So. Many. People. I think the Hub has become the standard place to go for climbing. Much like the location in Missisauga, they feature a wall that's shaped like a dragon that even beginners can climb. A great opportunity for a photo opp! The outside of this building has a big dragon painted on it, you can miss it. If you are planning on coming here for the first time, you can save time for yourself and fill out some of the waivers online. If you don't, you can still do it in person on their iPads. I hadn't been climbing in a while and needed a quick refresher of what the protocol was for using the auto-belays. They had a lot of employees working there so it didn't take too long for my turn. After they go through the steps with you, the test just consists of you demonstrating how to clip in with safety checks, then climb up the wall and show them that you can get back down safely. I was a solo-climber that day and was looking to use the auto-belay routes. I liked that they had quite a few routes and they were all spread out along a flat wall so you didn't have to worry about crossing over onto other routes. Unfortunately, this area was just flooded with kids. They have party rooms at The Hub and Saturday afternoon was prime time for a birthday party - even during Covid! There were lots of kids running around between walls. There were also a lot of beginner orientations going on so there was always one route that was a little bit occupied. They carry some gear like shoes and harnesses for kids and adults. There were some intro packages that included a harness and shoes package. They seemed to have a pretty reasonable selection.

Overall: A good place to climb - if you are here for the climbs! I will go over the overall atmosphere and experience below. As someone who climbs regularly, I have the equipment and etc at home. For those who would like to try climbing at this location for the first time - it is costly! And if you aren't prepared, it will take you a while to get situation. They go over rules and safety very thoroughly, I believe I watched 2-4 videos and signed 2 waivers to climb. On top of buying rental shoes, not that it is necessary but it adds to the experience, we had to purchase chalk separately. In comparison to other climbing gyms we were either given the option of free chalk for first time visits or ability to rent chalk. The workers were giving more affordable options such as a chalk block ($3) but you need to have your own bag for it (ziplock or the $30 chalk bags they sell) and crush it yourself. The loose chalk we bought ran us $15, and it's not the best quality either, not that it's the establishments fault for that. Coming here was a spur of the moment idea so keep an eye out for their hours as it seems it is regularly from 3-11pm. Luckily the time we arrived it was fairly empty. Our orientation covered a good amount of basics. In comparison to other places, there are a lot more kids and it filled up pretty quickly after 5 which was to be expected. For the climbs itself, they had a lot of variety when it came to walls and climbs. Something that was nice was that there are plenty of climbs for your level scattered throughout the gym. The only thing for me is that I am used to V-graded climbs and the colours were hard to remember for a first time visit and hard to gauge the level. We really enjoyed the dragon climb and the different structures throughout. I'm not too sure if this is the place I would go out of my way to visit, but if I am in the area it's not a bad place to climb. Have yet to see what it's like in peak hours. TDLR: If you have the equipment ready - awesome place to climb if you are in the area.

I have been climbing at the Hub Markham for ~4 months now and it is great!! The facility and people are top notch. Primarily a boulder gym with both autobelay and some top rope to keep you busy. I really enjoy the bouldering problems. There are lots at all the levels to challenge you, especially the overhang area. As well as climbing, the have a gamefied area , tons of fun, weight area and yoga classes to help keep you limber. Nice size party room for those wanting to celebrate a special occasion with climbing. Change rooms have plenty of lockers and a shower forafter those tough workouts. Great place, give it a try, I am certain you will quickly become addicted to climbing, just like I have.

Indoor rock climbing and bouldering in Markham. Great workout and lots of fun for all ages (4+). Staff are friendly. Good for both big and small groups. Bring your own lock for the locker. Free Wi-Fi.

I take my kids to hub every month. We really enjoy it there. Considering we go on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, it's never that busy. Such a large environment. Both my kids are 6 an 9, the staff is always walking around making sure everyone is having a fun and safe time. Always giving tips and hints to make your time there more enjoyable. Staff is really great.

Great for bouldering. Top rope section is very small. Climbs: 5/5 Many varying grades. Busyness: 4/5 Busy on Tue and Wed nights. Staff: 5/5 Friendly and helpful. Change room: 3/5 sometime smells. Check out their new Moon Board! I am a weekly climber at the hub. This place is great for bouldering for beginners and veterans. There are an array of climbs ranging in difficulty. The rating system seems to be skewed to the easier side compared to other places. There are two underhanging caves which are loads of fun. The dragon is the tallest feature at this place and falls into a giant foam pit. The Hub is often busy on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Sunday is a great day to go assume a party isn't going on. The change rooms are a bit small and the smell doesn't seem to dissipate. On busy nights it may be hard to find a locker but more are available just outside of the washroom. Top rope is limited here with only a few climbs. I come frequented and love bringing new climbers. Highly recommend for new comers as this place is very welcoming.

FINALLY a good bouldering gym in the GTA region! *Disclaimer: As a beginner, I worry about different things than a more seasoned climber may worry about so this review will be written in the perspective of a beginner. The first thing you notice when you walk into The Hub is how incredibly large and CLEAN it is. Obviously, since it has just opened.. but also clean because The Hub arranges it's problems based on colour and doesn't use the conventional taping method that True North and most other gyms use. The OCD side of me really enjoys seeing the nice thematic look of it all :). My only concern is that I don't get to try different holds with certain colours. You have to pretty much commit to a certain hold for an entire problem. There were tons of problems for any level so getting engaged is not an issue for a boulderer at any level. What's fantastic about The Hub is they will have beginner puzzles for each different type of surface. Want to learn to scale an arch? There's a V0 for that. Want to learn how to climb uneven surfaces ? There's a V0 for that! There is even a wall that simulates the wall used for world bouldering competition! There are two areas where you can top out - one which includes a slide while the other features a down climb. If you're interested in actual belay rock climbing, there are several walls for that but they are much shorter than other facilities. If you're coming for belayed rock climbing, go else where because The Hub's strong suit is bouldering. The ultimate challenge of The Hub however, is the dragon - a huge overhang structure that looms over you. As it is so tall, a huge foam pit is placed at the bottom rather than a pad. Anyone can (attempt to) conquer the dragon and it has become the main challenge for most people. In terms of safety, The Hub has covered all its bases - thick double lined pads layer the floor which (based on many experiences) don't have a problem padding all my falls haha! Run, don't walk to The Hub. It's a great activity for a large group of friends and really switches up your work out. Trust me, you'll be sore the next day and your palms will be burning.

Review Highlights - Hub Climbing-Markham

I spent the day getting the hang of bouldering, which I think means rock climbing without ropes/harnesses.

The facility is clean, albeit being on the small side which does not affect our time there at all, as we're just starting to learn. Both times we were there, we were lucky enough to have the place mostly to ourselves and we've been having lots of fun on the auto-belays. Jeff is very personable and laid back, which is really nice, because the last thing I wanted was having someone hovering over me as I ungracefully try to maneuver my way up the colour coded path. We'll continue to learn here and I am looking forward to trying out their summer camp for my daughter soon.

There are two Rock Oasis gyms in the city, one in Toronto and the other in Ajax. The Ajax location…read moreis actually located inside of the Ajax Community Centre. The photo on Google Maps of the entrance isn't actually the one I was able to enter from. If you're facing the entrance where it says "banquet hall" (that's where it'll take you in the nav), walk to the left until you see another set of doors. Once you walk in there's hanging signage that will say "rock climbing". Follow these and you should start seeing signs for "Rock Oasis". Pretty easy from there! There's a little counter where you can take care of your rentals and payment. The staff member that I was greeted by was already expecting me! I had booked online the night before and signed the waiver. In the same hallway there's a set of doors that leads directly into the rock climbing area. There are cubbies to store your gear at the bottom of the stairs. Right by it was a hand sanitizing station although they had some other bottles spread throughout the climbing area on benches. It's a veryyy small climbing area! you can see everything at a glance. The walls also don't get super high which is good for beginners since you won't get as tired going all the way up. There are only 3 auto belays so it gets crowded if you're climbing alone. There is a lot of bouldering available. Since they have limited space, they had to be imaginative with their puzzles. Most of them take the approach of moving horizontally across a wider range of space rather than going up. The bouldering and the top rope walls cross over each other so on a busy day it would be more difficult to maneuver. The bouldering paths are graded by difficulty and they have a colour coding system. I will say that just because they are traversed horizontally doesn't mean that they're easier than the ones at other gyms! It's still a great challenge. Overall the gym is great for the community and located in an accessible place at a reasonable price. However it's very small. If you don't have the place all to yourself, I could find it really hard to get access to the walls you're interested in. You also probably couldn't spend that much time here if you are an experienced climbing.

The harness is available for people who want it (young and old), however you are only able to do some obstacles, as the harnesses can't be on all the walls. This is a completely new facility. You have to sign a waiver when you first climb here. This was my first experience with climbing and I do not have very good upper body strength, however this shouldn't stop you!!! The walls are labeled with levels of difficulty, and you work your way up gradually based on your comfort level. There are shoes available for rent here, as well as locker, and chalk. There is plenty of room to store your personal belongings on shelves. You can also bring your own lock so that you do not have to rent a lock. You are given a quick tour on your first day and also shown how to fall safely. There are thick mats under all the walls, however it is important to follow the falling instructions to prevent injury. As a first time climber, I was nervous at first (because heights aren't my thing) but after a few easy climbs, I really got into it. Expect to be very sore the next day if this is your first time! You will be using muscles you have never used before. I saw people of all ages and skill level. There were even children as young as 7 years of age. There are definitely more challenging walls that even expert climbers will find difficult. I really enjoyed this experience and can't wait to return! Get out there and climb! :)

The fees are a little bit less than at other gyms and I think this is due to the size of it. There are a decent number of top rope and lead climbing routes but only a few auto belays. The bouldering area was very squished due to a wall that separates everything else from it. It just felt like it was hard to walk without tripping over people essentially. They had a lot of projects up that were ungraded on one side of the wall. This was kind of interesting because it kind let you forget about any sort of level restrictions. Some of the grading they did have was interesting - they had had a "V minus"...as in less than 0. I'm not sure how one determines something is easier than a 0. As for some housekeeping, the front has a lot of coat hangers and a bench area for you to put on your shoes. There is a sink in this area too for quick handwashing. There are lockers up a set of stairs. They don't do any walk-in sort of belay training - check for special dates. They had a board up where you could contact other members for a belay partner which was pretty cool. All the staff were friendly too. Seems like a nice gym to be a part of!
