While in South Bend, we were looking for some cheap food and pizza sounded really good. My husband has never been to Hungry Howie's, so we went there. I was surprised how good the pizza was considering it was less than $20 for small and large pizza. If we lived close, this would definitely be my go to over Little Caesars. They have all the toppings you would expect at the average pizza joint. I do love that they have flavored crust options. My husband and I both got the herb crust and it was delicious. I never thought I'd give 5 stars to a $6 pizza but Hungry Howie's exceeded my expectations when it came to cheap pizza. It took a whole hour to get home from the restaurant, and the food was still warm. The grease hasn't solidified yet, which a lot of other pizzas I've bought would within an hour on the road. We took slices right out of the box and they never needed reheating. I would 100% come back again.

I can't remember ever going to a Hungry Howie's Pizza, yet I felt compelled to visit. I often go pass this location to get to the speedway gas station or one of the many other options for food in the southbend area. I'm also not much of a pizza fan unless it's authentic with ingredients that won't bother my stomach. With that said I found this pizza to be about average, but better then most other chains. The price is more than reasonable for what you get, the flavors are there, but so is the oil at a fraction of the amount the other chains have. The wait to get a pizza is also reasonable if you call ahead. I can't say ordering online is your best bet, only because during my first attempts, I was given an error message. Once I called there was a delightful message service announcement that explain specials and pricing with a disclosure that some areas are a dollar more. All in all if I was to recommend a cheaper pizza location then I would recommend this one. Although my pizza sauce was cold which isn't nearly as tasty as warm sauce on warm breadsticks.

Best part about Hungry Bowie's Pizza is the flavored crust. Overall, however, pizza is mediocre (at best).

The food tasted homemade in the best way and the onion rings and jojos were also great. The owner was one of the nicest people we've met in a long time. You can tell he genuinely cares about the place and the people who walk through the door. The restaurant has so much character and nostalgia to it. Between the vintage milkshake machine and the old-school neighborhood feel, it's the kind of local spot that's becoming harder to find. It's also only a few minutes from the airport, making it an easy stop if you're passing through South Bend. We'll definitely be back next time we're in town.

Five stars. The service? Far and beyond. Jerry was the very best... making recommendations, sharing more on the history of the establishment (including a historic ice cream machine), and cooking a delicious meal. The place is cute and unassuming- it almost felt like sitting in someone's living room which further added to its charm. Jerry shared that they decorate for every holiday too which must be fun! We would certainly return to try the sandwiches and milkshakes the next time we are in South Bend! :)

August 13, 2026 So glad my wife and I chose this local place…read moreto eat dinner in South Bend. It was very good food prepared fresh. The server was personable and very helpful. We got there around 5:00 PM while things were just getting busy. It had a nice vibe to it. You could tell people enjoy coming here. I started off the order with an item off their monthly menu specials. The muffuletta pizza. Very nice with a great flavor. My wife loved every bite of her braised beef sliders and cole slaw. We also have this obsession with ordering Brussels sprouts when we go out and they're available. I will give the sprouts 3 out of 5 because they had way too much balsamic vinegar on them. This rating doesn't bring my overall rating down because it's likely they are very good any other time. As if all that weren't enough to eat, we ordered the 8" Cinnamon Streusel pizza with vanilla bean ice cream off their seasonal monthly menu. Oh boy was that good!! If given the opportunity to come back to South Bend, this will be my go to place. PS... I'm not a beer drinker, but it seems they have lots of craft beer on tap. It's considered a gastropub. There's plenty of seating inside and outside. Some outside seating is covered and nice of it raining but still warm out. There is a patio area that's quite large. It looks like and has a feel of a biergarten.

I had not been back to The Lauber in a while when visiting South Bend, so I went twice this time!…read moreOn Friday, my friend and I stopped in for a happy hour drink as I remember they made a fantastic Expresso Martini, complete with three coffee beans floating on top! It was just as good as the last time I was here. On Saturday, I ordered takeout for us since I was staying in the downtown area. I ordered the Power Salad (full order to share), and it was a nice mixture of arugula, spinach, quinoa, dried blueberries, toasted almonds, goat cheese, grape tomatoes and red onion, with green goddess dressing on the side. It was a plentiful salad and very tasty. I would definitely order this salad again! For dinner, I had the Rigatoni Chicken Pasta, which was advertised as their house specialty. The rigatoni noodles were accompanied with seasoned chicken and a nicely spiced mushroom cream sauce, which was divine. I wish there was more chicken (at least in my dish) as it was minimal at best. My friend ordered the Tropic Burger, medium well, with beer battered fries. The burger was topped with pulled pork and bacon with a tasty jalapeno sauce she just loved. The burger was so big she even had half of it for the next day. Overall, another great experience at The Lauber. Looking forward to my next visit when I get to South Bend.
