    First Friday!
    Stanley M.

The Hungerford Building has come a long way since it's origins as the J. Hungerford Smith Company, who, according to RocWiki "made "True Fruit" flavored syrups, as well as the flavor syrup for A&W Root Beer." Interestingly enough, I know descendants of the Smith family and have seen prints of the glass negatives taken of the business during it's heyday. The Hungerford Building is better known today as the home for a vast array of businesses, artist studios and studio apartments. A true multi-purpose facility. Note: this is truly a place you must visit on First Fridays and Second Saturdays! Link: http://rocwiki.org/Hungerford_Building

The Hungerford Building is where I got my first design job, had my first art opening, got my Rochester city crest tattoo, cut my hand open with an xacto knife, built my first piece of furniture and countless other things. I have definitely drank more boxed wine here than anywhere else. It used to be a fruit syrup factory, now it's a great spot for artists and other creative people to set up shop. Management will try and put the fear of god in you when you rent a space here but everyone is really cool. The spaces themselves are great, you can do anything in them. Just sweep 'em up when you're done!

I tend to alternate first Fridays between Hungerford and Anderson Alley, there is always new stuff in both buildings.

We were lucky to make it in time for the guided tour of the mansion. We learned about George Eastman, his family and very interesting facts about the huge mansion. Many of the furnishings were original to the house and the architecture was amazing. They have a lovely cafe inside so we sat down for just a drink since our lunch plans were already made. The Hibiscus ice tea was wonderful. We took our time and viewed the exhibit "Edward Steichen and the Garden". He was a reknowned photographer and horticulturist creating many new strains of his beloved Delphiniums. The detailed information posted by each item was fascinating. Everyone working there was pleasant and helpful. They also have events like movies and music, so check the schedule.

Having visited many contemporary mansions in the Mid-Hudson Valley, I think the Eastman home is comparable if not better. The gardens were beautiful, and I took notes and made a landscaping project list for my own home for next year. The photography museum is icing on the cake. It does seem ironic, though, that while we're visiting a museum devoted to the history of photography, now most of us are taking our pictures on digital media. How times and technology have changed and grown!

Way to get in there before me! I'm impressed and I tip my proverbial hat, although I don't wear a hat. Anyway. But it's a glorious old building in the heart of Rochester, with some decent food options inside. It has its own security and doorman and such, and a lovely floral plant-filled area inside, sort of like a courtyard in the middle of a towerblock. The popular hipster Yelpy place inside is Sapori, which doesn't impress me, but it's hella cool to have such a trendy sandwich shop inside such a lovely old NY State building. I say that because the feel of the place could only be NY State, or perhaps somewhere like Cleveland. It's extremely North East. The building is like what Manhattan buildings would have been like in the 50s. I love it. Like Icona Pop, I love it. Now I'm at the peak of my powers, I'll quit this review.

From inside and out, there's absolutely nothing that isn't short of spectacular! The first floor has retail which includes a tailor, an optometrist, and much more. It also has quite a few sculptures and art pieces. Entrances off of State Street and Main Street lead to the atrium. The atrium itself has another hidden gem in the form of Sapporo's cafe, which will be covered in a later review. Ferns and hostas proliferate throughout this multi-story extravaganza. You really feel like you're in a whimsical garden while walking through the space. Being that it's mostly professionals in the building it's nice and quiet. A perfect spot to read a book or simply have a seat and relax. No matter the weather, you'll leave this space feeling brand new. It's truly remarkable.
