We have known and loved the Hotel Pattee since first visiting about 15 years ago. It has recently reopend under new owners and we were so excited to visit again. It is still as lovely as ever and the new owners are working very hard to make sure every guest has a great stay. We stayed in the Kids' Suite with our three sons and they really loved it. The whole room (including the bunk beds) is designed by a local Iowa artist in a whimsical fashion with high quality materials. Each room is unique, the original renovation (which was very high quality) is still in great shape. And, we enjoyed the restaurant. The bartenders need to learn some more classic drinks and we hope they will bring back room service. We will for sure be back again, probably during bike season to try out the Raccoon River Valley Trail. You will not regret visiting! read more

I have stayed in the Historic Hotel Pattee in Perry, Iowa, on four different occasions. Each theme room is very different and each is filled with real antiques. My family has enjoyed each stay. We go there to celebrate special events in our family. We live 45 miles away and we have no connection to the hotel other than we enjoy a one night get away every three months or so. We usually take a $79 per night special rate for a Monday to Thursday night stay so it is very reasonable to stay there. The parking is free. The WI-Fi is free. I think the only taxes were the 6% Iowa Sales Tax so the total hotel bill was very reasonable. The hotel's restaurant seems very good but I have only eaten there one time. read more

This is for the hotel restaurant only. $14 for a mediocre lunch buffet. The chili was good, but everything else a disappointment. I'd looked forward to ordering from the menu but when we were seated we were told it wasn't an option, that we had to do the buffet--despite the fact that one table over and at the bar people were enjoying their menu items. Then AFTER we were finishing our enforced buffet, the table for 6 behind us were offered menus! Unbelievable. read more

This is a place to love. Old but beautifully restored and lovingly maintained, with unique, homey rooms, and an unpretentious, totally informal, easy-going elegance. This place is a breath of fresh air in a world of increasingly drab, impersonal, cookie cutter hotel chains. There's a grace to the Pattee, and I felt that everyone, including the owners (who are seemingly always on-site, working alongside their terrific staff), goes out of their way to accommodate and please. There's no room service, but the restaurant serves up classic, generously portioned breakfasts, lunches, and dinners and is hands down the best in many a mile -- a wonderful chef serves up real Iowa comfort food and home cooking a gourmet could love, in an easy, informal atmosphere. And there's a two lane totally renovated, up-to-date bowling alley downstairs that's part of the hotel! Whaaat?? I travel weekly for work, and stay in hotels often. I have never EVER been so blown back the way we were rudely talked too. As a guest, I was inquiring the breakdown of the cost and she was very irritated that I didn't automatically know that the "incidental cost" is added in incase we decide to use the extra amenities in the room. She was so mad in fact she left the desk and slammed the door behind her. Really?! You work in a hotel, in the middle of nowhere Iowa, your life is not that hard to take care of paying customers. read more

The. Hotel is the nicest one for many miles around. The decor is refined, beautiful and comfortable. There are really nice customer oriented people that work there, and then there are the others... Breakfast in the restaurant was really good. I paid and left a tip with cash and got change. My change was incorrect. I talked politely to the person about it, after waiting so long at the table I got up and went to her, and she immediately got mad and said "I'm not going to deal with this!" I really wasn't trying to be a pain and I knew she was busy. I got frustrated because she wouldn't listen so I said forget and went to my room only to realize I had forgotten my newspaper. I went back down to get it. They must have thought I was back to complain again because here she was with her manager. They said I had screamed at her! I was so taken aback by that accusation I started to cry. I didn't even care about the incident any more. The sup said she would watch the tapes because they were recording. What?!?!? The other people behind the desk looked like they felt sorry for me. I was really stunned. Left a very bad memory for me of this otherwise lovely place. read more

Love this place! We stayed for a wedding and had the best time. We danced the night away and then had pizza and bowling "after hours". We had an awesome room with lots of character (like a Pinocchio above the toilet & a VHS of Bocceli...can you feel the Italian) for 100 bucks. You can't beat that. Plus for such a small town Perry has lots of flavor (Latino in particular)! read more

This is the kind of unique, themed hotel that you'd never expect to find in a place like Perry, Iowa. I was part of a larger group and stayed in the Central American room. To say I was completely blown away by the impeccable theming would be an understatement. My room was fairly small, but it was well designed and very efficient, not to mention incredibly beautiful to look at. The library is stocked with books by Iowa authors. It was very interesting to browse the selection. The restaurant is probably the finest in town (if you've been to Perry, you know that's not saying much). In fact, if this restaurant were in my hometown, it would still be one of the finer establishments. If you're looking for something different with serious attention to making it unique, then this is a stop you need to make. read more

My girlfriend and I tried to have a romantic getaway at Hotel Pattee but were very disappointed. There were so many problems with our stay that would make us never choose to stay here again. First, the hot tub was out-of-order for our entire trip. We asked the front desk staff (who were absent a lot) about it and they said that because the tub was so old they couldn't find parts. Also, the free Wi-Fi was not working the entire time. We saw people from the Internet company working on it for 2 days, but it never worked. Something that was a huge pain was the fact that we had to go down to the front desk EVERY time we had to get ice. Combined with the absence of the staff, this made our stay very frustrating. There was a ice machine in the basement, but it was inaccessible to guests, which was odd. When we got to our room, things got worse. The door to the room would stay open at least 1-2 minutes every time you opened the door. This made it a pain to leave the room. The comforter on the bed had brown and yellow stains on it. The TV in the room was less than 20 in, which made it very difficult to even watch TV. On top of this, there was a VHS player in the room. A VHS PLAYER! And the hotel had a "library" of tapes you could rent, but there were only about 30 tapes to choose from and they were crappy movies that no one would want to watch. Also in the rooms, there was no soap, conditioner, or lotion to use. Even though the elevator worked most of the time, there were a couple times where it wouldn't move. We did not use the bowling alley because it looked very run-down and unused. There are only 2 lanes. There was no radio or anything so it was dead silent. Finally, the restaurant was horrible. I will review that under David's Milwaukee Diner. I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy it was so bad. read more

From the time you drive up to the front of the hotel you know that you are in for a very special treat. Upon entering the grand lobby one is immediately in a different world of the rich and famous ! The entire staff at the hotel is extremely professional. The rooms and suites are all different and attention to every detail is what this hotel is all about. There is even a large spa and a two lane bowling alley in the basement. They use the finest of linens and bedding. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is all about good food and great food presentation and wonderful service. Why can't all hotels be operated in this manner ? Really cannot give enough praise to this hotel. As travelers from coast to coast this certainly is a crown jewel here in the Midwest ! Wonderful and professional and very friendly staff. Room Tip: Spend just a little more money and get a Suite ! read more

WOW, what a find. We have traveled all over the world and this place is one of the worlds gems. We were traveling from Arizona to Michigan and someone at one of the hotels we stopped at said we needed to check out Hotel Pattee while traveling through Iowa. The minute you step into the hotel lobby you feel like they were waiting for you to arrive. Every one and every thing was about service. Nick at the front desk couldn't be more friendly and knowledgeable of this fine old piece of history. After a nice dinner in David's Milwaukee Diner we went to the lower level for after dinner bowling. Yep, two lanes of bowling with automatic pin setters and electronic scoring. When ever we find ourselves withing 100 miles of the Hotel Pattee we will be checking in. read more

This is a lovely old hotel (built in 1913 and lovingly renovated by the new owners) Their motto is "A Destination Unto Itself" and I agree! It is gorgeous, amazing! The owners, although dealing with both a wedding and a family reunion the night we stayed, were genuinely concerned with and took the time to deal with our issue. I loved everything about it, from our beautifully appointed room to the on-site restaurant. TIP: You must call in to get your exact choice of room. There is no mechanism for doing so on-line. read more

I was looking forward to the cocktails and great food I had two years ago. When I checked in the lady was nice but I mentioned that the wonderful cafe seemed closed as well as the bar, closed for renovations, I said I was looking forward to the whirlpool and bowling, she only laughed a bit. Put us in the Russian Room with senior discount $140.12. I asked for ice, I had to bring the heavy glass bucket down to her. On my way I dropped by the whirlpool, it was dry. When I handed over the bucket I mentioned the whirlpool had no water. Then she told me it was closed for cleaning. My husband and I tried everything to cool the room including blocking the door open for the cool hall air. Finally called and the nice young man applogized, they had trouble with the air on the weekend, thought they had it fixed but was happy to help us get to the Pattee Suite, upgrade on them. Nice guy. Very nice room. We went to dinner, the big dining room has little atmosphere. I ordered a cocktail but it lacked what I had gotten a couple of years ago. I ordered the chicken pot pie because everyone said it was the best thing. Presentation was wonderful, oval casserol dish, huge puff pastry with a sprinkle of parsley on top, that was the last herb on the plate. The thick gravy had no flavor, little strings of chicken, the peas where still green, the thick carrots had a little crunch but I think the new chef should go to KFC to learn how to make this dish. If youre only going to put an ounce of chicken in, make it three big pieces that are savory not dry strings. I think their web site should have warned us about the construction. I think when checking in they should have lead with we are under construction, if you still want a room how about a discount. I thought we would miss the wonderful young couple that were such good caretakers/owners, just didnt know how much. Get a real chef! read more

My wife and I spent a lovely evening at this hotel after a week in the Black Hills and the Badlands. Stayed in the Bill Bell room. The hotel staff was very courteous and professional. We enjoyed cocktails in the library and dined in the restaurant afterwards. The food was top notch. Breakfast the next morning was also quite satisfying. We also had a very nice conversation with Denise Hartz, the owner, about some of the historical aspects of the hotel. Give this hotel a try. read more

went to Thanksgiving for lunch - got there are 11:00 - everything was cold. ham was a cheap ham with nothing done to it. the turkey was dry. the mashed potatoes, gravy, green been casserole - everything was COLD. not much in the way of salads. sure wasn't like it was at Thanksgiving a few years ago. won't be back there - drove 1/2 hour to get there - wasn't worth the trip!! read more
