I came to Dr. shaw as an urgent last min patient due a newly discovered ovarian cyst that needed to come out immediately. He was knowledgeable, professional, kind and most of all sensitive to my fears/anxieties of the situation. He referred me to a surgeon he trusted, who did an 11/10 job. My husband and I met Dr. Shaw during Covid when we were pregnant with our first daughter. We knew immediately he was who we wanted to deliver her. He was very warm and encouraging during a very uneasy time...and even though we moved 20 miles outside of the city a year ago..there was no doubt we wanted him to deliver our second. He was responsive not only to me but to my boyfriend at all times (day,night, weekend) and got me through not only the best but also one of the most physically challenging parts of my life. I don't normally write reviews but I need to say how much I loved Dr. Shaw and Claudia throughout my pregnancy! For my first pregnancy (and finding out I was having twins!), Claudia made herself available to me anytime I had questions or concerns by giving me her personal number. Not only did she make me feel so comfortable each time I came into the office, she would reach out to see how I was feeling, doing, and if I needed anything as well (you don't get that kind of service anywhere anymore!). Unfortunately, I went alone each time to see how my babies were growing, but Dr. Shaw and Claudia made me feel special to have such a blessing. I had my twins 4 weeks early and Dr. Shaw and Claudia both came to visit the babies and I in the hospital. They also consistently asked how the twins were progressing while in the NICU! For anyone looking for a fantastic OB, I highly recommend Dr. Shaw! His great personality and medical knowledge eased my anxiety over the nine months. A side from this, all sonogram technicians I had (especially Olga and Tamara) were amazing at showing me my little munchkins each time. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Shaw. He's an awesome Ob Gyn and he also saved our lives! He delivered all 3 of my daughters; now twin 8yr olds and a 6yr old. I'm forever grateful to him since both deliveries were emergencies but the second was particularly special since he stood up to the hospital administration and went against hospital policy on my behalf to allow me to be admitted. It ended up saving our lives! I was single and living in the city when I first started going to him over a decade ago. And then married and pregnant, I made the fortuitous decision to keep him as my doctor thru both pregnancies even though I was now in the Hudson Valley; over an hour away. A few months into my second pregnancy, he suspected that I had a placenta accreta; a serious and potentially fatal condition that's difficult to diagnose and occurs when blood vessels and other parts of the placenta grow too deep into the uterine wall. There's no way to know for certain until the delivery but, he knew that if I had it, I would likely hemorrhage so we were nervous that I could deliver early. At the start of my 8th month, he was worried about my safety and felt I was too far from Lenox Hill so he wanted me to have a C-section. The test to check the baby's lungs came back negative. Dr. Shaw called to give me the news and ALSO to say that he wanted me admitted that day anyway since he wanted to monitor me. It was a Thursday. My C-section would be rescheduled for the following Tuesday. What I didn't know at that time was that a year earlier, a NYC woman and her baby died from a placenta accreta en route to a hospital. He told me later that story weighed heavily on him throughout my pregnancy. He felt I was too far from a good hospital; even a 20-minute drive could be too far if I was hemorrhaging. What I also didn't know was that it was against hospital policy to admit someone that early just to be 'monitored' before a surgery. I found out later that, for that ENTIRE day leading up to my arrival at the hospital, Dr. Shaw had argued with the chief of staff to allow me to be admitted and he didn't give up. Even when I arrived at the hospital later that day, the issue had not been resolved but Dr. Shaw never mentioned anything about it. He was just glad to see me there. 12 HOURS LATER at 7am, a nurse woke me to take my temperature and asked how I was feeling. When she left, I got up to go to the bathroom. That's when I began hemorrhaging. It was as if someone turned on the faucet in the tub on full blast! It was so scary. In a matter of seconds there was a swarm of nurses around me who jumped into action. It felt like controlled chaos; it was so surreal - they were all moving so fast but each one was doing something to prep me for surgery. And through it all there was one nurse right next to me who kept reassuring me that everything would be okay. I will forever be grateful to that team of nurses who saved our lives too. They were truly rock stars! Then they wheeled me into the OR and I'll never forget when Dr. Shaw got there. I heard a few expletives that I didn't get the meaning of at the time. I definitely remember him saying - "Can you believe he didn't want her admitted." He was so mad! My beautiful girl, Leona Mary, was born that day. We stayed in the hospital for 5 days. Every day, there were so many people from the hospital staff - doctors, nurses, et al - who would come into my room just to congratulate me and reiterate the gravity of what happened to me. Every one of them told me how lucky I was, what an amazing doctor Dr. Shaw is, how unprecedented it was for him to fight for me to be admitted and what a miracle WE were! Apparently, even in that short amount of time, I had lost so much blood that they assured me neither me nor my baby would have survived had we been at home and had to take an ambulance to a local hospital. He fought so hard for me because he was fearful that something terrible would happen and it did. And he really did save our lives. I can't say enough good things about him. Besides being a good and smart doctor who trusts his instincts, he's just a really good, kind and personable man. He would tell you that he was just doing his job and trusting his gut but I know he went ABOVE AND BEYOND. My husband and I will be forever and ever grateful to him for trusting his instincts and not giving up. He also delivered my twin girls just 2 years earlier. I don't want to imagine what my family's life would be like if we had died that day. 'Thank you' just doesn't seem like enough. He's a good man and a good doctor. I don't write a lot of reviews but I feel a need to review Dr Shaw. On my very first visit, Dr Shaw gave me his personal cell phone number and encouraged me to text him with my concerns. I texted a few times during the course of my pregnancy and never waited longer than 10 minutes for a response... even at 5am! I had a relatively uncomplicated pregnancy and expected and was planning for a vaginal childbirth. I was dismayed when Dr Shaw suggested induction when my baby was a mere 2 days late. Dr Shaw took the time to listen to my concerns and answer all my questions, and explained his rationale for why he thought I should be induced. He thought I was at risk of preeclampsia and also, he wanted to make sure that he would be there personally to attend to my delivery as he viewed me as at-risk. After this conversation I ended up going ahead with the induction and thank god I did! Dr Shaw's instincts were right on the money because a few days after I had my baby, my blood pressure spiked. I would describe Dr Shaw as extremely knowledgeable and experienced. He clearly cares about his patients and their babies. I would use him as my OB again and recommend him unequivocally, particularly for high-risk patients. read more

Dr. Shaw is absolutely wonderful! Claudia, the sono technicians and the front desk team have helped me and my fiancé every step of the way through our pregnancy up to delivery! I have only good things to say about Dr. Shaw and the team, they are all so helpful and have been absolutely fantastic. My fiancé and I had had a few miscarriages unfortunately before Dr Shaw brought our beautiful rainbow baby boy into the world. We were a little nervous going to the doctor for our first sonogram because of this and because of our previous experiences with other doctors. We were so afraid that we were going to end up hearing bad news again. Dr. Shaw, Claudia and all of the staff were extremely caring and attentive and personable. Claudia is fantastic at remembering who you are, you're not just a chart to her We had a few different sonogram technician but they were all fantastic and made sure that you had the perfect picture that you wanted to take home with you before you left. Dr. Shaw is amazing with his matter-of-fact personality but at the same time he is open to hearing all of the " crazy and silly questions that you might have to ask and giving you his very honest opinion but at the same time respecting your choices and thoughts. Yesterday was my annual appointment with Dr Shaw. He has been my OBY/GYN for almost 20 years now. He delivered both my children via c-section and has always been available in between yearly visits when needed. What I like most about Dr Shaw is the time he takes to listen to concerns and the network of others outside of his area. For example he recommended Rosetta Radiology for my mammograms when that was needed and their service is excellent. Dr Shaw continues to provide personal and high quality care during a time when the healthcare system leaves a lot to be desired. I'm grateful to have a doctor where it doesn't take months to get an appointment and I leave feeling like I had enough time to ask my questions and get answers I understand. Howard Shaw, MD is a wonderful MD but I do NOT recommend this doctor if you're pregnant! When you call the office there is a wait to speak to a representative for about 10-15min even when you say you have a 101.3 fever and are concerned about the baby (they still put me on hold). I tried to reach the doctor in the evening, no answer! He never called me back and I was very sick I ended up in the emergency room at Lenox Hill and they recommended changing doctors and filing a complaint. I realized many other women have lawsuits against this place due to lack of treatment, care, malpractice etc! I do NOT recommend this place. Doctors/patient relationships these days are not so much trusted confidences you build through the years but musical chairs-like exchanges that switch at the whim of insurance plan compatibility. Having gone through the normal variation of jobs in my 20s and 30s and therefore been forced to work through a long string of doctors, I've experienced my share of medical appointment horror stories. My visit to Dr. Shaw's office was a rare positive experience. I arrived on time for my check-up and was met by a friendly, professional, and competent staff. The waiting room was cozy and tidy; not the institutional holding pens you often find. After filling out the new patient paperwork, my wait time was minimal and once in the observation room I was attended to quickly instead of being left alone for minutes on end. The doctor was available immediately after my check-up for a post-examination chat. He was personable and funny and did a good job of relating to me and putting me at ease. He treated me like a real person, not a number on a chart, and I feel he touched upon all the relevant health points appropriate to my personal situation; I didn't need to ask him questions or remind him of anything, he was just that professional! I hope my current health insurance plan will last forever so that I can continue to see Dr. Shaw. I will pay him and his staff the ultimate compliment: if my health plan should happen to change, I would consider seeing Dr. Shaw out of pocket: that is how positive my experience was. As one other review says in Google reviews, the appointment felt "rushed and insensitive". Now let me elaborate a little. I went for an annual check up. Dr. Shaw is affiliated with the clinic I went for my first pregnancy with. So that was already a plus. Now cons: Wait time was 50 min though I was 10 min early and they had all my paperwork already. In the exam room I had to sit for another 10 min, in a pretty chilled room, listening to dramatic exclamations by (as turned out later) doctor himself, ranting about something stressful to his nurse next door. Once arrived, doctor very nonchalantly to the extent of not-caring took a pep-smear, and left a room with words "Meet me in my office" without ANY direction where his office was in that labyrinth of rooms. Once in the office, it felt he dismissed my concerns and questions with annoyance and rush with phrases like "It has nothing to do with my specialty" (complaints about changed muscular feelings in general stomach area and more), "You will be fine" (concerns about future possible pregnancies). Instead he was very focused in taking my social history. Where I'm from (no medical concerns by inheritance, etc.), what I do, where my city of birth is on the map. I was clearly not interested in the small talk and had questions regarding my health. To me saying "I need to ask these questions" he said "Yes, you feel you need to ask something". Overall very unpleasant experience. Funny thing was that when I was airing to girlfriends about the visit, one of them said she had a very similar impression with the doctor during her first pregnancy so that she switched practice (3 months into). It turned out to be THE SAME DOCTOR! So not only I felt validated with my disappointment, I felt obliged to post a 1-star review. Hope it helps to someone to weigh their choice read more

Dr. Shaw is the best! He has been my physician for the last year and delivered my first baby in August. Throughout my entire pregnancy Dr. Shaw was a true partner. He is a great listener and will tell you his professional opinion but will not try and dissuade you if you've made up your mind about something-he is on your side(he will always prioritize your safety and the safety of your child though-which is 100% what you want!). My husband and I consider him to be a friend and will absolutely go back to him as we continue to have more children. I also have to mention that his staff is great-particularly Claudia. She is someone who really takes care of patients and I felt like she was an old friend. Now that my daughter is 7 weeks old-I actually miss my doctors appointments. I went to see Doctor Howard Shaw after learning I was pregnant. I was referred to him by my gynecologist. I had mixed feelings prior to my visit as the reviews online were both positive and negative, but I decided to give it a shot as he came highly recommended by my doctor. It was quick and easy to make an appointment and the receptionist was nice. A few weeks later I went in. I was first greeted by a receptionist who seemed to not want to be there (I will talk about the front desk staff later on). After checking in, I was directed to the waiting room. When they tell you that first impressions are important, it is very true! This office is in desperate need of an update. Everything from the sofas, the AC units, to the lighting and paint on the walls needs to be redone. I believe that a physician's office should be squeaky clean, but unfortunately that's not the case here. Everything is dirty, broken, dusty and worn out. They do not seem to care about appearances and I find this pretty sad. After waiting about 5 minutes, I was called by a nurse (Claudia) who asked me to follow her to an exam room. She took my blood pressure, weighed me and asked me a few background questions. She was professional, warm and friendly. I was then asked to go back to the waiting room. A few minutes later, I was called by a sonographer, who took me to an exam room. The room was also very worn out and not very clean. The temperature in there was really high -- so high that the AC was on (in January!). The lady performed the exam with no problem. She was also very nice, gentle and professional. After being asked to wait a few more minutes, I was taken to Dr. Shaw's office to meet him. I liked him right away. He was very friendly and welcoming. I sat down and we started talking. He was very warm and kind. He gave me his personal phone number which I thought was nice. As a first time mom, I had a lot of questions, but he took the time to answer each and every one of them. He then explained what I should be expecting in the upcoming months and what my visits at his office would be like. I stayed in his office for about 30 minutes. Dr. Shaw has an interesting sense of humor that not everyone will get but I liked him. I liked him because he's funny, direct, kind, outrageous in a good way and will tell you exactly what is what and to calm down if you're being a little too crazy (which first time moms usually are). I liked that from him right away. His professionalism, compassion and kindness really made up for the sad condition of the office. He delivered my baby via C-section and I couldn't have asked for a better doctor. I was nervous about the epidural, but he held my hands and helped me focus on something else. The whole procedure went really well and my scar looks amazing (I was really concerned about that and Dr. Shaw did an incredible job!!) Would I recommend going to Dr. Shaw? The positive: -Claudia: couldn't have asked for a better nurse. She went above and beyond to help me and made this a good experience. She ALWAYS called me back when she said she would, she ALWAYS confirmed my appointments, she ALWAYS took the time to talk and ask how I was doing. She is wonderful! I wish there were 10 Claudias because she really did everything for me. A lot of times she took over the responsibilities of the receptionists and I was grateful for that. People like her, hard working and conscientious, deserve to be acknowledged and recognized -- her real worth should be a commodity and not only with me but other patients I came to be acquainted with, she definitely earns it day in and day out. -Olga: she's the sonographer I had for all my visits and she is incredible! Professional, friendly and nice. Much better than the other lady who isn't friendly at all. -Dr. Shaw: As I said he is the man!!! The best!! I already told him I'm going back to him if I have a second child. The negative: -The poor condition of this office. Please fix it or open a new location! -The receptionists: These ladies had a major attitude and made mistakes many times. They scheduled me with the wrong time or the wrong date so many times (which Claudia then fixed on the down-low for me to what originally had been agreed on and scheduled). They were rude quite a few times over the phone to me and my husband. They never made the effort to fix an issue I had with billing and I had to call the department myself. Like I said, Claudia ended up scheduling my appointments and always called me to remind me of them -- I still don't know why those receptionists even work in this office. Overall I would highly recommend Dr. Shaw if you are expecting. He is wonderful and will take great care of you. I only wish he worked in a nicer office or better yet, had his own practice! Dr Shaw delivered my baby, but he is very insensitive and very I don't care! He has a rush attitude and he doesn't exam you, he doesn't care if you are in pain. Had a miscarriage was very insensitive, told me oh u need to get over it and it happens all the time. He only cares about certain patients. When I delivered my baby he came in on Monday and didn't even exam me he told me oh your fine and left. My insurance paid him a hefty bill! When I became pregnant, I was referred to Dr. Shaw by my gynecologist, who was no longer delivering babies. I was very pleased with my experience with Dr. Shaw and his assistant Esmina throughout the entire pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum check-ups. He always made time for my questions and never made me feel rushed. He took time to get to know my husband and me, which made us feel very comfortable going into the delivery. He is very direct and straightforward, yet he maintains a light-hearted atmosphere with his quirky sense of humor. During my pregnancy, a few health issues popped up along the way, and Dr Shaw was always very sensitive to our concerns. He referred us to specialists as needed and offered us comfort and encouragement throughout the process. After the delivery, I had a complication from the epidural, and he worked tirelessly to make sure I received the attention and care I needed in the hospital. It was clear that he was advocating for me and he continued to follow up with me and the hospital staff until the problem was completely resolved. My only word of caution is that it was extremely difficult to get lab results and paperwork from the office sent over to specialists for various appointments. It often required two or three follow up calls to make sure the labs/scans/reports were sent out as requested, and it was always a scramble in the end. Despite that, I would still heartily recommend Dr. Shaw and his practice to any friend. read more

I've been going to Dr. Shaw for the past 8 years or so. A few years back, he diagnosed high grade lesions and performed a successful LEEP procedure. No complications and healed beautifully. Dr. Shaw recently treated my "geriatric" pregnancy delivering a healthy baby boy. He monitored carefully my placenta previa--which resolved itself as he suspected it would--and my gestational hypertension--which led to induced childbirth at week 37. During the entirety of my pregnancy, I felt at ease with the care and attention he gave. He answered all of my questions and concerns. I have been a patient of Dr Shaw for over 5 years and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience with him. He is professional, knowledgeable and takes his time with each and every patient. He recently saw me throughout my pregnancy and I found him to be extremely thorough. Early on in my pregnancy we had a "scare," and he took great care to not only put my mind at ease, but also walk me through each and every step I could take to gain a more definitive diagnosis. I found his professional opinion honest and for a place of experience. Yes, I had a lot of sonograms, more so than what other girlfriends experienced, but I didn't really mind knowing that we were dotting every i, and crossing every t. It seemed some of my other friends had less of a relationship with their doctor during their pregnancy and I much prefer the more thorough approach at Rosh Maternal. In addition, the most remarkable quality of Dr. Shaw is that he is FUNNY! I never thought my husband would enjoy visiting the OBGYN, but he looked forward to our appointments just to get in a good laugh with Dr. Shaw. Also important to note, if he is overseeing your pregnancy there is a good chance he will deliver your baby. Many of my girlfriends said "oh, you'll never get your doctor." Well that's not true. He lives closed to the hospital and does everything he can to ensure he will be there to deliver. Unfortunately for me, my baby came early and he was enjoying his last day of vacation - thus, I missed him in the delivery room. With that said, the very next day Dr. Shaw came to my hospital room to check on me. We were both disappointed he couldn't be there, but laughed he'd make it to baby #2. We visited Dr. Shaw after he came highly recommended from our OBGYN who we trusted unconditionally, but no longer delivers. The recommendation didn't disappoint - we could not have been more pleased with our overall experience with Dr. Shaw's practice and expertise. Dr. Shaw is extremely thorough, personable, and honest/straightforward, which was extremely valuable during the entire process. He listens to all your questions and will let you know if something is of a true concern or not - offering in-depth explanations when needed so you feel as informed as possible. We had quite a few moments throughout the pregnancy that gave us serious scares, as I'm sure many couples do - but Dr. Shaw was able to assuage our concerns when we were admittedly overreacting, and walk us through a workable process when it seemed like something we needed to address. He was readily available via text or phone, which put our minds at ease in any situation. Sometimes waits were long at the practice, but we truly believe that was a good thing - it meant he was taking his time with his patients, and not just "checking the box." Whenever we talked to him, we felt like we and our baby were the only people that mattered in the moment, which is an invaluable feeling in a city as hectic and chaotic as NY. During the labor/delivery and post delivery, he made frequent visits with us and the baby, to ensure we were all doing well. He coached us through delivery and his team at Lenox Hill for delivery and postpartum is second to none. It's evident he truly cares about his patients and we couldn't have asked for a better doctor to oversee our pregnancy and the delivery of our baby boy! Dr. Shaw is hands down, the best. I was referred by my former OBGYN when I got knocked up, because that doc no longer delivered babies. I showed up at Dr. Shaw's office, thinking I was around 6 weeks pregnant. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to me, that was no longer the case and Dr. Shaw had to be the bearer of very bad news. They couldn't find a heartbeat - the pregnancy wasn't viable. So, what does Dr. Shaw do on the first day I've even met him? He takes my hysterical sobbing self into his office, sits me down, fetches me a glass of water and plenty of Kleenex and doesn't let me leave until I've... a) calmed down and... b) come to understand that I will get pregnant again - and that he has the best fertility specialist referral to help make that happen. I think it was around 3 months later when I was back in Dr. Shaw's office - pregnant again thanks to his referral - and it was seriously smooth sailing from there on out. Dr. Shaw is incredibly compassionate, nice and pretty damn funny too. He also happens to be a superior surgeon - who performed my C-section almost two months ago. Lemme put it this way... I didn't even know he had started the surgery, let alone finished it - and I was wide awake. Didn't feel pressure, pulling - nothing. Just saw my beautiful baby girl and immediately cried happy tears along with my husband, (who is also a huge fan of Dr. Shaw's). Big bonus too,,, his surgical prowess will result in a hardly noticeable scar. The man knows how to close! Anyway, if you want a wonderful OBGYN, Dr. Shaw is definitely your man. Highly, highly recommend. I like him so much in fact that I'm sticking with him as my gynecologist even though I have no plans for more children. He's that good. Again, let me reiterate... Dr. Shaw has been my doctor for over 15 years. He successfully delivered both of my children. I come from a medical family and my father (an MD) has agreed with every choice that he had made over the course of the birth of 2 children and 2 emergencies. He and Yasmina both have wonderful bedside manners and make you feel comfortable in any situation. I like that for each visit he sees you and then speaks to you separately in his office. It may be quick, but he listens. I had a very difficult MC and then a week later a case of painful peritonitis. Both sent me to the emergency room 2 night for each issue. Dr. Shaw was amazing and checked on my constantly. It took time to diagnose the peritonitis, but he continued to pursue all avenues until it was understood and resolved. Though I was in a great deal of pain, I relaxed knowing he was with me. I had C-Sections for both children. The first was an emergency. We exhausted all options and it was a very smart move. The second was a much due to prior complications. He made what could have been stressful a positive event. My scar is barely visible. He is also a parent of two young children and relates well to all steps of pregnancy. He is cautious, realistic, knowledgeable, and a wonderful doctor. read more

Dr Shaw is THE BEST! I highly recommend him to anyone!! Dr Shaw recently helped me from Week 9 to delivery of my first beautiful baby boy. Beginning with my first appointment to my most recent, I never had to wait longer than 10 minutes in the waiting room. I was fortunate enough to work "on the road" during my pregnancy but for anyone with an office job or an inflexible schedule, this place is perfect for you. Most of my appts included a sonogram - probably more sonograms than other docs but all were covered by my insurance and it gave me peace of mind to frequently see my son and knowing that Dr S was hands on with tracking his development. I had friends who were jealous that I had so many sonograms, some didn't see their baby after week 20. I am over 35 but otherwise had a fairly smooth pregnancy. Dr Shaw is very straight forward - if he is concerned about something, he will tell you - if there is nothing to worry about he won't let you harp over your concern. I am a major worry wort and tend to obsess over things. With Dr Shaw, if I brought up an issue and he wasn't worried, I honestly didn't give it a second thought - he will not let you worry over something that is a non-issue. I am very thankful for that. He's also really funny and personable so I enjoyed speaking with him during my appts. His staff ,especially Claudia, are just fantastic. Everyone is warm, compassionate and friendly. I met with Claudia during every appt and she was a huge part of my pregnancy. My delivery was rough. I didn't sleep all night, felt uncomfortable even after the epidural and was dilating very very very slowly, which was a little concerning. After about 14 hours, Dr Shaw sat down with me and my family and recommended a c section - he was not forceful (it was not an emergency) but considering my circumstance thought it would be the best step bc I was suffering. It ended up being the best decision I ever made. The procedure took less than an hour, music was playing and everyone was making jokes which eased my anxiety and a nurse gave me updates every step of the way. The staff was so sweet and positive, I actually enjoyed the experience. Dr Shaw, Claudia and staff feel like family and I actually enjoy going to the doctors office to see them! I had my first baby with Dr Shaw back in January and I absolutely loved him. He was patient and answered all my silly first time mom questions, treated my husband like a person and not just a sperm donor, and was all around a great doctor. When delivery day came, he was wonderful to my parents and explained everything that was happening to them as well as to me and my husband (i had a slightly complicated birth). He even made me laugh in the midst of me crying about needing a c section. I can't say enough good things about this man. I see bad reviews on here for him and it just makes me sad , because he was so wonderful to me and my family. read more

Dr. Shaw has been my OB GYN for over a decade. I've appreciated having a doctor who is able to be professional and knowledgeable while also managing to be light. I'm in my late 40s with history of cancer in my family, and while I tend to feel anxious leading up to a visit, Dr. Shaw has always put me at ease. I'm grateful for building a warm rapport with him over the years. He's respected my reproductive decisions while talking me through all available options. A few years ago, I had to undergo a D&C to remove polyps, and I was so grateful that he was the one performing the procedure. I had the easiest recovery I could imagine. I'm sorry to read complaints about the waiting room here in others' Yelp reviews. Those issues can be dealt with by an office manager - those aren't things, to me, that reflect on a doctor's capability. read more

I had been seeing Dr.Shaw for over 10years as my gyno, I have never been disappointed. I received great treatment & advise for great vaginal health (ie fall back on wearing thongs - best advise EVER!!) when we became pregnant with our first child. I decided to stick with Dr.Shaw throughout my pregnancy & we were glad I did. Dr.Shaw is always professional & not judgmental. He welcomed the numerous questions of first time parents. He offered his unbiased opinions and recommendations based on his 20plus years of experience. He gave me his personal cellphone number for immediate access - how great is that? He is very knowledgeable, laid back and does not put on airs. Our son was delivered safely & healthily on June 9th. We are grateful to Dr.Shaw & his staff for their expertise, making us comfortable, making us laugh & mostly helping us have a beautiful healthy baby. Ps. I had to undergo a Dilation and Curettage procedure (D and C) from Dr. Howard Shaw, after an unfortunate miscarriage. I then saw him for a standard follow up exam, one that was anything but thorough, and lasted for about 30 seconds. The aftermath left me without a menstrual cycle for months. Exams and tests by subsequent doctors led to my final diagnosis, which concluded that I had SEVERE Asherman's Syndrome caused by overly aggressive scraping by Dr. Shaw. Since my diagnosis, I have had to undergo numerous re-corrective surgeries for my uterine lining by two different Specialists. After three completed surgeries, I am unable to have my own biological children due to the amount of damage that was done by Dr. Shaw. It was never conveyed to me beforehand that this procedure posed any risks. Actually, I was told I would be more at risk for infections if I did not undergo the procedure. I'm writing to promote awareness to all women. I recommend that everyone do his or her research before undergoing a D&C procedure. There are most certainly risks involved. I also think these positive reviews are fake or requested. Rather than explaining delicate situations in an intelligent manner, he is flippant, and seems more interested in making jokes. And the waiting room is a disaster area. When a woman goes to reception, the assistants talk so loudly to the patients that everyone in the room can hear what should be discussed privately. Completely unprofessional. It is not uncommon to hear patients lose their patience, loudly. And understandably so. read more

Very happy with my experience working with Dr. Shaw who delivered by first baby last month. I was seeing him for a number of years for routine stuff (annual check up, etc.), but really got to know him much better during my pregnancy. I felt the care was really thorough and top-notch, including referrals within the practice for some high risk concerns, etc. As a first time mom, I came to each visit with a list of questions, and did not feel rushed in having them answered. I appreciate his sense of humor, considering I was a nervous wreck throughout much of the pregnancy. I was able to reach him quickly when any concerns arose, including my daughter's earlier than expected arrival. Happy to recommend him to others. I was referred to Dr. Shaw by a friend and did not continue my search for the ob. It was my first pregnancy and I am completely satisfied with how dr Shaw handled it. He was always available by phone, he saw me at every appointment (I haven't even met any other doctors at the office), he was there for my delivery. I think trust is important in these cases, and I did trust my doctor with my baby. It's all that matters. Yes, he can be late sometimes for your appointment, but not because he's negligent, but because he tends to his patients 24/7 at Lenox Hill. If I had to wait a little for my appointment, I would just remind myself that it could have been me giving birth and having him there is most important. I have been Dr. Shaw's patient for just under a year and he recently delivered my baby in June. I'm not sure that words will do justice to the care that Dr. Shaw provides his patients but I feel compelled to share my experience. I'll start by saying that my pregnancy was not complicated with what I'll call common pregnancy issues (I'm not making light of those issues, just want to be specific about my experience). However, I was pregnant through IVF and had recently suffered a chemical pregnancy. On top of that I am 39 years old with an existing thyroid issue and a genetic concern. So I had my own very unique worries. At my first meeting with Dr. Shaw I could tell immediately that he really, really listens to his patients and has an innate sense of understanding people. He is exceptionally thorough without being an alarmist, which automatically puts people at ease. In every sense he is an adviser and not a dictator. Every decision is your own with guidance from him. He is a straight shooter and will never BS you or dismiss your concerns. On top of that he will crack you up with stories from his own personal experiences in life. That's kind of a bonus. Additionally, his assistant Jocelyn is amazing. She is a great complement to Dr. Shaw and they have a fantastic rapport that patients seem to vibe off of. My confidence in and regard for Dr. Shaw as a medical professional and human being in general is immeasurable. read more
