Huckleberry Fence built the nicest fence I have ever had. Troy their lead fence man is an amazing fence builder. He lined up all of our 4x6 posts by eye and they were perfectly straight. The fence used premium fence boards hand selected by the crew. They were all great looking boards. The bottom of the fence was 2x12 treated wood stained dark and the slats were stained a cedar making for a very nice looking fence. Michael, the owner, threw in the post caps to protect the posts and provide a finished look to the fence. Michael wants to be sure whatever he builds is of the highest quality. If you find something wrong, you need to let him or his crew know and they will make it right. The only issue I ran into was a couple of delays during the process such as almost two weeks after the previous fence was torn down before the building started. We contracted with Huckleberry to build a 6' x 150' pressure treated, 4x4 hogwire fence around our back yard. To begin, Michael, the GM, arrived ON TIME for the evaluation, provided not only the quote but BBB and bonding information, allowing us to look up their BBB history. This was a level of transparency that I didn't expect and wasn't provided by other vendors. The professionalism Michael displayed, the competiveness of the quote, and the ability to answer questions directly without ambiguity was what won them the job. Once scheduling was complete, we had Jeremy and John on-site to perform the installation. Communication from the team was great, both were professional but also personable, making for a very easy engagement. At one point during the build, we identified that the framing material on the quote didn't meet the aesthetics we were looking for [full PT vs. kiln fired fir framing]. Michael and team were very accommodating in making the material change and the attitude was 'no harm, no foul', despite the mistake in material being completely on us. Overall it was a great experience and we ended up with a fabulous fence for our yard and an incredibly happy puppy who gets to go crazy in her new space. Do not sign a contract with Huckleberry Fence and Deck. 1) They did not build my fence to spec and have refused to fix it. 2) They did a terrible job building the fence. It is not straight, or holding up well after 6 months. 3) The gates do not work after 3 attempts at fixing them over several months. 4) They stood on my hot tub cover and got stain on it. They said they couldn't move the hot tub to get access to the fence because it was too heavy. So they climbed and walked on the hot tub cover to stain fence. I moved it for them. 5) They lied to me on multiple occasions. Everyone in the organization seems to lie and to act disingenuously. 6) They said they would immediately fix problems and build a small additional section of fence and then did not give me a contract for months and then said they lost my contact information (other people have complained of this, a convenient excuse). 7) They said they would sand an old bench of mine next to the fence to make up for the problems and to say sorry.... they never did it. 8) Everyone blamed each other and no one would take responsibility, including Michael the foreman and Mike Anson the owner. 9) I have spent probably 20 hours dealing with them. 10) I plan on taking them to small claims court. Probably another waste of my time, but they are so bad that I don't want another homeowner to go through this. Had an appointment to meet with the estimator (Michael) today at Noon to replace my deck. I know people are busy, so I expressed that I appreciated them fitting me in to their schedule. I Left work with plenty of time to get to the house with a few minutes to spare. On my way to the house I (at 11:50) I received a text that the estimator had already shown up, left his card with one of the kids at home and left the premises. Did not call me, did not wait until the scheduled time we were to meet. When I arrived at the house (before noon) I called the number on the card and talked to a woman who said she would call the estimator and get right back to me. I waited for 15 minutes and called her back. I left a voice mail stating that I left work for this and was still waiting. If someone could please call me and let me know if the estimator was coming back. I waited another 10 minutes and went back to work. Never received a call back from them. Contrary to what anyone might think, Huckleberry Fencing is still building the best fencing in Eugene and the surrounding communities. They can get very busy particularly in the summer months, but trust me, the wait is totally worth it. We just had them do our fence in Feb 2020 and we couldn't be more pleased with the results. These are just a few of the reasons why. 1. Quick response time- Work started on our fence within a week of our contract. 2. The BEST quality workmanship- I have been in construction myself and I can tell you these guys are truly Master Craftsman. We had a fence transition to a higher slope that 3 other local fence contractors were unable or did not want to attempt. These guys were able to come up with a quick solution on first glace and it turned out beautiful. 3. Super communication! I would put this as the best reason you should go with Huckleberry. Michael and his crew were phenomenal and made every aspect of the whole process from the contract to putting up the last board a truly enjoyable experience. Michael and his 2 workers, Marcus and Cody truly wanted to know how we really visualized our fence and then just naturally made it happen. We truly felt comfortable asking any questions we had and always received complete and understandable answers. They were all respectful and very easy to get along with. We always were kept in the loop when it came to their progress. The owner himself also paid a visit to see the progress. These comments are based on my own professional experience as a contractor. Huckleberry Fence did high quality work for us. In response to a deer problem, they extended the height of our chain link fence and built headers over chain link gates along our alley. Where we wanted a more attractive barrier, they built a small section of wood and wire fence and gate that is well-designed and excellently crafted. They also cleared over-growth and yard debris around the fence. Mike, Mike, Cyrus and their crew were friendly, helpful and communicated well while they were on site. They took great care to do a good and careful job. The project was a bit slow getting started; once started, it moved well, despite needing a change mid-stream, and was completed only a day later than promised. Mike Anson was knowledgeable and creative in his approach to our problem and with his crew performed the work very professionally. read more

They installed a deck and fencing. It took forever for them to get the job started and way to long to finish. The tab got larger by the day. The "Aw shucks ma'am" approach to why they didn't factor this or that in to the estimate became a daily occurrence. ASF Ironworks is owned by the same 'Mike' as Huckleberry. They have almost $5000.00 dollars of mine for a gate job I commissioned and never received. I paid them for it July 2020. When I told Mike I wanted a refund this year, he said he didn't have the money! I guess he misappropriated my funds elsewhere. My advise is steer clear of Huckleberry, ASF Ironworks and Earthlink Landscaping. All owned by Mike. Mike who says he's a Coburg cop. Not very lawful conduct if you ask me. read more

I'm a bit of a landscaping freak when it comes to pimping out the yard with a nice rock wall, sharp looking fence or a well thought out planting scheme. I regularly walk neighborhoods just to check out these very things and fortunately South Eugene has more than a few. I'll even stop the car on errands or go an extra 10 blocks just to check something out again. I've haven't had a Huckleberry Fence made for me yet but I see their work everywhere and I like it. These guys must be doing like 90% of the nice wood fence jobs in town, it's freaking ridiculous. The cheesy little metal signs tacked to a corner of the fence mocking me everytime with their tagline on a fake paint splash: "Yep, it's another Huckleberry Fence" Really? you get the question so much you had signs made. I admit I like the fences I've seen. They use nice wood, creative details but not too fancy. Most have held up well but nothing seems much older than 10 years. We'll see, the true test of a good fence is time. read more

I'm not surprised at all to see other negative reviews about this company after their work at my home today. Would give zero stars if I could. DO NOT USE this company if you want a fence built in a timely and professional manner! They happily collected our deposit and then pushed us back every two weeks for SIX MONTHS. Received a call yesterday that they were coming today. We've waited for months only to have had issue after issue with the work throughout the day. They went out of their way to look for shortcuts--examples include using a used (and stained an entirely different color than our fence) post, and not even screwing in an entire fence panel. We needed to accommodate a tree along the fence line and the work is shoddy to be polite. It looks awful (uneven, a huge gap on one side) and doesn't have any structural integrity--when asked to fix it, they cut and run. Actually left and refused. They also refused to compensate us for the new fence post of ours that they used when the stained and pre-used one they brought and installed wouldn't do. I would NEVER RECOMMEND this company and hope this review saves someone the time, headache and expense of hiring them. There are several other fence building companies in Eugene/Springfield to choose from if professionalism, integrity, and the quality of your fence matter to you. read more

I've had these folks do two jobs for me. One was personal and the other was a job I asked them to do for our home owners association. For my personal job, I had numerous fence posts that needed to be replaced. I also needed the fence to be reattached to several places where it had pulled away from the existing good posts. Brad came out on time to bid the job and clearly explained to me what needed to be done and how much it would cost. Once hired, his crew came when they said they would and finished the job in a timely manner and cleaned up when they were done. For my HOA, we needed a new barrier built around a culvert. Brad's crew removed the old, rotten one and replaced it with a new one that has received lots of good feedback from our residents. read more

I used Huckleberry Fence to build a beautiful, well-built fence 20 years ago and then again 6 years ago. Apparently, they have had a new owner for the last 5 years, and his work is not up to the same standard as before. The biggest problem we had was that the new owner came to our house, promised to restore our previously beautiful fence to its original quality after it was damaged by a falling tree during the ice storm, saying that it would be fixed to its original quality. I also needed three 4x4 posts replaced and reset. He said he would do that, too. He then required a $925 down payment with another $925 due on completion. $1850 is an exorbitant amount for a simple fence repair, but we thought we were going to get the best. As is turned out, the guys finally came and worked for about an hour and 1/2, did not replace any posts, and did a repair job that was okay, but pretty minimal. In the end, they did finally take $300 off the bill for the 3 posts which they had bid for but did not use. When I asked why the fence wasn't restored to its original quality, they told me that to do that they would have to move the entire fence 6 inches. Obviously, I wasn't going to allow them to touch the parts of the fence that were not damaged! Bottom line, the workers were very kind and tried to do their best, but the boss seemed to have made a bid way beyond what they intended to deliver. It didn't appear that he had communicated with the workers about what was expected. Overall, we paid was too much for a simple repair. read more

I was going to give this company Four "stars" for the fence (including man-gate, and large custom gate) but the followup experience to fix several things (i.e finishing painting fence, paint Steel gate posts and fix gate latch) has been abysmal to say the least. This company has a serious communication problem between it's owner and workers... Several examples... I explicitly communicated to the Team leader that I wanted to keep some of the pressure-cheated(sp) boards that were used for existing fencing.. These were taken and i had to ask for them back. Pea Gravel.. I use for the existing paths and walkways.. I mentioned and showed the owner where I wanted some extra pea gravel distributed along an existing fence. Apparently this was never communicated to the workers. The Owner said he could use some of pea gravel from the original bid to do this. One of the workers ended up distributing pea gravel along a plant bed that was not needed..(pea gravel on a plant bed???) I ended up paying extra $250 for the gravel.. I have called/emailed the company several time without any luck.. very disappointed indeed.. I know its still the rainy season but at least you can give me a call when you can come out and do this.. especially to fix the gate latch... not sure if I would recommend this company. read more

The true test of any company is how they deal with customer service in case of any issues/problems that might arise afterwords. The fence and gates we had installed look terrific, but after 3 attempts to fix the gate settling and not latching correctly, I am not getting called back anymore. The ONLY representative of this company that you can reach with the one phone number listed is "Kris, the estimator". We talked last nearly 2 weeks ago and he stated that the one post needed to be re-cemented--it still hasn't been addressed, and it's nearly impossible to open and close now. My calls aren't being returned now. I am really not one to complain much, but I suppose I'll have to contact the BBB, etc. It's too bad because they really do good work. Update.......To their credit, they DID come by again on 8-17 and redid the post holding up the gate that kept sinking. Hopefully that will solve the problem! read more

Here is part of a letter that was sent to the owner: I am not at all satisfied with the quality of work being done on my fence and becoming increasing frustrated and concerned with Huckleberry Fence and Deck. While I have and continually being given assurances of a quality installation of the fence and quality of work, in reality it is falling well short of our agreement. As we discussed, you are charging a premium for the work being done and therefore I expect quality construction. I chose your company because of the advertising and promises you personally made assuring of certain construction facts, and of quality and expeditious work. Here are some issues you may and I needed to address with this company: Their contract they use is vague, without detail and contained information and contingencies not previously discussed in small print. - Many posts were set from 10"-14", not the 22"-24" stated - Fence Posts were not set in a straight line or square. - It was noted that posts and boards were split or cracked. - Cement was not confined to the post holes and excessive concrete is splattered between holes. - Worker's cleaned tools and wheelbarrows out on neighbor's property leaving dried hard concrete, concrete powder and rocks. In addition, a large amount of dry, hard, used concrete was dumped onto neighbor's driveway and property. - Apparently there is not a foreman on site who takes responsibility for what is being done on site. The workers display no pride of workmanship as evidenced by sloppy work, non functioning gate etc. - Gate is non functional because it cannot be opened or closed without beating it open or shut. - Seller avoidance until it was time to be paid. During a visit to the property owner made contact with your employees, but not me. I would have liked to go over my concerns with you. More issues: - Posts not square to fence with many set in ground10-14" versus 22"-24" advertised. - Many cracked or split boards and posts. - A fence not in a straight line as you look across the top or down the side and that go to the surface of the ground. - A gate that needs to be beat open and shut. - No clean up and removal of concrete not in the holes on neighbors and my property. - A lot of worry and need on my part instructing workers on what needed to be done. This is time consuming and frustrating and not something I should need to do since I hired to have it done. Without my overview it is questionable if ever would have been done right. - No guarantee against materials and workmanship, but demand of payment immediately, with 60% down before they ever started the work. - Lack of workers pride in their work - I am glad Huckleberry Fence is gone.
