We flew into Durham Tees Valley Airport earlier this year for a short break. A lovely little…read moreairport with nice facilities. This would have been a firm four stars if not for one fact. Arriving on a Friday afternoon virtually no car rental is possible. It is that Europcar anyway operates a drop-off service from Darlington and provides an out-if-hours service, otherwise we would have come seriously unstuck.
Until recently, I was a regular traveller to Teesside on business. After years of travelling on by…read moretrain GNER, I thought I'd give the bmi service to the (then) Teesside International Airport. Since then, I've become a firm fan. It's closer to Teesside and, being very small (just two gates!), is very easy to use. OK, so the facilities are a bit limited, but it compares well with Darlington station. Although on principle I'd preferred to have used the train (lower carbon emissions), the lousy connections from Darlington to Middlesbrough, coupled with the difference in price, made it a no-brainer. £75 return on bmi compared with over £200 on GNER? The four return flights a day are well timed for business in either direction, too. The only downside is having to use Heathrow at the other end, but then King's Cross during the rebuilding work is hardly pleasant, either. The only thing I don't like is the new name - it's nowhere near Durham, as it implies. Still, that's a minor quibble.

There is also a Burger King, wine bar, fancy burger place, super drug and newsagents. The staff are friendly. Security check in is fast and easy. Would be good to have some benches or something outside to enjoy some fresh air if you are too early for your flight.

It's a lovely, friendly place where everyone knows each other and the management take a real interest in the running of operations. And if you do happen to have a jet to charter, then definitely give them a call!

One of the big bonuses about humberside airport, for those who live in Hull and surrounding areas,…read moreis that it is very near. Getting to Manchester can take forever but from Hull to Humberside airport is a mere 30 minutes, or so, in taxi. The airport is very small and has a sort of cosy atmosphere. However shops are very limited and expensive. It is better to pack up for the airport than try the cafes unless you want to pay an arm and a leg. Also it can take ages to get served. The duty free area is not bad for such a small airport. Humberside is only used by some travel companies and to some destinations. Parking is not bad.

Although I haven't learned to fly with them myself, I know they've got an excellent success rate, probably largely due to the attitude of the instructors.
