So it's February. And until last week Lake Erie was perhaps 15% covered in ice. But, given this…read morepast week of deep cold, we are up to around 80%. So maybe the ice fishermen will get to have more fishing afterall. We have another week of cold coming, which should give the ice a chance to really take hold. I've had an obsession with Lake Erie since the first time I set eyes on her a few decades ago, yes…read morewe've shared some memories that will last a life time. I lived not so far from her shores for a number of years so I've experienced her in all seasons and I say with certainty no particular one is my favorite since each are unique and all are special in some sense. My most recent visit from the shores of Buffalo in February is one of frozen sheets of ice jammed against the shore appearing lifeless and stranded, barren and eerie waiting in utter silence for the warmth of spring to thaw her surface and return the beauty she exhibits so beautifully. I've eaten a Tony Packo Dog on her shores in Toledo and skipped stones across the breaking waves near Edgewater Park outside Cleveland. This lake has provided so much to so many. I've drank wine and eaten hors d'oeuvre on a catamaran at sunset a mile or two from downtown Cleveland and ventured out before daylight from Geneva-on-the-Lake twenty five miles from Canada to catch a limit of walleye from a fishing charter. I've walked her frozen shores in Mentor as the ice shelves heaved onto the shore etching the sand while reshaping the shoreline and experienced the endless lake effect snows that buries the town of Chardon in late November, then camped on the shores at Presque Isle in the spring where you could see a lake perch grab your bait nearly thirty feet below the surface. The water that provides all the joy to so many while traveling over Niagara Falls into Lake Ontario never grows old, it's a very tranquil view no matter which shore you look over her...

A great place to go and rock climb while enjoying what nature has to offer. Over the years, there…read morehas been significantly more foot traffic, and as a result, more noise pollution and waste items have been popping up. I think that with more focus on an "all things in, all things out" approach, this area would be better for both bouldering enthusiast in addition nature fanatics alike!

Another vacation win- they have something here I have never seen- a nature trading post! You can…read moretrade rocks, crystals, fossils and such for their inventory or participate in a point based scavenger hunt, taking photos throughout the park, and redeem points for something in their inventory. I ma a huge rock hound, crystal nut- not just because my name is Crystal, I've loved picking up shiny rocks since I was a small child. Quartz and mica are two I remember finding often as a child. Here- they had a huge inventory of various raw and polished stones, fossils, animal bones and such. And that was just in the Nature Exchange! The park is wonderful too, plenty of trails to lead you down by the river, wonderful trees, great overlook viewpoints throughout. As part of the Niagra Parks system, they have bike trails too. We stopped here twice, once to explore and once for me to pop back in with my photos and pick out a raw piece of turquoise! A birthday win for me! Shout out to the young lady who talked to me in the morning, she wasn't there when I returned- and I am pretty sure the 2 young men thought I was crazy (I am), but they were all very helpful for this big kid out playing in nature!
