I came in on my last day in the city after visiting the George Eastman House and really didn't think it was worth the walk through. I think a big draw are the restaurants that are inside, and during the day most are closed. A lot of businesses were closed anyway because it was earlier in the week too, but even so it just didn't speak to me. It's more of a community center, with some vendors that seem interesting but the interior of the space is pretty sterile. All these shops, few selling things you really need, with voyeuristic windows in a concrete box. We did go into the new age shop, they had an incense called Angel Dust which I got a kick out of.

It has one of my fav coffee spot, The Dark Horse, Lento and a few other spots. It 's mostly an empty shell. Since I'm not from Rochester I don;t know how it was before, but if all those retail spaces were filled then I think it could have been a nice place I hope it goes back to its former glory. This is a hard review for me, as I remember when this place was really on top of its game. The Village Gate used to be a crazy indoor mall in an old industrial building, with awesome murals, a recreated city street, and eclectic shops. Today, only a handful of the best shops and restaurants remain, the upper levels are desolate and lifeless. The portion that looked like an old city street was converted into offices, the gay pride mural is gone, Ricky's moved downstairs, Antiques and Old Lace moved to University... The Village Gate is merely a ghostly shell of what it used to be. Sure, Ricky is still there, California Rollin' still does all you can eat, the Bop Shop is jammin' and you can get a unique piercing over at Primitive Impressions, but it just isn't the same. Yeah, I still shop here, because I want to support the businesses I have shopped at for years, but I can't deny that the mall feels stale. My friends and I refer to it as the mall of broken dreams. One day, when I win the Mega Millions Jackpot, I am going to buy the Village Gate from Stern and restore it to its former glory.

Former industrial area turned into a shopping complex in a converted warehouse with galleries, independent boutiques & food outlets.

Following an appointment in Rochester my wife and I found ourselves looking for lunch. Not being familiar with the area a quick search told us we were minutes from a nice looking Mexican restaurant. Upon arriving there we quickly realized that the restaurant was located in the Village Gate Square. This is a former industrial/warehouse area that has been revitalized and now contains trendy shops, bars and restaurants. It appears that a lot of care and planning went into creating what it has become. We were very impressed by the art on and around the buildings. Not much appeared to be going on while we were there but Salena's, the restaurant we had eaten at, was drawing a crowd. As per my review of Salena's I could see why. This restaurant was awesome. The food and the staff really made for an exceptional lunch experience. I can only imagine that pre Covid the area was probably quite vibrant. There was plenty of parking. This area could be an example for redevelopment in other cities with similar unused industrial areas. If in the Rochester area I recommend checking the area out for one of the restaurants and shops.

It's not a neighborhood that I normally frequent, but Hickey Freeman keeps bringing me back. You can find some good deals on sports coats and suits if you're lucky. I wasn't familiar with the Hickey Freeman brand, before I moved to Rochester. They were big in the 50s & 60s, but they seem to have fallen under the radar in the past few decades after multiple changes in ownership. They have an overall good reputation in the fashion community, with positive feedback in terms of construction quality. I have 3 suits and I'm happy with all 3. They needed very slight tailoring (mostly simple hemming), which added slightly to the cost. But all 3 wool suits are fully canvassed, wool and cost $3-400 each (retail for $1000+). I think if you're lucky, you can find suits for $299. I think they are much higher quality than a similarly priced J Crew Ludlow suit.

I've gotten suits here for under $100 after all markdowns. Hickey suits are stylish but can also be conservative. They are very high quality and are perfect for business. I own seven or eight of their suits a handful are standard staple types and others are a bit more daring colorwise. I do lament the fact that they discontinued the warehouse sales in Rochester where the selection was even better than the factory store. Rochester folks had it very good and were able to score serious bargains.

I will start by saying this Walmart is an older one and doesn't appear to be set up on the more modern style Walmarts are going too. That being said-the water was at the back of the store which would've been okay except there were no carts. I attempted to purchase 3 bottles of alkaline water but to my dismay, the cashier snatched them up and told me she couldn't sell them to me. I tried to clarify but she didn't really give a good explanation other than they couldn't be sold and then called a manager. The manager came to the register, didn't acknowledge or address me, or provide a solution other than to radio to someone to take the remaining bottles off the shelf. Not a great interaction but I can't say I'm too surprised. Also if you're not local, you may not be used to paying for bags-just a reminder for those visiting out of town.

I also threw in a pencil case to my order as I started a new job where I'll need one. I never imagined having to wait 25 minutes for two items. I kept calling the posted "pick up number", which went to voicemail each time. The main store phone number just rang and rang. There is no option on the app to message anyone. Staff members were taking their sweet time, talking and laughing with customers. The first staff member I asked about my order walked away from me. The second person I asked for an ETA said "I don't know, I just bring the items out." Luckily the final employee I interacted with, who brought my items out, was friendly and professional. As a last screw you to the customer, someone decided to put a pickup sticker directly on my pencil case, so it's all sticky and damaged. Do I dare try to get a replacement at this mess of an operation?
