While visiting the campus, can't really complain about the campus itself. It was clean, and small and the doors where open to come and go. More maps for newbies would be helpful cause if you never been here and don't know where you are doing it's complicated trying to locate the spot where you need to go. I even had someone stop me asking where a place was, I was just as dumbfounded as they were. No help, what so ever. Now I don't know what the pricing of this place, not looking into it either. And once you stop attending and you have to go back for any documents the people working there treat you like if you were asking for a favor, they are not nice at all. My name is Cici Collins and I transferred from this university in 2019. I played volleyball at HBU (HCU now) and soon after transferred to the Big Sky Conference and played at Weber State. Eryn Leja, Trent Herman, and Cameron Sitler contributed to one of the most dysfunctional, traumatizing experiences I could have ever imagined being a part of. The pain these people and this place caused me can never be undone. I have grown up and moved on with my life now, but just because I have moved on does not mean that I have forgotten what I had to endure at HBU under these three individuals. This school has ruined the rest of my college career. I transferred to a different institution and when I try to send credits and contact administrators about my issues, they failed to do so. I have to retake classes at this new institution, waste of my time. I wish for anyone to look onto the next school. The university itself is safe but the overall area that it is in is nothing to be proud of. The school is almost run by young graduated students who have attended the university. The staff as I said are young and this causes many different issues as far as how the campus is run. The thing that I must highlight is that I am currently on campus as a fraternity president and let me just start by saying that they could care less about Greek life. if you are not one of the university Christian organizations then to them you are pretty much not important. The next thing that I have to warn you about is the fact that if you live on campus make sure you live close because the university makes you pay a lot of money to attend but they do not do much for their residents other than offer prayer and "convo". The food is also nothing to write home about most people complain of food poisoning after eating the food on campus sometimes it is ok and sometimes it is not but don't count on it to be the same every time. The next thing is the housing options which are very limited and very expensive the university is spending money on a new building but does not want to expand and add more housing for its students. The other thing about housing is that get ready for roaches and mold and residential staff which are also students that could care less about fixing the problems. In all honesty, the university is more worried about the all-mighty dollar than anything else and that shows especially when it comes to clubs and other organizations on campus. Smaller classrooms which are really good for students and professors to communicate I say go!! If you are planning to come here you won't regret it! This school has a lot of potential, valuable resources for students to succeed, and it's a nice small campus BUT I haven't ever dealt with a financial aid department or cashiers office as unorganized and uninformed as the one at this school. I also want to add that it's way too expensive and not affordable despite what they tell you. The professors sometimes are so stingy with grading also so you're spending loads of money, working outside of school, doing loads of school Work and giving all your effort and you'll be lucky enough to get a passing grade. I'm not sure if it's this way across all degree plans but if you're planning on getting a MSHRM degree just a heads up. I know a lot of people who can vouch for me on this as well. No one can give a consistent or definite answer on when you will receive financial aid. They don't give you refund checks until the end of the semester which is silly because as a graduate student you are already more than likely under financial strain and the refund helps with school materials etc. and you don't see any of that money until the end of the semester. They can't tell you any specific dates or explain the process, everyone gives you the run around and ultimately they sound uncertain of what information they give you. This is very frustrating for students because it adds unnecessary stress. Why isn't the school able to communicate with students accurately and timely? It is also often difficult to get a hold of someone to speak to about these matters. The workers often catch attitudes about your valid questions because they don't know the answers. I'm really disappointed with the service I've gotten from specifically the cashiers office. When you have had a good experience with a financial aid department at a higher education university much larger than this one it makes you wonder what is going on over there. I wouldn't recommend hbu as a first choice to anyone for this specific reasons. How someone handles your finances and reports it to you is very important and they have consistently done a poor job. read more

What a beautiful experience this was! I was invited to attend my, soon to be daughter in law's graduation. This is her second go round, previous having walked across the stage for her Bachelors degree and now walking across for her Masters degree. So proud! The entire staff made this such a memorable and touching experience. My opinion of this higher learning institution is definitely positive. read more

ALMA MATER. Orange and blue. Huskies Dawgs up. AMAZING facilities. Chapel is outfitted with a beautiful organ. Brand new bookstore after a flood several years ago. Some dorms are new (but expensive). HBU bunnies hop from perfectly manicured bush to bush on campus. If you're around long enough, you might even see the mascot on a walk. I love HBU faculty and academics ... Currently in attendance here and the bad reviews are correct. The tuition cost for this institution is sky-high and they're not doing anything productive with the money. Several of the campus facilities need updating, especially the bathrooms, chemistry labs, library, and classrooms. The safety showers and eye wash stations are outdated and rusted, there are little to no computers available in the library to use, majority of the classrooms either have actual chalkboards or nothing at all, leaving teachers to write on the walls. There aren't really any academic advisors there, and from my experience, the person they assign you to doesn't have a clue and are also working multiple jobs roles for the campus. They have laptop pods there for students to borrow, which is a plus. Everything here is disorganized; the cashiers office will tally up additional charges at the last minute and claim you're not financially settled even though you're on a payment plan. There is a constant run around between the cashiers office and financial aid, both of which are unhelpful. The bookstore doesn't have books for you to walk-in and purchase, you must make your textbook orders online. So no quick run in to get the needed materials; it's mostly a paraphernalia shop. To make things worse, they don't have majority of the items that are mandatory like lab coats and the athletics department (which they shuttle the bulk of the money into) gets priority when it comes to getting required materials and class enrolment. The student body here is like going to high school again (very cliquey) and they literally force their religion down your throat by making you attend their convocation for CLW points, which are required to graduate!!! Please don't come here, especially if you're a science major. Their required course work isn't even up to par with other institutions. Faculty and staff are exceptionally kind though and understanding (five stars there). read more

I am 1999 MLA graduate of HBU and loved my experience there. Dr. Newell Boyd, and librarian Jon Suter were great teachers in this program. I gained much from my time here, and have been been happily employed throughout the country as a part time instructor since! Don't let their '10 year plan' or excessive scholarship money fool you. This campus is definitely lacking in allot. Student life is super lame and for the money they're asking for they don't offer nearly enough support for any degree that's s not nursing. Tuition goes up every year and the humanities/Christianity courses are bs. For a long time I regretted coming here. However, once I got to my upper levels it all changed. The professors and students really are amazing. The smaller size makes it very personal in your learning and also with the student teacher relationship. I've met so many wonderful people and opportunities here. If you're planning on going here - go for the class size. Having a lower student to faculty ratio really makes the experience and process of leaning so much more enjoyable. Came to this campus for one of my friends nursing pinning ceremony. The hall was really nice and enough space for the event it was hosting. There was also a decent amount of parking space. It was a little hard navigating and finding the building the event was held in. There weren't any signs I could follow so that's prob the only con I have for this place. read more

This campus is not accessible. If you or your student is physically handicapped in anyway don't go to Houston Baptist University's campus and expect anything other than unauthorized vehicles parking in disabled parking, "automatic" doors that don't work when the button is pushed, and elevators that are constantly out of service. Not to mention that the sidewalks are so absolutely atrocious that there is no way that someone using mobility aids could maneuver the campus safely nor comfortably. There is no reason that a university of this size (and tuition price) should be this inaccessible for students, staff, and visitors. read more

For a very small/intimate university the prices are through the roof! It's an overall clean campus but theirs a lot of things that can be updated like the classrooms/seats/labs/ etc. All of my teachers are very attentive and caring (if you miss a class they'll email you), which was shocking to me because of my past university/college. Our cafe has chick-fil-a, which gets crazy busy around lunch time everyday. The HBU staff is very helpful and literally everyone is nice. I recommend this school if you have a scholarship, your parents have so much money they don't know what to do with, or you just like to be in debt! Overall it's a good uni, the money we spend to attend here what is it used for? Because definitely they're not updating any on campus. read more

While there are some excellent faculty, the majority of classes are not taught by full-time doctoral faculty but by adjuncts. The administration does not care about the staff or faculty which leads to a lot of turnover and very few people who actually know enough to be able to help you. Where to start? They accepted me into their school June/July. I signed up for classes in December and had to wait for my FASFA to be updated with the school information. I met with the counselor and they said I received the Dean's scholarship. It sounded amazing because this private university comes with a jaw dropping price. Who wouldn't want some free money to help pay for tuition? Let's fast forward to a month later. It's a week before schools about to start and my FASFA went through. They sent me a letter with how to accept my FASFA 1 week before school starts. Admissions apparently changed the type of student I was, just to justify their DOUBLE in my tuition. Along, with telling me that I no longer qualify for the Dean's scholarship because of the type of student I am. WOW. Thanks for hitting me with a money bomb LAST MINUTE. Who wouldn't be livid? They accepted me a while ago. They should have gotten my paperwork together. Maybe even prior to me signing up for classes? But what do they care? It's not happening to them, nor did they want to alleviate my stress level. Did I catch an attitude? Yes. Was I wrong for it? No. Put yourself in my shoes and you would react the same way. (FYI. This new information that they sprung on me last minute means a jaw dropping 30k extra that I'd have to find somewhere. Not including the original tuition fee I was going to pay) Onto the Financial aid office. Where the receptionist from admission called to inform the financial aid girl my situation. I then asked how am I going to find an the additional money that I was no longer getting from the scholarship. Her response "get another loan." I mean it's easy for her to say. She wasn't just hit with this LAST minute. No where did they try to say, let's see what I can do for you. Seeing they know their tuition is up the roof. When you transfer to this school, you have to take a computer proficiency test. Which you have to pay roughly $80 to take a test. Basically to say you know how to use Microsoft excel, word, PowerPoint. You have two chances to take the test and pass with a 70. If not, you have to take the computer proficiency class. (that would've added more to tuition costs)Sounds easy enough right? Well, one wrong click and it automatically answers it incorrect. That test system was plain irritating. Also, don't expect for a quick response when emailing admissions/registrars Office. I emailed the registrars office over a week ago. I'd expect a timely response. Have I heard anything? Nope. But they will be sure to email me when they need me to pay my tuition. I honestly wouldn't wish this situation on anyone. If they did their paperwork in a TIMELY manner. I would've been better prepared for what came my way. But what do they care, it's not their life, money, or degree on the line. I'd expect them to be more professional and do things quickly seeing they are a "private" university. It's not like they are that filled with students; like the University of Houston. read more

HBU has kids running the University. Screwed up scholarships, classes, lost paperwork and graduation. It's so unorganized and clueless. Over rated and to high. It's not worth the trouble or the money. They don't help with work internships or placement afterwards. There is basically no tutoring, it's only based on other students trying. I'm currently a sophomore at HBU, I transferred last semester and I must say that overall it's an okay establishment. The campus is beautiful, the admissions department is friendly/helpful and they remember you, great class sizes (around 20 or so students per class), foodcarts and Chick-fil-A is on campus, 3 different dance teams. Now for the parts I don't like, this may take awhile.. First and foremost the tuition/scholarship situation. Upfront you are aware the tuition is about $40,000 although they never specify whether it's per year or per semester. Well guess what? That hefty price tag is per semester folks! To top it off they offer most students a hefty scholarship of like $20,000. Well they don't tell you that the scholarship is split between the two semesters that year. So you may think "Wow! Half of my tuition is payed for!" You thought wrong, because these cheapskates are doing the old bait and switch on ya. Now for the price you would think that the housing is up to date and the cafeteria is clean. Well it's not. Some students complain of a moldy smell in some of the residences and there have been two major outbreaks this year alone due to cafeteria workers coming into work and infecting everyone. They don't wash the dishes correctly, they don't prepare the food correctly, and some of them don't even listen or seem to care when you ask them to cook your food a certain way. We have a band, however they are treated badly. Not enough funding even though all the sports teams seem to have plenty of money to go around. If you expect your band to travel to your games and play for you, the least you could do is provide a bus for the musicians and their equipment. They don't. Some teachers are nice, some are verbally abusive and constantly say how stupid the class is. It's really the luck of the draw with that one. As for diversity, this school doesn't really have that. Yes there are poc who walk around but there is still exclusion and subpar accommodation when there are "incidents" (which there were several after Trump was elected). All in all, it's an ok school, you can only benefit if A. you're an athlete OR B. you're Caucasian (no this isn't "reverse racism" this is simply a fact) Consider these issues before you apply read more

I spent 5yrs at this institution and for the first 2yrs I was very happy. The small classes, diversity, and the great professors played a big part in that. My 3rd year in, Dr. Sloan became president and my tuition increased so much that I had to take out loans for the first time. I ended up graduating with about $75,000+ in debt. The following year the school cut the Instrumental degrees and fired violin, percussion, and many other instructors. Now, they've hired non-doctorate to teach band for the football team and firing PhDs who are world renowned vocalists, pianists, and composers. I am not very happy with my alma mater and frankly, it is not a place that exudes Christian values from the administration level. it's kinda hard to write a review for an entire university, but i'll give mine from the point-of-view i've developed at hbu. i graduated from my undergraduate studies at louisiana state university with a bachelor of science in psychology, knowing full-well that i'd have to go on to graduate school in order to do what i wanted. my husband...well, fiance at the time...had already been accepted into med school here in houston, so i set out to find a degree program that fit my needs here in the city. after looking around, i discovered that hbu had a reputable master of arts program in psychology, with an emphasis on counseling. I am now 3/4 through the program, and the experience i've had has been pretty amazing. the school is relatively small, which is exactly what i wanted in a graduate school, and the advisors and professors are able to focus a lot of attention on the individual students. meaning, they actually know your name, how far you are in the program, and any concerns you choose to voice. the campus and materials are state of the art and modern, although you will be paying for it since it is a private school. the faculty is extremely knowledgable and concerned with student learning. overall, i am extremely happy that i chose hbu for my graduate studies. i do not know that i would have been happy in such a small school for my undergrad years, though. if you're into a very personal, individual setting for your education, however, this is the place to be! read more
