Cabins are new and fairly spacious, with bathroom facilities and clean water points provided in close proximity to all campsites. Shout out to Addison on staff for his professionalism and care, we felt like he tried to make sure we got the best experience possible with tips about wildlife and an overall positive attitude that impacted both of our group stays this year. Hello Rapunzel!…read more Built in 1929, this 34-foot tower is a must visit. It's about a 1 mile hike up with a slight incline. I was able to do it with my kids. Once you get to the tower and climb to the top, you can see the Litchfield hills, Berkshires, and even NY on a clear day. There is a parking area and the place was pretty quiet when we went. There was a couple of people but overall it was peaceful and not crowded at all. If you love history, hiking, and landmarks, this is worth a visit.

Three mountain ranges converge here: the Berkshires; the Adirondacks; the Catskills. Its near Great Mountain; the Heusatonic Highlands; all sorts of cool forests and swamps and cliffs and lakes and ravines. This is not for 'tourists'. There are no resorts. This area is for real environmental freaks. There's no signs; no phone signals; no mile markers; no addresses...just lat/lon coordinates. Google won't help you. You won't get an invite from anybody to come here. There's nowhere to stay; there's no food other than that which you bring with you. You kinda have to know people to find your way around to anything. You have to have a personal motive for being here. Consider it a goal...

I went on the Broadwalk Trail years ago with my dog Emma. She loved it, except for one small thing…read more- the space it takes for two humans, one lifting medium sized dog, is about the width of the trail over the water and in the swamp. You can take strollers, but it may cause careful maneuvering around each other. The area in general is beautiful and colorful in the fall. In the summer it is bland New England green, and watch out for ticks! The new parking lot is pretty big and gets cars off the road.

This place is so serene!…read more The trail is a 1.2 mile loop; the elevated wooden walkway is built around a pond called "Little Pond". The views of the dense forest and wetland is picturesque. We saw birds and wildlife tracks. The trail also goes of over Bantam river in a couple of spots. There were plenty of parking on the gravel. The sign at the entrance states "White Memorial Boardwalk Parking". First you walk on a flat dirt path and take a right onto the boardwalk, which is marked black and white. There is a huge power line going through the wetland. Some of the boardwalk got narrow in certain spots. We were able to bring our baby stroller on; thankfully it was a jeep offroading one, because there were steps, rocks, and roots in certain areas. We did notice a handful of dog poop baggies on the ground; why would someone bag it and just leave it on the side of the trail? The expectation is to take only pictures and leave only footsteps. How can you pollute such beautiful grounds when you're using it also? Think people..... Aside from that, I love the boardwalk concept. I wish I had this closer to me, I'd definitely be there daily.

At first glance, a neighborhood park with a few cottages, a field, and a large dirt parking lot…read more The cottages were for the Girl Scouts based on the sign I saw on them. I was here for the playground so I walked across the field to the back and found it. I didn't realize there were parking in the back lot and closer to the playground. The fenced in playground was big and had plenty of swings and space for my toddler to run around. The weather was perfect (55 degrees in February) so there were a few other people there. There was snow on the ground in certain parts, so it was very muddy/slippery in some spots. A few of the playscapes were taped off with caution tape; I'm assuming they were broken. This park is on 200 acres of land and has many events. There is a 50 acre lake area. The spring fed lake is called West Hill Lake; people can swim, fish, and boat in it. In the summer, you will need to buy a beach pass. They also have tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, and basketball courts. Nearby and across the street, you can find the Franklin P. Kearney Conservative Trail. Overall, a great spot to get some fresh air and exercise. Hopefully they will fix the broken playscapes and it will be less muddy when it gets warmer soon.

Wagner Woods is another 63 acre Simsbury Land Trust gem, acquired in 2010. There was a small…read moreparking lot on Great Pond Road that could fit about 5 vehicles. When I went, it was full so I parked at George Hall's farm on Old Farms Road. This farm had a spacious gravel lot and connects directly to the Wagner Woods trails. There were multiple trails including the 0.3 mile purple Hall trail, in Wagner Woods. There are about 1.7 miles total. The trails were pretty easy and flat with occasional tree roots and rocks; there were some small boardwalks for areas that would often get wet. My family and I enjoyed the walk; it's kid-friendly, my child enjoyed it. There were wetlands, forest, vernal pool, stream, and a hayfield. The land used to be a historic farm, so there were remnants of old rock walls and foundations. I saw a sign stating that the field was used by the original owner as an aircraft landing strip. The walk was serene, with many different birds. There are approximately 60 species of birds; I've only spotted a couple, including a falcon. I've traversed the purple, blue, and red trails on this visit. The orange trail leads to Hop Brook; there's a viewing platform there. We spotted a bench too if you need a break. Overall, an enjoyable walk and I look forward to checking out the other trails next time I go.

The Wagner Woods has 1.7 miles of trail that meander through a 63 acre property…read more We parked on the Great Pond State Forest side and walked the Red Trail through the forest under a canopy of trees. We saw wetlands, a small pond, and a big hay-field with dozens of bluebird houses around the perimeter. The trail was flat and wide and very easy to navigate, just watch out for the occasional rock or two. We did get a little confused on the trail, because we saw some trails that weren't represented on our map. The map showed a Red, Yellow, Orange, Blue, and Purple Trail, but some pretty big trails weren't marked. For example, the big trail around the hay-field wasn't marked and we really couldn't tell where we were headed. We ended up doubling back to the Red Trail, where at least we had confidence that we knew where we were going. Other than a few moments of hesitation and confusion, we had a very nice time in the Wagner Woods.

This is a brand new CLC trail. Plenty of parking. I went on a Saturday, mid morning. The initial…read morerun of the trail from the lot to the main trails did not seem well cleared but the main trails are well cleared and amply marked with flares. I cobbled together a roughly 2.3 mile loop. Started on Bluestem then Coyote Alley. Definitely take the short detour to the lake on the Otter Ledge Trail. It has lily pads blooming with white flowers and is just beautiful. Then I took the Community Forest Road to the Barred Owl trail to head back to the parking area. All shaded. Mostly easy but there are some hills. Wear good shoes as with any forest trail. Despite dousing myself in bug spray, the mosquitoes whispered sweet nothings in my ear much of the way, but they love my exhaled CO2. Bugs were actually worse in the forest than by the lake. Boats are there, free to take out, and there is fishing info posted. I only saw one other couple while there. The only trail I didn't see was Big Woods. Will return to explore that. Lovely area!
