This is a great Indian food spot close to work so we order delivery relatively frequently. I have never eaten at the restaurant but the food is delicious. My fave is the vegetable biryani - it's full of veggies and spices and flavors. We also usually get the chicken tikka which is flavorful. Another favorite is the samosas. We ordered Hungry Bird from DoorDash because we were looking for good vegan options. Unfortunately, we were not aware that they didn't deliver to Harlem, but they called us and told us that they would make an exception and they would still deliver the food. It pains me to write this review, but it's been a long time coming. I supported this place for years, it was one of my favorite restaurants but it has truly been struggling lately. My past few orders have been really upsetting. The portion sizes have been cut in half (literally) and the prices have gone up. If that isn't bad enough, the quality of the food has gone down. I ordered some goat curry a few weeks back and it was all fat. I then ordered some lamb tikka masala and it was rock hard. Today I ordered chicken vindaloo and it was all potato and 3 small pieces of chicken. Unfortunately, I won't be ordering from them again - times are rough, and if you are paying this much for food, we should at least get its worth. I ordered the Hungry Bird special for delivery. The food arrived earlier than expected and the guy that delivered it said all his drivers were out so he walked it to me. He apologized for it being late but he actually delivered early. The food was hot and samosas were fantastic. The samosas were spiced to perfection not so spicy a child could not eat them but spicy enough to add flavor. Next I had Chicken Tikka I loved all the veggies and with the chutney and rice it was very flavorful. . I also ordered chicken bryani which I tasted and it was a little spicy it did have a slight burn to the spice but I love spicy food. I plan to eat it tomorrow with half of the naan. I could eat just the naan and be happy. I will be buying from here again soon. Overall, My food and delivery were above average for my area in the Bronx. I love hungry bird. I very eaten here roughly five times . Hungry bird is fairly new and the first time I ordered I was a bit sketch so i ordered an array of appetizers. Curry chicken, chicken wings, rice, chicken marsala, garlic naan. Everything was absolutely delicious so I've since order their lunch boxes on several different occassions. I generally get the chicken curry, with rice and the spinach and chic peas. Absolutely delicious serving is big enough to split. I've also had the salmon. The food is made fresh and taste very good. I know that I am getting good quality food. The customer service is great There is an option to eat in however I haven't and will likely never eat there but if you have the time why not sit and enjoy your meal. Hungry Bird (ironically named, from their portions to their prices - you wont leave hungry at all) seems a bit out of place on Morris Ave; but then so is a diamond in the rough.A gem in a maze of dilapidated bodegas, garbage cans and discount ".99$ (and up!)" stores Hungry Bird is worth the trek to the Bronx if you're anywhere near here. I often come here from my house in W Harlem. It's that good. Customer service is first and foremost the most important item they deliver, which is apparent in their enthusiastic willingness to meet all customer's needs. Don't like a menu item? No need to feel pretentious about ordering off the menu - they'll suggest it! My first visit, they were brand spankin' new, I expressed that I am vegan and they told me just order what I want and they'll make it right (of course to a certain extent, as I am sure they do not have vegan yogurts, etc.) Saag paneer (sans sag)? No problem, throw some tofu in there. Samosa? Vegan (and effing incredible!) Motor mushroom? Weird name, also can be made vegan. How happy was I when an Indian place popped up out of nowhere in THE BRONX. This momentous occasion is up there with my wedding night and the birth of my first born child, neither of which have happened just yet. Regardless, There's finally an indian restaurant close home, and just for existing its gets 3 stars, the extra 1 star is for just being edible. My standards are incredibly high given the 2 year elite status. Now that i've wasted your time, the food is here is actually quite good. I've gotten the hungry bird special chicken vindaloo and chicken mahkani---the special is a killer deal, comes with rice, naan, appetizer, and the main dish, 2-3 meals. First of all the staff is amazing from the cashier guy to the delivery guys. They all said hello and welcome when I came in. No one rushed me to order. Ok, so I've been here twice now and a 5-star rating upgrade is long overdue! Turns out the 1st time was no fluke: the food here is even better than I thought. This time I ordered delivery to my home, which is around a 5 to 10 min walk away. Judging by some of the horror stories here, I was prepared for quite a hefty wait time. But, nah. Even though it was a Saturday night, our order came within 30 mins. Impressive! I got the Chicken Tikka Masala this time, which was just simply perfection! I'm no expert on Indian food--far from it!--but I hadn't expected to enjoy this dish as much as I did. My friend had what I ordered previously ... the lamb biryani. She, otoh, does happen to know Indian food quite well, and she said her order was "melt-in-your-mouth" fantastic! Her words exactly. High praise coming from her. Yankee Stadium would not have the food I wanted and I was not going to eat hot dogs, fried foods, or cheeseburgers at the Yankees-Mets game. My son (10 years old) is very selective with food and super picky about what he eats. I was skeptical if he would eat this chicken. We crushed this chicken!!! Delicious meal in the back of a cab. We are in the back of this taxi like we were having our first meal in 3 days. We thought the flavor was so good and balanced and the chicken was tender and awesome!! Next time I am back from Chicago to the Bronx I'll have no problem paying for another affordable, solid meal ($14). They even shared their iPhone wall charger to give me a boost on my cell phone while I waited. Nice people. They do not serve beer for those wondering. Check out this place and enjoy!! This is almost always the only Indian food available for delivery during my "lunch" period, so I must admit this review is heavily biased based on selection. However, the food arrives hot via either a 22 minute walk or 8 minute bike ride away from the restaurant; and it's always packaged well and tastes great while I'm working. When asked, they can make your curry spicy (which I would say was a 6/10 on the scale of "asian spicy" and a 10/10 on a scale of "American spicy" - the perfect combo for an American; and they have really great combination options or combination "boxes" for lunch. Next time, I want to try their "very spicy" option to get beyond 10/10 on the American Spicy scale....but only after work (see below). The only reason why I'm not giving it 5 stars, is that I KNOW the curried meat and naan could be done better...but at what cost? Manhattan prices? No thank you. I'll stick with this place. Furthermore, the only reason I don't order from them more is due to a legitimate personal fear after eating a savory yogurt or coconut milk-based curry that I truly enjoy: ...a curry coma. I'd lived here for seven months before I discovered this jewel, and it changed my life! As a vegan, it's definitely slim pickings in the South Bronx, so a restaurant with extensive vegan selections is a godsend. But what really shocked me was how good the food is! I've taken several friends here, and they all agree with me: This is as good, if not better, than any Indian restaurant in Manhattan. One told me it was the best Indian food he'd ever had in New York. The owner is a really terrific guy. This is the ONLY restaurant in the area where you can sit down to a table covered in fresh linen with linen napkins. My meals have always been excellent, but when I took my mother visiting from Florida, the kitchen was on fire. I was devastated to loose my go-to delivery spot. My husband and I tried Indian delivery from a few other places, but nothing stood up to our old favorite. And then we got our food tonight from Hungry Bird. Not only am I happy because the food tonight was so good, but I'm extra happy to know that we have a new place for awesome Indian delivery. OMG I am totally in love! I was brought here a newbie to this area of the Bronx and I was in serious desire for comfort food of any sort. I started with the second best Aloo Papri I've ever had at a restaurant. It's literally one of my favorite dishes to eat at any Indian restaurant. Not one dish that came out of there was regrettable. The Masala Wings are everything you want, and everything you make fun of growing up living in the culture. They've got enough heat, and sauciness to make any wing enthusiast proud. -You haven't truly lived or rolled your eyes with the biggest smile on your face at the same time until you go over to a someone's house for their first 'American Thanksgiving' and have their whole turkey covered in Garam Maslala. It's q!uite a treat. Back on topic! Behl Puri and Pakoras also did not disappoint. They were fresh and crispy with no 'old oil' taste. Which I was definitely pleased. Not a fan at all. This place's appeal comes down to it being the only Indian food place in the South Bronx. And that's it. The food is oily, overly seasoned, the lamb is clearly beef ("moo"), all sauces are pre made (based on the chef I spoke to there). The rice is dried out and you are bound to have several crunchy grains. There is an overt lack of freshness. Does the South Bronx not deserve better??? The hallmark of the restaurant is the owner though. Just the right combination of rudeness, arrogance, and hostility. I would excuse that if the food was good. But oh no, the man has.....how do you say.....no perspective. He will be pleasant up to the point you place an order, then you are no more than an annoyance. It will be 20 to 30 min before you see the efforts of your payment. You will see 5 or 6 delivery bags leave the restaurant before u r served. You will see the owner talk endlessly on his phone in Bengali i believe while u dine. You will see his defensiveness when u ask for an update for your order. I have interestingly though seen him be verbally accosted and insulted by his patrons (me excluded)......may be there is balance is the universe after all. Anyway, I would recommend any slew of indo pak restaurants in upper Manhattan across the 3rd Ave bridge which provide what they advertise: cheap, tasty food without the drama.
