Hungry Bear Cafe is on Highway 120 in Groveland. The service is friendly and the food is delicious. We had burgers, BLT, Club, and chicken sandwiches and drinks. They give you very large portions. They have a clean bathroom. There is a nice park nextdoor if you have time. Very close to Hetch Hetchy and Yosemite. Thanks for a great lunch on May 3!!! read more

This is a great eatery in Groveland close to the supermarket. They have indoor and outdoor seating and offer a huge variety of coffee, sweets and food items. I only wish they served breakfast all day! I had the veggie burger with sweet potato fries and the fries were easily the best part. They were some of the best I've ever had! Staying with family in the area and figured we give them a shot. Cute interior, convenient location convenient considering it's a really small town/area. Right next to the local grocery store. We had French toast and the ultimate omlette. Omlette was really big, very filling and I cleared my plate. Normally I'd have shared a photo but no one wants to see an empty plate photo. My daughter really enjoyed the French toast. It comes with a cup of fruit that looked to be fresh cut and 2 sausage as well. For drinks we had a drip coffee, and a chai tea. The tea was ready before I had finished added cream and sugar to the coffee. Indoor seating is comfortable. It is a tad strange to order and then seat yourself and then pick up your food when the buzzer they give you goes off, but it is a real small place. Quirks are normal in remote locations. The girl who took our order was super polite and gave us the rundown on the setup of the place. Overall good experience and good food. read more

The photo of my supposedly scrambled eggs says it all. We visited on a Wednesday morning. Were greeted by the stench of burning marijuana. Coffee canisters were empty - found out after we paid for fresh coffee. Took 10 minutes to get coffee. Wife ordered a breakfast sandwich on sourdough. Cook said he only had 1 slice of sourdough, so he would have to go to the grocery store? Wife said, make it on white. When it came to our table - one piece of old sourdough, one piece of Wonder bread? My "scrambled eggs" were gray, floating in a pool of melted margarine, and consisted of a fried egg patty that was cut into pieces. I tried one bite - spit it out and ate the breakfast potatoes and bacon. Coffee was self-serve. Canisters were empty, again, when we tried to get a 2nd cup? No one else in the place - who drinks the coffee??? Disaster of a breakfast in a clear mistake of a restaurant. Nearly an hour wait for breakfast and we were the only ones here! We stopped here out of convenience not knowing the wait times would be outrageous for a simple breakfast. It is apparent the cook is not experienced. If you are looking to waste your morning away, stop by here for breakfast. Better yet, just order dinner. Food might be ready by then. Obviously from a frozen bag and had a horrid texture. Tasted fishy, just absolutely inedible. Don't stop at this place on your way to Yosemite because it looks cute. Passing through town on the way to Yosemite, our group of four stopped at The Hungry Bear for breakfast. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most frustrating dining experiences I've had in a long time. From the moment we walked in, the cashier/host was unfriendly and unhelpful, showing no interest in providing even basic customer service. As we looked at the menu, debating between Chicken Fried Steak or Biscuits and Gravy, she abruptly cut in to say, "There is no gravy," and added that eggs could only be ordered scrambled. It was strange, especially at 10 AM, but whatever. Between our group, we ordered a mocha, two breakfast combos (sausage, eggs, bacon, potatoes), and chicken tenders to share. At the time, the restaurant was nearly empty, with just one other couple inside. Despite that, the service was painfully slow. My food came out first, but everything was overcooked, dry, and flavorless--the sausage and potatoes tasted like they had come straight from the freezer. I tried to wait for the rest of my group's meals, but after 15 minutes, there was still no sign of their food. When I got my coffee, (after asking twice) (20-30 minutes later?), there was no apology or acknowledgment from the cashier. More time passed, and another group that had arrived after us started looking restless. They also checked on their order after waiting over 25 minutes, only to find that the cashier was nowhere to be found (she was somewhere in the back?). Then came the most bizarre part of the experience--an older gentleman at a nearby table received biscuits and gravy with an over-easy egg, the exact meal we were told wasn't available. Confused, we asked the waitress about it as she dropped off his plate. Her response? "Oh, he's a local." That made absolutely no sense. Eventually, our group's food arrived in scattered waves. The chicken tenders came out, but one of the breakfast combos was still missing. When we checked again, we were told it had simply been forgotten altogether. They said they would put it in but we asked for a refund for that dish. Between the terrible service, slow kitchen, and bizarre locals-only treatment, choose your own adventure. read more

Title of this review: Keep Driving, Don't Stop After a weekend of camping we stopped to eat here for breakfast. Usually little diners like this have some of the best breakfasts, but we were mistaken. This place was severely understaffed which added to their troubles. There was only 1 lady who would take the orders and then go back and cook the food. It took about 45 minutes from ordering to get the food out to us and then when we got it we were so disappointed. The waffles were basically rocks. Your waffle shouldn't make a sound when tapped against your plate. We thought oh maybe they're brown because they are chocolate covered waffles, nope burnt. How was this even served to us! Also, take a look at the pancake! That's half a pancake at best. The hash browns were oily and the veggie omelet was just ok. This place needs helps bad. They had to turn multiple customers away because the lady couldn't handle any more orders and do the cooking since she was by herself. I do feel bad for her but we shouldn't have been served the food we got. The price was also very high compared to the quality, or lack of quality, we received. read more

My family and I visited Hungry Bear for breakfast. I ordered a black coffee which got the job done and woke me right up but tasted as one would expect diner coffee to taste: basic. I also ordered a stack of buttermilk pancakes with berries. This stack was ginormous but like my coffee, lacked in flavor and I relied heavily on the syrup and butter. It wasn't too busy yet service was pretty slow. All in all, I wasn't blown away by this place but considering food options are limited in this area..I may come back if I'm ever passing through to go to Yosemite. read more
