Bistros originated in France, are typically small, intimate, and serve casual French food. Modern bistros don't necessarily need to serve French cuisine. They tend to serve locally inspired dishes that one wouldn't find at a typical fine dining establishment. Originally called the Hitching Post, HP Cafe was Upper Sedona's first diner, opening sometime in the 1940s on a now-busy AZ-89A. Upon arrival as first-timers via the side entrance overlooking a pleasant pedestrian plaza, my partner and I opted to sit al fresco at a high-top table on their patio that came complete with a soothing waterfall and heaters for the cooler months. The inside dining room featured low lights, real wood tables, red cloth napkins, soothing gray walls, and a brightly lit wine cellar illuminating various bottles. Our menu has nice varieties of a typical American breakfast with some Mexican in the mix. We decided on the HP French Toast and Day of Cowboy Hash. The food was authentic, fresh, and so flavorful with the right portions. I had the opportunity to exchange words with the owner, Judy. Bobbi was our server. HP Cafe is a very pleasant, quaint little restaurant. We have been here before and had enjoyed the experience. All of the staff were very friendly and the Breakfast menu does offer a nice variety of options. I decided on the crab cake eggs Benedict and my wife had the Chilaquiles Rancheros. Unfortunately, the crab cakes were a little fishy. I wouldn't order those again. The Chilaquiles were good but on the hot side. They have an interesting little restroom that is not marked and is decorated to match the wall. It was pretty humorous watching the expressions of people looking for the door. The eggs were over cooked with burnt edges even though we were very specific about how we wanted them cooked. Based on her recommendation, I ordered the French Omelet. What I got, however, was an overcooked omelet that did not come close to being a French omelet. Every thing in my plate was tepid, at best. The server acknowledged that it was over done. She chose to serve our meal knowing full well that it wasn't right. She immediately started with the attitude when we expressed our dissatisfaction with the meal. She charged me for my meal, which I didn't eat, but gave us a paltry "discount. " I would not and could not recomend this restaurant. $75 is too much to leave hungry. Brunch here was amazing! I ordered the Chicken & Biscuit, which is essentially biscuits and gravy with a fried chicken breast, topped with a bit of hot honey and their bang-bang sauce. So delicious! Tons of flavor! My wife ordered the fruit board, which had thinly sliced fruits, banana bread and a cup of yogurt. The presentation was incredible. We found this restaurant when it was not too crowded (PERFECT) and by the time we finished eating it was understandably crowded! Their food is GREAT! The service was quick, friendly, and fast. I can tell with this one visit that this is a restaurant that goes above and beyond in the kitchen and for their customers. (Just look tat my photo of the tea set-up, it's the small things that matter)! I ordered the Bourbon Pecan French Toast (Just WOW). I also ordered a side of sausage and one scrambled egg. Because there's no meal, I had to order the sides a la carte which made it pricier but that's just what I wanted! They offer a lot of intriguing options on their menu. As longtime West Sedona locals, we normally avoid the busy Uptown scene. But last Saturday, our usual favorite spot (The Vault) had an hour and 45-minute wait, so we wandered a little further and stumbled into The Hitching Post. To our surprise, it was completely empty, so we took a chance--and I'm so glad we did! Ambience-wise, The Hitching Post is cozy and sophisticated--small but welcoming, with a warm and relaxing atmosphere. They've also got a charming back patio, perfect for a peaceful meal outdoors with views of their beautiful fountain. If you'd rather people-watch along 89A, there's a small front patio too. It all feels very inviting and comfortable, whether you're out for a special date night or just want to unwind with friends. Turns out, The Hitching Post has a new chef: Roberto, the same culinary wizard we fell in love with at The Vault. No one cooks a steak the way this guy does--absolutely perfect, every single time. We started with the cactus dip appetizer, which had a creamy, savory goodness reminiscent of an artichoke dip but made with cactus--such a fun and delicious twist! For entrees, we had the filet mignon, cooked to a perfect medium rare and presented beautifully. I also ordered the bruschetta appetizer (a meal in itself--seriously, don't let "appetizer" fool you!) and a huge, fresh apple blue cheese salad. Everything was so fresh and delicious that I could barely make a dent in my plate. The cocktails deserve a special shoutout: basically happy hour prices all day long! My prickly pear margarita was $7--unheard of in this town--and Maria, the bartender (and our server!), was amazing. She added jalapenos and a tajin rim for a perfect kick. My husband had a palomino exactly the way he wanted it, also just $7. It felt like a hidden gem of a deal. And just when we thought the meal was over, Chef Roberto himself brought out a bubbling skillet filled with fresh-cut bananas and strawberries, what he described as their breakfast French toast turned dessert masterpiece--drenched in dulce de leche, topped with homemade gelato and whipped cream. It was insane in the best way. We're already planning our next dinner visit and bringing friends because people need to know: The Hitching Post now serves dinner Friday-Sunday, and it's spectacular. They're known for their breakfast and lunch (which we went back for--amazing!), but dinner is an absolute must. Plus, they offer a 10% locals discount, which is the cherry on top. I took my family recently for a delicious breakfast on a cool clear, sunny Sunday in early December. This area of Sedona has so many places to try that it was more or less selecting a place at random, but I really feel we won the jackpot with HP Cafe. We sat outside, a table of 4 with our little dog and were greeted by a friendly staff, had a good waitress and hands down a good meal. The staff inside were upbeat, lively and fun for a Sunday morning and I can't help but wish we had a place like this at home. We had an omelet, the chicken biscuit (which could be a meal for 2, if not 3) and a sort of scramble in a skillet that I can't quite remember the name of. All were 100%, A+. There's a side area near the walking alley that would be a great place for a happy hour and the inside was bright and lively - finding the two bathrooms hidden in the walls were absolutely fun and something we all talked/joked about as we had our own experiences going inside one-by-one to discover them on our own. I wish there were more places like HP Cafe. Do yourself a favor and give it a try. I'd love to have come back for dinner if I had more time in the area. read more

This is going to sound very Sedona, but we ended up going here at the last minute because our Pink Jeep tour started much earlier than we thought. My top tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality and I came for brunch last Sunday to get some sustenance before heading down the street for a scenic rim tour in the aforementioned jeeps. The menu looked pretty decent, so we gave it a shot even though it wasn't a restaurant that had come up in any prior research (which in hindsight isn't too surprising). The interior is pretty nondescript but we ended up getting a table in their outdoor area. They unfortunately drew the short straw with the view - unlike many of their counterparts, you have no glimpses of the red canyons; it overlooks a pleasant pedestrian plaza, which in almost any other circumstance you'd call a win. The seating also happens to be right next to a small coffee shop, which produced some pleasant aromas during our meal. I had a hankering for something sweeter and opted for, I believe, the Bourbon Peach French Toast, along with a side of eggs. Unfortunately they didn't have the peaches so I had to sub those out for strawberries but it was still decent. Definitely would have been better with the peaches; a little surprising they'd be out of a key ingredient during Sunday brunch in tourist season, but so it goes. It was a big portion though and I thought the "crust" of it was a unique texture, kind of like when you get those pretzel crusted seafood entrees. Unfortunately their website erroneously has an additional copy of their dinner menu for their breakfast menu (lot of little unforced errors like that) so I can't confirm the exact name. My chum tested out some mimosas on our vacation and this one was the most tepidly received. Honestly? I considered getting one myself but took a pass once we walked by their "bar area." It legitimately looked like the liquor section at a kegger, literally just a bunch of bottles grouped informally on a shelf. Really unprofessional optic and I thought it was a red flag/sign to avoid that section of the menu. Odd too, because by definition anyone who gets seated in the outdoor area or uses the restroom has to walk right by it. Not a good look. Speaking of the restroom, it was basically camouflaged in the wall (no signage or even a noticeable door knob). My chum used it first and the waitress had to guide her over to it. It's one if those things that sounds cool/interesting at first glance, but also totally illogical - every single time a customer needs to use the restroom, they need to be handheld through the location process, which takes up the bandwidth of your staff. It was like looking for a hidden room in Legends of the Hidden Temple. We both agreed that the eggs were the best part of the meal. Very fresh and delicious, and I'm glad I opted for a side of them at the last minute. Also a huge plus? We had a good waitress who stopped by regularly, and was very pleasant. This place has apparently been around for decades, which to me is a pretty big selling point in an area like this, but I think you have a lot of better options with significantly better views (and bathrooms you can locate all by yourself). read more

Walking around Sedona we got hungry... fast. It wasn't quite lunchtime (11:45) so they only had their breakfast menu, but hubs wasn't too disappointed in one of their breakfast sandwiches. I had an omelet and the waitress asked if I'd like homemade salsa for it to which I replied, "Uh, YES." (LOVE me some homemade salsa!) This was some of the best salsa I've had at a restaurant! Their specialty lattes are also something to behold... Hubs got one of those and while there wasn't much alcohol in it and he doesn't really like hot drinks, he enjoyed it. I had the vegetarian one which had some nicely sautéed veggies, avocado, hummus and some cold crunchy stuff on a spinach wrap. 4/28/2023-We opted to go into Uptown Sedona for some light shopping a bite to eat for breakfast after visiting Chapel of Holy Cross. This place is a medium sized location that offers outdoor seating in the front along the Main Street and in the back as of the shopping area. We were immediately seated by a very friendly gentleman. The waiter that served us was very friendly and professional. I decided to try the Red Rock Omlete with Gouda cheese. There was an ample amount of the ingredients, especially the brisket. You won't go away hungry. My friends opted for Smashed Avocado & Hummus Bruschetta and a Southwest Classic Burrito. Everything came out fairly quickly and was very well seasoned and good portion sizes. My friends also ordered the mango mimosas, which they said only had a light hint of mango flavor...but everything overall was good. All the staff that we interacted with were friendly. 4/29/2023-We came back to this establishment again for an early morning breakfast since we had booked an early Jeep tour and they were to only place that we found that was open as early as 7:00 AM. Terri was our server and we were able to sit on the back patio. This time I opted for the piggy omelet that had bacon, sausage & ham. Cute, intimate place to eat. My mom and I stopped in for breakfast, late Saturday morning. The place was busy, but we lucked out and were seated right away. I ordered a vanilla latte, which was delicious! Great espresso taste, subtle vanilla, and lots of froth! I got the Chilaquiles Rancheros and my mom had the parfait. I wish my dish had more salsa and less tortilla chips, but the eggs were cooked perfectly (over easily). The parfait was tasty, but difficult to eat out of such a narrow vessel. Service was spot on. Located on Route 89A in Uptown Sedona, HP Cafe is a solid choice for breakfast, lunch, or dinner - featuring a casual ambiance, excellent service, and well executed and innovative dishes. We recently stopped in for an early lunch on our last day in Sedona. We had arrived at 1125am, just before the kitchen turned over from breakfast to lunch, but the hostess was willing to accommodate us and provided us with the lunch menus. I opted for the Brisket Po Boy with tender brisket smothered in sweet bbq sauce, shredded iceberg lettuce, and sliced tomato and red onion on a soft hero roll with a side of the crispy twice dipped fries. Very tasty and the portion was satisfying without being overly filling. My dining companion opted for the Smoked Salmon Cobb Salad prepared with fresh ingredients, which she thought was great in concept but served with a little too much citrus dressing and drowned out the other flavors in the salad.
