The name the place attracted us and it's right off of I-80 and sits along the Mississippi River. The chicken noodle soup is mediocre. The potato salad could use some eggs, onion and cheese. The waffle fries could have been cooked a bit longer and added some seasoning. Hubs had a sirloin sandwich with onions and said it was very good. He got his grilled sandwich and I had to wait for my cold sandwich and cheddar fries, which were waffle fries with dipping "cheese". It was more like nacho cheese and I was not a fan. I wanted to stop and get a bite to eat on the way back to Des Moines a little while ago. The location was great, take a look at the view in the picture! It's located right next to the Mississippi. Thei is a very basic sandwich place. Sandwich was made in 15 seconds and the "hot" sandwiches are heated up in the microwave. The draw is obviously the location. Probably wouldn't eat here again. read more

I got snowed it at a nearby hotel and decided to step over to this sandwich shop next door. The walk was less than 3 minutes. Once inside, the shop looked and smelled clean. Quintin and the girls on the line who took my order had a polite demeanor and my simple veggie but huge sandwich was delicious and fast to make. The bread fresh. Delicious potato salad and refillable fountain drink. The customers after me got a sample of soup they were trying out before having to purchase it as a whole. I'd say that's great customer service. Service was quick and the menu had tasty options from deli sandwiches to loaded baked potatoes. Side options are chips,cakes,huge cookies,soups,cheese curds and waffle fries. I enjoyed my Philly Cheesesteak sandwich while the rest of my family had a Turkey/Ham sandwich and a Ham/Salami Sandwich. The sandwiches were fresh and the bread was soft and pillowy. I stopped here on my way out of town for a funeral. I've eaten here quite a few times but this was one of my worst experiences. I ordered a King 11 on whole wheat, everything, no peppers, no tomatoes. I got in my car, opened the sandwich to find lettuce spilling everywhere, loaded with tomatoes and peppers, my car became a mess because of it. There was plenty of parking and the view of the Mississippi was awesome! But like I said, a very poor experience. read more

I went here because it was a chain I never heard of since I have only lived on the East and West coast and traveling through the Mid-west I thought I would check it out. Think of this like a sandwich shop that uses better tasting ingredients than Subway but isn't as good as a Fire House Subs or other popular trendy submarine sandwich shops. This is more like a Subway/Arby's upgrade that is mediocre at best. Wife and I stopped by and the parking lot was huge and I didn't realize it until we left, but really empty. As we entered, the place was a ghost town. I did not really care since I was starving the wife and I ordered. I got the king size Roast Beef and cheddar with waffle fries, double meat on the sandwich. The wife ordered a loaded back potato. The damage for the meal wasn't bad but I figured for the cost the sandwich would be pretty good... The sandwich was huge but underwhelming on taste. There was a lot of roast beef and cheese but with no sauce or anything, I was wishing I went to Arby's instead for a Beef and Cheddar. The fries were good but I wouldn't really call them better than Arby's curly fries. Since I paid twice as much as I would as Arby's, I was left a little underwhelmed. The wife's potato was good but I have seen better potatoes from Wendy's... Two stars for the food and an extra bump to three stars because of the location and cool view of the great river. Bottom line: this is the best, sort of healthy, alternative to the McDonald's on this exit. It's an average sandwich shop with no stand outs that would make me a regular if I lived nearby. Traditional cold cuts and cheeses are served on soft hoagie style bread and topped with that shredded lettuce that comes in a bag, not great tomatoes, and your choice of mayo or oil and vinegar. They offer no pickles, no sprouts, no cucumbers, no peppers, no giardinara, no avocado, and no spinach. Pretty boring, to say the least. Soups are not homemade and the chips are not local or unique. Desserts looked good, but I don't have a sweet tooth. I will be back when I'm driving through and I just need eat something that won't kill me. read more

Big fan of Hungry Hobo from Galesburg. Was pleasantly surprised to find this location on our route for a road trip West. Good news is that the food is pretty darn good and a good value. Nothing gourmet, but better than larger chains'. Location is in an odd strip of offices, but has a sweet view of the river. Service was okay, but got great. May be a small thing, but it's lame that they only have a diaper changing table in the women's restroom. I was traveling with my kids and needed to change a diaper. I can say with complete confidence that this was the worst Hungry Hobo I have ever visited. When we walked up to place our order, we were half heartedly greeted by an Ewok wearing glasses. We had to dig down in the pile of trays to find one that was clean and when we informed Ewok boy of this he just said sorry but made no effort to remove the dirty trays. The staff was extremely disorganized and showed little interest in the customers or their jobs. When we finally received our food and went to sit down, we found that the tables were just as filthy as the trays. I would recommend that you find somewhere else to eat. read more

I don't understand what all the hype in the Quad Cities is about Hungry Hobo. The sandwich I had (turkey, provolone on white) was good, fine, nothing special. The bread is good, not great, the meat is good, not great. The sandwich is enjoyable, the ambiance is fast casual/counter service, the quality of the ingredients is average. Hungry Hobo is a good choice if you're in a hurry and want a lighter healthier lunch that won't weigh you down like greasy fast food but outside of convenience and price there is nothing that stands out at this place. read more

For a slow night the staff should have considered taking time to wipe down the tables instead of standing around chatting. The staff was Not very helpful, rude, and should try a smile. read more

We travel 1100+ miles for a King 9 and cheddar fries. My husband, originally from New England (also where we live now), said he would move to the QC, just for the Roast Beef Sandwiches. The LeClaire location is newish, I'm not sure when it was opened, because we are just back visiting for the holidays. We had a great experience here. It's easy off and back onto I-80. We ate in the car with a nice view of the river. Service was friendly, and the roast beef and cheddar on a soft french roll was great. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the waffle fries needed salt. Well, we decided to give this sandwich joint a try after hearing great things about it. This location was really struggling today. I ordered 2 sandwiches and fries and waited 25 minutes to walk out with my order. When I saw fries going out to those who ordered after I did sitting in the lobby, I asked about my order and was told they were only waiting on fries to which I replied well those in the lobby that went out to people who ordered after me might be the problem. All the kids in the restaurant could say was "so sorry". There was another woman with a large order who had ordered before I even walked in who was still waiting for her food when I actually left. They had lost her ticket completely. Part of the problem is that these restaurants are ran by kids without any true management to keep them accountable. I understand kids working, I was once a kid but it shouldn't be a full staff of kids who get easily overwhelmed and flustered when it gets busy! The food was OK but given the poor service it made the whole experience unimpressive. Would maybe give another location in the QC a try only because I've heard such great things but won't go back to the location here in Le Claire. read more

Meh. Pretty much like Subway. There were hot and cold sandwiches, only 3 kinds of bread. They had several soups and had baked potatoes. We had a large family group--9 people. So it worked fine because there were several booths and also bar seats facing the river which the kids enjoyed. I'm not sure if we missed something about what to eat there that the locals know....I saw other patrons with waffle fries but I didn't even clue into that from the menu--we just grabbed chips. I even asked what their specialty was, and got the halfhearted reply of the Hobo Combination (?) which was basically an Italian sub. Pretty good but not amazing and I didn't want mayo but got it anyway. My daughter ordered nachos and nearly cried when she saw it: a pile of Doritos with a plastic cup of cheese. I took it back and told them it wasn't what we were expecting. They refunded my money and we got her a sandwich instead, which she enjoyed. I really appreciated that. My mother in law got the Rueben but was disappointed because even though it was a hot sandwich, it was not grilled as you might expect, and really only the filling was hot-- the bread was cold. The beef vegetable soup was very tasty. Baked potatoes were nothing special. This place was recommended to us by someone at Antique Archaeology which was the reason we were in LeClaire, so we thought it might be a cool local place, but it wasn't super exciting.
