- Hungers (Beaumont)
The name is Hungers, and by the end of the night, that's exactly what we were: hungry.
I'll start with the positive. The burger was actually pretty good--better than most burger joints in Beaumont. Granted, that's a bit like being the tallest hobbit in the Shire, but credit where credit is due.
Now for the rest of the experience.
We waited 40 minutes for our food on what was only a moderately busy evening. When it finally arrived, we dug in and things seemed promising. Then halfway through my burger, I felt something strange. I pulled it out and discovered a long, dark black hair embedded in the middle of the burger patty.
Nothing says "fresh off the grill" quite like unexpected protein.
After immediately losing my appetite and nearly convulsing, I took the burger to the counter. The woman who took our order--whose personality could best be described as "customer service witness protection program"--informed me that the hair couldn't possibly be theirs because they wear hair nets.
Case closed, apparently.
I asked for a manager. He arrived and immediately launched into the same defense. "We wear hair nets."
An interesting argument considering he wasn't wearing one himself.
Then came the courtroom drama. The manager grabbed the hair and attempted to pull it out, seemingly trying to determine whether I had secretly smuggled in my own hair for an elaborate burger fraud scheme. Unfortunately for his theory, the hair was firmly embedded in the patty and wouldn't come out.
The evidence was literally cooked into the crime scene.
He reluctantly offered a refund and a replacement burger. I asked, "Will I have to wait another 40 minutes?"
He assured me it wasn't busy and it wouldn't take that long.
Forty minutes later, we were still waiting.
No burger. No update. No apology.
So we left.
Hungers may advertise halal, but for me it's more like "hel-la no."
The food was decent. The service was abysmal. The accountability was nonexistent. And despite spending nearly an hour and a half there, we somehow left hungrier than when we arrived.
