Eight Rooftop Bar - The Etoile

After being politely shown the door on our first visit, stating no kids after 7 pm, we were told to…read morereturn the next day before 7, to try out their cocktails (and also to checkout the view) from their rooftop. Its a pretty difficult sell for a rooftop bar to a New Yorker, but then every rooftop also tells a story! And what a wonderful story it was! Nestled on the Eight floor of Grand Hotel, is this really well decorated rooftop bar with an amazing menu. A pretty fancy menu explains the different flavor profiles to order from along with ABV's - something we never saw on a cocktail menu! Docking one star only because they couldn't make the cocktail that I really wanted - a Rum Old Fashioned. Tried The Etoile (Penicillin) instead, which was very nice too and so was the counting sheep (Whiskey Sour). The views on a rainy/overcast day were pretty good too and we could only imagine how spectacular summer days in Oslo could be from this rooftop! Service was good, noise levels on the lower end. The Frosta Chips were tasty!

The bar has a nice view of the surrounding rooftops and even affords a glimpse of the water. I tried the etoile to drink. My cocktail had a tasty blend of flavors. Overall, I would recommend Eight Rooftop bar for cocktails and ambiance in Oslo.

I must say I have not visited many cocktail bars in Oslo. However this gin bar was very nice with…read moregood atmosphere and amazing drinks. The bartenders were very professional and made each drink with same precision. They used fresh ingredients like fruits and herbs, hence made the drinks delicious. The prices were also normal. 110-20 nok for a drink more or less which I find reasonable. I had three different drinks and they were all delicious. One of them was a frozen mojito which tasted like fresh mint and was purely green! The other one was cucumber gin drink which purely tasted like cucumber. And the last one was in a huuuge glass with something fizzy and taste of citrus fruits, which was my favorite but can't recall the name. The music was loungy in the background, so not a party place. Rather a place to sit and have a chat. The interior was cozy with high and low tables. We were lucky to get a seat next to the bar, but in general terms the seats were constantly taken. I definitely recommend this for a night startup or a cozy drinks night!

Chair is most definitely a go-to place in Oslo, but only if you're as fond of gin as Jesus'…read moredisciples were of wine. They serve most kinds of gin from most corners of the world with a creative, fresh-tasting twist that will blow your mind. They have two menus to chose drinks from, both a gin- and a cocktail-menu. But the list is long, and if the bar isn't too full I would recommend asking the skilled Masters of the Bar or simply going with the gin of the house with pomegranate (because behold, it's a sensation for the taste buds...and probably also the buzz). I'd say this spot is perfect for both groups of friends, a night out with the office or a date. The atmosphere comfortable with dim lights, lovely interiors and music to set the mood. Just keep in mind, the prices are a little stiff, but definitely worth the splurge.

We'd enjoyed a series of great Nordic-style meals on our trip to Copenhagen and then Oslo. But, on…read moreour last night with our granddaughter in Oslo, we craved a change from all those delicious steamed-in-cream muscles, tasty baked salmon and classic smoresbords. Izakaya fit the bill. In fact, it may have ended up being the best meal of our week-long trip. Yes, as you've read and can see from other Yelpers' photos, it's teeny tiny inside. But, when you get lucky and get seated, it's nice and cozy. You certainly aren't merely one 2-top in a long boring row of tables that's for sure. There's no sign outside but because it has a distinctive look on the exterior (see photos of the heavy grillwork on the windows) you really can't miss it. A Yelper's description of 'Japanese tapas' is right on the mark, tho this is a bit of mixed metaphor. Dishes (especially the last two below) are relatively small. Maybe four dishes will do for two people but you'll likely end up as we three did: wanting a bit more. We started with the Gyoza. Definitely delicious and served piping hot. Next was Bang Bang Ji - shredded chicken, julienned cucumber, and a spicy sauce. Good and a nice prelude to the Mazemen. Our hands-down favorite of the night was the Mazemen, broth-less ramen with a delicious sauce, oil, and toppings. Especially delicious with the egg (poached?) mixed in. Had we immediately ordered another three more bowls of this wonderfully tasty dish I doubt if there'd have been much of an objection! Okonomiyaki - a savory pancake. Good. We didn't want to leave without a bit more. So, we ordered the Senmaizuke, pickled turnip and chili with a sweet, tangy vinegar marinade, and the Shiitake no fukumeni, mushrooms simmered in a sweet and savory broth. Both of these relatively small dishes were quite delicious - but really would have tasted best as early appetizers. The Kirin beer really hit the spot. Service was quick and efficient. Pacing was fine with no rush despite the line that had formed in the little foyer. YELPER HINT: if you're stuck in the line but thirsty, you can go on in and stand at a small (2 ft. wide) open section of the bar and order/pay for beers (not sure about their cocktails) and then re-take your place in line. In short, Izakaya could - and likely will - provide your tastiest, most interesting and perhaps even your most delicious meal in wonderful Oslo.
