If my cat could type this review, he'd have so many amazing things to say. Since his typing skills are sub par, and his spelling is terrible, I'm going to submit it for him. I've bought scratchers and toys from here, and they are always a hit. I have to monitor yarn barn time, because he loves it so much he wants to destroy it. I also got him a little squeaky mouse, and it's his favorite toy. I know they sell these toys at most pet supply stores, but none of them offer the friendly neighborhood charm of Howl. They also have two adorable shop kitties, Buck and Birdy, who can usually be found sleeping in the cat room. Howl offers some pretty awesome services as well. From nail clipping on Saturdays to a dog wash station every day. You can't go wrong when you shop local, and if you love your pets, this is the place to go! read more

I don't know if it's luck of the draw with the staff here, but most of my visits have involved unhelpful staff, with exception of one nice young woman who was friendly and offered to carry a large bag of dog food to my car. I went there a few weeks ago in the evening. They didn't have my dog's food in a large bag. I went up to the register, where I felt as if I was interrupting a conversation between the salespeople. I asked if they had a large bag of Innova senior. A woman, who may have been the owner, said "no" and then continued to chat with her coworkers about "how amazed she was that they sold the few bags they had in stock so quickly." I wasn't offered a phone call upon getting another shipment, nothing. I won't be returning to Howl only to spend $50 on a bag of dog food to get inattentive service. It's a great store and not only offers wonderful selection of products for your dog AND CAT, but also goes the extra distance and offers services and activities that further educate and bring together pet owners like pet adoption and pet psychics. I'd definitely recommend to locals and a stop by if you're anywhere near the area. Stopped in today on a Thursday. First thing when I walk in is I see a cat named Mitch come trotting up to the door. I figure he just wants a smell, but he's one of the friendliest cats I've ever met and not only can he not get enough head scratching and attention, but he keeps following me around the store hopping up on tables and the like trying to get my attention to pet him again. I swear he's a dog in a cats body. = ) I saw another cat doing the regular thing of snoozing in a basket on the window sill. It gave me one look and then went back to snoozing. And cat products are definitely not left out of this store's focus. They probably have the biggest selection of premium cat food and products that I've ever seen. So if you're a cat lover, this place should be numero uno on your list. OK besides the great stuff for cats, the selection of dog products they carry is also quite impressive. Let's start with food. They have many premium brands of dog and cat food. My fave, honest kitchen embark which they stock at $78. That's pretty reasonable for the big box. they also carry Merrick BG, Orijen, California something, and others that I can't remember. Very impressive, especially considering you're in Baltimore. They also have a good selection of toys to choose from. One of the best features is that they have a great room in the middle of the store that features some pet art and I guess is where they have pet adoptions and in store events. Really was impressed by that since I think it separates the best pet stores from great pet stores.. I was immediately greeted by the store owner and after she made sure I didn't need much from her returned to her conversation with the two other guys I think that are employees. Parking is adequate with free spots on the street in front and a free parking lot in the back. Prices are not always marked. It's a pet peeve of mine and bugs me. Their store is expansive, but darker than I'd like. Felt kind of cave like toward the rear half of the store. Not to nit-pick, but I like it best when a store owner engages me in discussion to find out more about me and my pet. The employee who greeted me was nice enough, but didn't do this. I'm not gonna hold that against them since it's my first and probably only time I'll visit, but that could be something they do better. read more

The pet boutique thing has been around for a bit now, and we all know of one or two flash-in-the-pans that sprung up to sell you an overpriced poo bag dispenser, or the next trendy dog food. Howl is not, nor has ever been, that place. This is a spot that first and foremost has wonderful and knowledgeable salespeople. I really can't say enough about the staff - if you have questions, they have answers. You will be treated with courtesy and respect as a customer, I promise. The selection is very good, but not overwhelming. They stock the good stuff, so what they have can be counted on t be the best thing they've found. This goes for the whole slew from shampoos to treats. Have a question about what may be a good option for your pet, see above. Prices are reasonable, and the pet wash is a great option. I actually have to agree with Nancy L. I used to go here to buy Orijen dog food for my pup, but the staff is pretty much useless. I have actually had to ask the people at the counter to move their things so I could put a 30 pound bag of dog food down, and then once I did, had to stand there before finally asking THEM if they would ring me up so I could leave. It surprised me that a store that is charging the prices they are would have staff that doesn't seem to care that anyone is buying anything. read more

I started going to Howl about two years ago, when the vet recommended my cat eat Verus canned food and I couldn't find it anywhere. Flash forward and I've found it a few more places, but nowhere else as cheap as Howl. That includes online. (The cat still hardly eats anything else). Beyond their being one of the few stores that has my cat's food in stock, they have a really great selection for a small pet store and prices that are closer to big box stores than the other boutique pet stores in the area. I also like the fact that they have a parking lot someone usually offers to help me bring my purchase to the car. Staff have always been helpful and willing to answer questions for me (they recently helped me ID another brand that averted a kitty hunger strike when there was a Verus shortage). I do agree that checkout can sometimes be slow, but I haven't had any of the major problems other people have mentioned. All around they're the best pet store I've come across in Baltimore, and I plan to keep coming back. read more

I love this store! I moved from San Francisco and was worrying about where I was going to find the raw food I spoil my dog with. Never fear! Howl has everything I need. They have a variety of brands of frozen raw food (as well as wet and dry food too). They didn't carry what he usually ate but offered to special order it and recommended a local brand that I switched him to and he likes just as well. The staff is super friendly and they love my dog when he comes in even though he's a small terror. They offer a lot of natural options for toys, flea treatments, shampoo and whatever else you need, which I really love. They also sometimes show free movies in their back parking lot with food for sale that benefit various local causes and organizations. read more

after a long time with a stinky dog, i decided to wash my dog. Georgia is my shop dog and commuting companion, the four blocks we commute every day is exhausting. So to beat the heat we went for a dip in the wash area at Howl. I love washing her at home but with the wash area being elevated and with towels right there it was great. She got clipped in and i hosed her reluctant self down, shampoo wash, rinse and then a great rinse conditioner and now i have a good smelling dog . When we left i let her pick out something for a treat and walked back down to the studio. A whole 30 minutes later. What a deal.... read more

I work in Hampden. I lived there for five years. I love to shop local and support the small business! I stopped by Howl today to pick up some chow for my furry loved ones, usually when I go in the service is wonderful! I love talking to the owner, she is fantastic! However when I went to check out today the woman who rung me up was quite surly and rude. Brown hair facial piercings. My co-worker informed me she had a similar experience with the same woman. Conveniently located with free parking in the city! WooHoo!!! I had been to the store prior for toys, shampoo and miscellaneous items, but last year had to switch my dog to a better diet due to her sensitive digestive system. Not only did they help me and explain the differences in the various brands offered, they also gave me samples to bring home first to see if my dog liked them. Since then, I am a regular and have recommended Howl to several people. I buy the Verus Lamb and Brown Rice and have noticed that my dog does not have the digestive issues that we were encountering before the switch to a quality food. They even offer grain free diets. I have visited howl on a few occasions and continue to return only because of the accessibility. While I feel some of their prices are reasonable this is limited to a select list of items. My most recent visit I stood at the counter for 10 minutes before I sales person even addressed me then it was a quick smart "Can I help you." Being I had a dog with me and I was waiting in a pet store I thought it was pretty obvious I needed help. When I inquired about the product the sales clerk gave off the impression that it was a ridiculous question. Being I don't own or work in a pet store I don't know everything there is to know about pet products. I just feel that while their store is a nice idea for the area, the idea is nicer then the reality. It would be nice if they would get a friendlier staff that was more interested in being helpful than the conversations they are holding. read more

My experience has been similar to other users that were ignored by the owner and her friends chatting around the cash register. I bought food from the original location years ago for my cat that had some feeding issues. She ordered it by the case for me until moving to the current location. I bought all my pet supplies there for a while since I try to reward businesses that treat me right, but she was gradually less willing to order food, even when I offered to pay up front. It seems like her niche market has changed from specializing in food to something else and she's just not interested business outside whatever her niche is. She kept saying she'd order the food, but wouldn't. More and more, I found myself having to buy it from a shop that was wiling to order it. The last straw was when I wasn't charged for an item and I went back with my receipt to pay for it. The owner's mob of snotty friends literally ridiculed me for coming back to pay for something I wasn't charged for. My pet loves the food sold here; however, i would not recommend that a person visit the store unless they're ready to risk being ignored, belittled, or judged by a few employees there who are sanctimonious in their views on pet care. Unsolicited opinion on my life from a stranger selling dog bones or chew toys doesn't really improve my day. I agree with the earlier comments from Susan and Nancy that patrons are an intrusion on the more zealous pet owners, who seem to frequent the checkout counter like a popular bar. I've visited several times, for my animal's sake. Some staff are probably much more skillful than others. I'm sure I've not encountered them all. But some seem confused as to the difference between "animal" and "human being," and aren't really the best people to be charged with interacting with human customers. read more

Howl is a great neighborhood pet store. They have a good selection of natural and organic pet foods and supplies. The bag club and frequent flier club are nice perks too. The free parking lot makes the trip hassle-free. There are two reasons why I did not give Howl five stars: The first reason is the groomer. She is very difficult to reach, does not return phone calls, and refuses to groom certain breeds. I take my grooming business elsewhere. The second reason is that owner accepted an expensive framed photograph from my husband to hang on the wall with the other local artwork, and it was never displayed. We'd love to get that piece back if they are not going to use it. read more

The VERY best pet store in town! Locally owned, staffed by kind and knowledgeable people, who get to know their customers and our fur babies, and help us care for them. They have a great selection of food, toys, treats- everything you need. I love going there, and am happy to support them. In fact, just tonight, I got there after they closed, and have no food at home....the very helpful employee sent me home with samples, so that Daisy and Camden will have dinner tonight. This is a great store with a great dedicated staff. The pet food selection is tops, as they do not have any foods that have fillers and poor quality ingredients. They were very helpful when I was having trouble with my very termperamental, sickly dog and are the kind of people who greet you (and your pet) by name. Although the supply of dog beds is limited and somewhat expensive... the huge array of healthy training treats is excellent. What's more, the resident dog obedience classes, by Bmore Charming (Lauren Bond and staff) are excellent. We have worked with them in group classes and individually and found them to be super helpful and resourceful in helping us with our very significant behavior and temperament issues. read more

My dog was suffering from an allergic reaction and they suggested it may be a food allergy so I switched my dog to a fish based food they recommended---it worked! The staff at Howl go above and beyond when it comes to how they regard animals. When our dog found an abandoned kitten in our shrubs, we took it to Howl for advice. They actually took the time to give us directions on how to raise it at that precarious stage. They also gave us phone numbers and directions of where we could drop off the kitten for others that had the time to feed and care for a kitten so young. Because of them an abandoned kitten wound up finding a home when we took it to one of the places that they recommended. Even when not saving kittens they always have treated us as valued customers no matter how small or large the purchase. Their lamb sausage treats for a dollar are quite coveted by our two dogs. I highly recommend this establishment as they dole out advice just as naturally as they process sales. I LOVE HOWL! So does the cutest dog ever, which happens to be my dog (haha) Olivia. Everyone is friendly, and they have a good variety of everything. in fact, I am always pissed when I spend $100 at petsmart, because Olivia always appreciates the $100 I spend at Howl much more. She enjoys the better quality treats and toys. I like the atmosphere, it is dead smack between my work and my home. The employees that work there that I usually see are always very helpful even with stuff they don't carry and maybe where to find it. But one employee with salt and pepper hair, older like 60, he seems to ALWAYS have an attitude with every question. And he looks as if you ruined his day completely by asking a question. I advise ignoring him and don't ask him any questions when your there if you want a pleasant experience. Our yellow lab needed to be groomed so we decided to call Tammy at Howl in baltimore and make an appointment for him. Not only did she do a great job with him, so professional and curtious. I have been to Howl several times and I agree with other posts to a degree. The staff does not go out of their way to welcome you or to respond to you but they are full of knowledge about the animals and they have no problem looking things up for you. I like to support local businesses and am glad that I can give my business to Howl. Nice folks and quality products and advice. I buy food for my two dogs there and also receive donations and discounts from Robin, the owner, for food for my feral cat colony which is most welcome since feeding the kitties and taking care of their spaying/neutering and medical needs can get quite expensive (just spend $800 on UTI and tail amputation for one of my colony) . Because I love this store and have always had great experiences there, I was surprised to see any lower-than-5-star ratings (maybe there was a bad apple at some point). I've been a customer for two years, and * every staffer I've encountered has been friendly (one person strikes me as baseline cordial rather than warm, but that might be just my opinion or just our chemistry -- and the important thing is, s/he is polite and helpful); * most people who work there know A LOT about the products and about animal health, and those who know less will hand you off to someone more knowledgeable; * the employees go out of their way to find a solution that will fit your budget and help your ailing companion (one even sent me additional information); * the store can and does order special items as requested; * I've never found an unmarked item; * the store is well-stocked, tidy, and clean; and * the specialty food I buy is *cheaper* at Howl than at one of the chains (I'm on a tight budget, so I have priced stuff elsewhere), and other items are comparably priced. And, even with my tight budget, I'd rather pay an extra 3 percent if that means supporting a neighborhood business, especially such an excellent one. I work around the corner from howl and am there weekly for my 3 furry babies. They are so nice there and carry exactly what my babies need and want. I only want the best for my kitties and they have it. Not to mention honestly there prices are very reasonable.
