Nice place. We were in town for soccer and we were the only ones in the restaurant at around 5:30. Waitstaff was friendly and quick. We ordered the taco pizza as that has always been my memory from when I was a kid eating here. Taco pizza tasted as good as always. The taco sauce packets are impossible to open - even with our teeth. After using a butter knife on a couple, the waitress offered us some scissors. I can't make this stuff up. The service is terrible at Happy Joes! it's almost impossible to place an order! I tried calling the W. Locust St. location to order a pizza and the phone rang and rang and rang then I hung up and called back and then I got an AI assistant that couldn't figure out what I wanted to order, so I hung up and then went on their website to order but the soon as I could pick up my order was an hour later, which is ridiculous! This is not the first time this has happened , the same routine has happened to me several times that's why I'm finally posting a review. it is such a shame to see a once good company fall so low, I would not be surprised if they were out of business within the next five years! read more

My husband and I went on a Friday for lunch - arrived at 11am when they first opened. We were the first one's there. We were greeted by a gentlemen, Devyn was his name I believe - very friendly and gave us a rundown of how things work etc. Got us our soda and showed us where the buffet was. When we got to the buffet we were told that if there wasn't a pizza on the buffet that we wanted to tell them and they would make it for us. We tried the salad bar first. Well, they get some stars for putting up with a huge group of loud boys after a baseball game. That being said, I can't say much about the food. There were three of us: One ordered a pepperoni calzone (kind of so-so and boring), one ordered pretzel sticks (my son only ate one because he didn't like them), and I had a salad (I'm convinced it was poured straight out of the bag and then they put dressing on it). Called Locust St. location at 9:35 to place a take out order. Took them forever to answer. The guy that answered the phone said their computers had "just gone down and will take 3-5 min to reboot." Could I call back. I don't know why he couldn't write my order down and enter it when computers come back up. Every time I think Happy Joes Pizza can't get worse, it does. It seems as the quality of their product decreases the prices increase. Our recent order of a medium pizza was $24. The amount of pizza sauce on the crust was so scant, that after peeling back the toppings and cheese we couldn't find any. We used to have Happy Joes Pizza once a week during the Family Night Special, but the pizza is so awful, that we no longer do that. In the past six months. Happy Joe's is one of those rare phenomena that are as enjoyable in adulthood as they were in childhood. The old location at 1414 W Locust was a comfy haven for my little self; I was shocked to discover that they had moved when I was visiting a few years ago, but, since the only way that I get to enjoy them these days is via carry-out during holiday stays with my folks, what really mattered was that the food was (1) still excellent and (2) still excellent to my adult palate. It's both. It's fantastic, and instantly recognizable to anyone that's had it - a singular creation that doesn't really fit into any established category of pizza, not even the Quad Cities-style of Harris, Frank's, etc. A crispy-chewy crust, a sweet sauce, a thick layer of what seems to be a cheddar-mozzarella blend, a generous application of finely-diced Canadian bacon (still my favorite rendition of that topping) and those somewhat odd but delicious sausage-pebbles, above the cheese, of course... as far as I'm concerned, this is the go-to at Happy Joe's *UNLESS* you're getting a taco pizza, of which theirs is the definitive version. I could write a freaking poem about that one, but suffice it to say that it alone justifies the existence of fusion cuisine. I've lived in Connecticut for the past five years, and I've sampled, repeatedly and with great relish, the legendary pies of New Haven and New York. Their status is absolutely earned. Some of my friends and coworkers out east have turned up their noses at Happy Joe's from photos alone, and I say unequivocally that it is their loss. I'm fortunate to have access to the food that I do now, but I think I'm even more fortunate to have evolved a broad definition of exceptional pizza, one that includes Happy Joe's. I understand that they've recently sold a majority stake to an entity that is the largest franchisee of Buffalo Wild Wings, with a goal of national expansion. This is a hometown staple!!! I was raised on HJP my father is a sausage man and my mom love pepperoni, so we would eat half and half. As an adult I evolved into the specialty pizza. Half BLT & Half Taco....YUM!!! It may sound weird but trust me it's a slice of heaven with every bite. Jo Jo was the manager today who had such a delightful personality and enjoyable conversation. They were pretty empty when we got there. They were super attentive, almost hovering. The pizza came out quickly and our "pop" was refilled promptly. We ate at the west locust street location on Sunday August 4 for the lunch buffet, what an expensive joke! Pizza was all very old when we got there, the waitress put our drinks on a dirty table while we were at the buffet searching for anything fresh, we didn't find anything, so what in the world. There was only 2 other people eating in there while we were there, not a surprise. The waitress never came back to refill our drinks so no need for a tip there! I paid 52 dollars for 2 ten year old kids and 2 adults, I will be checking into the price to make sure I wasn't overcharged because that seemed a little high for the happy joes buffet?? My husband and I decided to brave the cold temps tonight and walk over to Happy Joe's for our fave taco pizza. The hostess was delightful and genuinely happy. She was engaging all the way to the booth. The waitress was totally on it throughout our dining experience. Very friendly and personable the entire time we were there. Been a fan since being at the first Happy Joe's in 1972 on The Village of East Davenport. And have known the Whitty family. Came back from Austin, TX to celebrate my birthday with the original Happy Joe's sauerkraut and Canadian Bacon pizza. I can still see Joe Whitty trying this with his patrons in the Village, asking for feedback. I was with my son and good friend at the W. Locust location, formerly the Chef's Hat. 45 minutes waiting for our order because deliveries took precedence. Hmmmmm. But it quickly improved after that, comping us for some of the order, singing me a happy birthday, and a free dessert. Their taco pizza is of course a novelty, and decent tasting. Although the cheese leaves a lot to be desired, it is at best comparable to a frozen pizza you can make at home. Considering it is more expensive than other pizza in the area, I would go elsewhere instead. I really don't get it. I'm a transplant from out of state and one consistency I've found with Happy Joes is anyone who did not grow up in the Quad Cities tends to feel the same as me. My husband is a QC native and he always refused to take me there. Over the past couple years, I have had Happy Joes three times and each time, I am disappointed. With my visit to Happy Joe's I'm 0/2 in my search for what I assume to be Quad Cities-style pizza, but I think the maybe I just didn't quite understand what I was looking for. Happy Joe's doesn't cut their slices in strips, and their sausage is pretty ho-hum, but the thin crust on that make-your-own I got was still admirably crispy, and the quality of the cheese and sauce were more than enough to make it well known that this is some real deal pizza. Apparently the real hallmarks of Quad Cities pizza is the family restaurant location and the taco/German pizza offerings. Either way, it made for a great stop when I was just passing through. read more
