Humboldt Bay Coffee is the best organic coffee that we have tried. Over the years we've tried other brands, but always go back to our favorite. They consistently produce a perfectly roasted, smooth and aromatic coffee. Their bags have beautiful original art on them which are nice to have on display on the kitchen counter. We've given this coffee as Christmas gifts for the last few years and our family and friends have loved it! The dark roast is not acidic like many other brands tend to be, making it a good choice for those sensitive to acidic coffee. Had a weird experience that turned me off to this company. Ordered 5lbs of coffee and added 2 green zip-up sweatshirts on a whim. Received the products in a timely manner but the shirts were wrong. They were black pullovers and looked dumpy. Called regarding the mistake and the woman said she would send me an email with a shipping label and send out the correct shirts. Received the correct shirts in a little over a week but never received an email with the shipping label. I work very long hours as a nurse and don't have time to make calls during business hours. (My call regarding the mistake was made while I was eating on break at work). A couple weeks went by and I received a voicemail from the same lady that sounded very snotty and rude, saying they have not received the incorrect sweatshirts back and that she would sent the email again and expects the shirts right away or will charge my credit card. I was mildly upset by the rudeness of the woman and mentioned it to fellow nurses and surgeons during my next case. They said by California law, you are not expected to send back incorrect orders. But I didn't want the unordered sweatshirts and would have gladly sent the poorly made, expensive advertisements back if I had received the shipping label. I looked the next day in my junk box and an email was there. But only ONE email, not the 2 she had supposedly sent. Something tells me this was intentional. As I was boxing up the sweatshirts, my son saw them and asked to keep one in remembrance of his brother who was a Humboldt State student before his passing. I reluctantly told him yes and called the company. They charged my credit card $98 for the 2 shirts that I didn't order. Immediately upon washing the shirts, they had balls on them and looked even cheaper than when we received them. I put mine in the Goodwill donations box. Needless to say, I won't bother ordering bulk bags of coffee from them again. It's good, but not phenomenal and my order and intended future business was more about nostalgia for Humboldt county, supporting a Humboldt business and our deceased son. Wow! A fantastic roasterie! I found their Jolly Roger beans! This is NOT the Arabica bean, but is the Canephora or Robusta bean. It has higher amounts of caffeine, which I need to wake up with. Well, I am an addict drinking 5 Espressos in a ten ounce mug, 4-6 mugs a day. WHEW! A pound of Jolly Roger, and a pound of shipbuilders dark. It's called a custom blend. After this I don't think I can ever go back to grocery store coffee! Well, I never did do grocery store coffee. I have always enjoyed various blends from Costco, but they are always arabica beans. Can't get robusta coffee's from Costco. Wife thinks ten dollars a pound is expensive, but the BEST of anything is usually only about 10% more! I have drunk coffees in all parts of the world. The finest brews to be found. My most exquisite experience was on a coffee plantation in the relatively unexplored forests of Honduras. We awakened in the morning to the wonderful smell of freshly brewed coffee. It was in a hot ceramic cup, at least a liter. Drinking that coffee was like having died and gone to heaven. I had been making and drinking coffee in the big urns aboard a US Navy ship for the last few years, and sampling various coffees all around the Mediterranean. Then Iceland, which only buys good coffees. BUT, Humboldt Bay's "Shipbuilders Blend" is easily the equal of the world's great coffees! The right beans, the proper roasting time, at the right price! We stopped here on a two week long road trip to refill our coffee stash. I googled local organic coffee roasters and this came up first and I am so so glad it did. The sweetest lady came out to take our order, we basically said give us your favorite. She came out with a 1lb bag of wide awake and a sample holiday bag. I regret not buying more the second I smelled the bag..still do. I refuse to buy any other coffee again. I am actually in process of ordering a few bags online, because when we made coffee this morning I could taste it wasn't Humboldt Bay Coffee and I've never been particular about my coffee...well I am now. I have kidney problems so I drink a small cup and have to pretty much avoid caffeine the rest of the day, so I want my coffee to be worth it. The wide awake blend was soo good I had to have a little extra several mornings. It seems to be easier on my stomach as well. C A M P I N G. B L E N D. This coffee will remind you of all the best times you've ever had outdoors with your best friends, it's the best coffee I've ever had. She's not toooooo bitter, but she's not catering to anyone's sweet tooth either. It's a conflict of sweet combined with a hint of idgaf. I'd feel complete sitting on the edge of a cliff drinking this at sunrise in some mountainous forest. The flavor is sweet and dark, smoky and rich, not unlike your most cherished memories of thriving outdoors with your BFFs, your ride-or-dies. You know that one scene in Ratatouille when the mega-bigwig critic guy tastes the food and is immediately transported back to his childhood? Well that's ExAcTLY how I felt drinking this coffee. Many many coffees have I tried all over the world, and this one takes the (coffee) cake. I keep thinking I'll get tired of it, but I really never do. It happily fuels my most productive workdays. I emailed the company, and they responded promptly with an email full of quirky coffee puns. They're the nicest people ever, and their coffee bags have v cool artwork that makes you stare. The art isn't the coffee, but it's a really nice addition. They're the kind of coffee bags you pin up on your wall like trophies after they're empty, and it's the kind of coffee you tell your friends about. Overall, 10/10 coffee and 10/10 staff. Absolutely fantastic service! You should know, however, that they don't sell brewed coffee here. They only sell the raw product itself. That being said, if you know what you want they will gladly sell it to you at a reasonable price. What's better, if you have an idea of what you want, or know what you don't like, these folks will very sagaciously guide you to a blend and grind that should suit your purposes. On the day I popped in they had Tanzanian Pea Berry which they custom ground for me at the time. Awesome. read more
