This review is for the Hoypoloi located in Chicago O'Hare (ORD). I always enjoy finding unique stores like this one in airports. Not only does browsing through them help pass the time during long layovers and delays, but one can sometimes find unique gifts in shops like this one, or a souvenir which will remind you of the city you purchased it in, but it's unique and not the stereotypical hats, t-shirts or mugs with the name of the city emblazoned on them. Hoypoloi offers lots of different artwork and items for sale, from photos and paintings to sculptures and even action figures and puzzles. Being that it's art and is created/designed by different individuals, some items are priced more reasonably than others. We liked the little 3D wooden puzzle sculptures they had here, where you'd buy an envelope that contained a few laser cut pieces of flat wood. You pop the cut pieces out of the larger sheet and assemble them according to the instructions. Once put together, you have a several inch high and wide 3D sculpture, suitable for displaying in your home. Priced at $12 I thought they were reasonable, though I was a bit disappointed as they were out of the one we really wanted, yet still had the completed puzzle on display. read more

In the middle of a hectic trip and grumpy travel mates, I found Hoypoloi, in Terminal 2 right across from my gate. This was exactly what I needed. The music is what drew me in...then the smiles from the staff was perfect. I spent almost an entire hour there just taking it all in, so much to see and everything so beautifully presented. I was to say the least 'awestruck'. I purchased a few items and was grateful for the non pushy staff. They were there and alert to answer any questions and always made sure i was given some information on anything i expressed interest in. What a pleasure. They also offer SHIPPING! That is what made it even more of a perfect experience. I was told shipping usually takes between 2-2.5 weeks but they could get it there earlier if needed. Perfect perfect AGAIN. I was about to rate it a one-star. Considering the unique, handmade art collections in there, however, I would give it one more, but WOW THE SERVICE... is absurd. There is a lady at the front desk whose name is Samantha (if I remembered correctly from the name tag that I saw). She just seemed really annoyed to answer my questions and during checkout - never smiled, looked into my eyes or remotely pretended to listen to my questions. I feel like it is either that she was having a really bad day or that the owner or the manager did not treat his/her employees too well (well, that's not my place to say, but having some experience in customer service, I can kind of tell.) I ended up not buying anything because my mood was ruined by the service. Fortunately, another friendlier staff at the time redeemed it by showing some basic service etiquette - welcoming me in and sending me off with a friendly smile and seemingly sincerely willing to help. I will definitely come back for the amazing collection of handmade artworks only if the staff is friendlier. read more

I stopped by this O'hare gift shop 40 minutes before my flight took off. Beautiful ornamental leaves that were dipped and persevered in a delicate metal overlay were displayed at the entrance (www.theroselady.com). I picked out a few to purchase as gifts and saw that there was no cashier to be found in sight. I waited 5 minutes then left to find my gate. Still having time before boarding I went back 15 minutes later and found the cashier. I brought up 4 delicate leaves and then watched her try to cram them in a box bending the edges. The leaves chosen were not going to fit without damaging them so I asked her to stop and see if she had tissue or larger boxes. I apparently was asking too much because she rolled her eyes and made a face. I told her I had 3 flights to catch and wanted to make sure they didn't get damaged as my carry on. She offered to just put them in a bag. I asked if they could still be wrapped in something because this was a art gallery-type store and I didn't want them damaged. She pulled out a rumpled jagged piece of bubble wrap and continued to them lay all the leaves bunched together and rolled them up. Seriously- Again, I told her that I didn't want them damaged- they are leaves! And again she gave me an eye roll with attitude asked me how I wanted hem wrapped. I asked for them to be wrapped individually since they were gifts and I had several flights to still take. She cut small squares out of the bubble wrap and started taping them. The whole leaf wasn't covered at all and the corners were sticking out. Seriously. She had such an bitchy attitude and was doing such a horrible job I couldn't believe it. As I watched her mangle the 3rd leaf I told her that I changed my mind and simply left. She clearly was unable to process how to wrap a delicate piece of art that I'm sure explaining it to her a 4th time was not going to benefit anyone. Hoypoloi Gallery you hired an awful employee who has the grey/white curly extensions and a bad lower back tattoo that I got to see because she didn't wear appropriate clothing. Your shop did a disservice by hiring her and lost out on a $100+ impulse sale because of her crappy customer service. read more

There are some really unique items here. Lots to look at! I love the paintings and trinkets. The people working the shop are just genuinely pleasant and kind. I want to shout out to Sam, who I met today. She is just really sweet. I didn't buy today, but I have my eye on a few things. I love that they will ship for you. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because I think that many of the items are a bit pricey. With that said, I will be traveling through here quite a bit. Really nice things in this store. The service, though, is terrible. I wanted info on a painting: price, artist, the basics. She knew what the price was on the paintings around it but not the one I was interested in. She looked at me and asked if I wanted to know the price of the one I was interested in. Basically, she didn't want to climb up on a ladder to figure it out. At my insistence, she did. I asked if she had a card or some info on the artists. She looked for it and then said the only thing she could do that was to print something out. I was staring at the printer. She didn't want to click print. So I asked if she could at least write the name of the artist on a piece of paper. She couldn't do that either because she couldn't pronounce his name. I was clearly an interested buyer and could have been persuaded to purchase the $450 painting without much nudging. The sales person though couldn't be bothered. She thought that I could look on their website but said that the painting may or may not be there. However, she did say that I could inquire about the painting by looking for the email address on the website then sending an email. No offer to write down the email address for me. She was NO help at all. None. Zip. Nada. The only reason I gave the store two stars is because there are some really nice pieces in it. read more

Great artisan place at the airport. Reminds me of I Love Chicago in terminal 5 but with less focus on customer service. I flew out of terminal 2 with a long wait so I decided to go and look at some shops and dropped in to look at the shop. Great pieces of art! Disappointed with a staff there,,, I think her name is Samantha, from what I heard, while she was assisting someone who was obviously her friend or client. She was only interested in making this one customer happy and not attentive to anyone else in the store! I asked her for help several times but was ignored several times!! VERY RUDE AND VERY UNATTRACTIVE for a gallery!! She looks like she hasn't slept or showered for days!!! I hope someone in management reads this and does something to this person! NOT PLEASANT!! For a so called gallery please look for people who are actually better looking and attentive!! I remember a wonderful guy named Ben who assisted me at the smaller gallery in terminal 1, and he was dapper, even in black! read more

I purchased some glass trinkets last Thursday on my way from ORD to JFK. When getting to NY, I opened the box and to my surprise it was completely empty! When thinking back, I remember there being a box on the counter besides the one Sana (the sales clerk name was on the receipt, very helpful) was putting my glass figurines into. It turns out, I was accidentally handed the wrong box, not realizing until it was too late. Also, the fact that the box had none of that cotton in it that the items were placed was a clear sign that this wasn't my box. When I finally got back to O'Hare early Monday morning, I went back to the store to see if I could get some answers. Unfortunately the nice gentleman who was there at the time couldn't figure out where my box would be and called his manager to see is he could shed some light on the situation. The manager apologized for the trouble and said could pick out new figurines. Unfortunately, the ones I had picked out were unique so I declined his offer and asked in Sana, the initial sales clerk could touch base with me when she gets in. When calling back the next day I spoke with another associate names Michael who was determined to make things right. He emailed Sana (outside of her normal work hours) to find out she had saved my box by putting in their safe. He then made sure to have the box mailed to my home, as I wasn't planning on going back to O'Hare airport in the near future. I truly appreciate how amazing the customer service has been throughout this whole experience. Especially since the cost of shipping the items certainly surpassed their actual value. I have a small collection of the items purchased and was so excited my husband spotted them in the first place (I've had trouble finding then for the past couple years.) Thank you Michael for going above and beyond for me. The happiness that these tiny glass animals give me cannot be put into words. My husband can attest to that. read more
