finding hair in your food is gross enough once. Finding it again after the food was corrected is absolutely disgusting and something a restaurant should never let happen. Unfortunately, this was a huge disappointment, and I definitely won't be rushing back. There are better options out there that are cleaner, more reasonably priced, and provide a much better dining experience.

I left a review very recently regarding my experience dining outside that was amazing. I'm sad to…read moresay that when I came back about a month later with a reservation to dine inside, it wasn't the same. We checked in with the many hostesses when we walked in. No one greeted us. I finally said my name & party of 4. She said ok. I had to ask what next... are you texting me, calling my name. Do I follow you? It was awkward. She said we will say your name. We waited about 10-15 minutes. There were 5 girls yelling out people's names like the cheesey family restaurants. It felt tacky. If they were nice or said it in a friendly tone it would help. My friends were taken aback each time they yelled. Not to be petty, but it set the tone of the evening. We were sat in the sunroom area of the restaurant. Old tables & chairs. Our table had 5 chairs. Made for an awkward dining experience. No decor in that room. During the day, there would be a lake view. The rest of the place & bar area is beautiful though. The server was attentive. Explained the menu with a heavy sell on the expensive food items. Felt forced. My friends got appetizers that were good. Calamari was good. My lobster bisque was salty, but good. Our drinks were good also. My chicken salad with dried peaches was delicious. I didn't care for the sweet dressing. I prefer a tossed salad with a lighter dressing typically. My friend's Cobb salad was not good. It was big, but wet. Water was on the bottom of the plate. There was so much egg and lots of blue cheese dressing. My friend liked his steak very much. Everything else was ok. One odd thing was that the people bussing the table were there a lot. Asking to take the appetizers before they were even half gone. We felt rushed. Coming up & asking us questions mumbled. If we said sorry I didn't hear, we'd get never mind dude. Another server mumbled to us & when we asked what. She was annoyed & said never mind. Marched away. It was such an odd experience. A very nice thing, they brought my friend a birthday dessert. I debated leaving this review, but I know that the owners read these. I really appreciate that they care. My friends said they weren't sure if they'd come back. I assured them I had an amazing experience last time.
