Posthotel Rössli - Potato soup

This is my favorite place in Gstaad. I would say the menu is typical Swiss-German, but not so…read moretypical in preparation. I usually get the Tete de Veau / Kalbskopf. If you've ever eaten this dish anywhere else, it is usually a plate of mostly veal fat with very little flavor. At the Rossli it is much less fatty, and comes with this gravy boat of very finely cubed vegetables in a heavenly vinaigrette. Last night I had some veal dish off the daily specials menu, that the waitress described as from the calf/ankle of the calf. Whatever the cut was, it was low fat and beautifully tender. My wife had the kalbsleber which I tasted and was also delicious (and I not usually a fan of liver, well not cow liver anyway). What I am a big fan of when I'm in Switzerland is veal. I think we Americans have the best beefsteaks, but the Swiss have and prepare the best veal. The service here is top notch and very professional. It's been my experience that all the servers are fluent in English, French and German, but that is pretty much the case at all of the places in Gstaad. The menus are also printed in these 3 languages, except for the daily specials which are only listed in French and German. The servers also wear traditional uniforms you would expect at a Swiss landhaus in the old days. The chalet the Rossli is located in may actually be the oldest chalet in the village. Based on the name it was the original post office for the village, and is currently also a modest hotel. I've only ever eaten in the steubli, which I prefer over the formal dining room. The steubli is decorated with old skiing photos, deer antlers and local artifacts. I find it very charming. This place defines classic Swiss dining in a Landhaus. If you are in town during anything resembling the busy seasons; Christmas, February, and Summer, I would suggest reservations. The impression I have, is that this place is popular with those in the know. I've been going there for 13 years now and it's always good. Lastly, there's price. With the exchange rate being what it is the last few years, Switzerland is expensive, and Gstaad is expensive anyway, but I consider this place a very good value considering the quality of the food and impeccable service.

Very filling, I ordered the cheese toast with ham and egg. It is very good, but NOT like a grilled cheese. It comes out with one single thick bread coated in cheese and a fried egg and ham. It hit the spot!

As we begin our two-week journey exploring Switzerland, I fear this hotel will make the others pale…read morein comparison-easily one of my new favorites in our worldwide travels. We stayed two nights along with another couple in two spacious king rooms that shared a large wraparound patio with soaring Mountain View's. As a storied luxury property in swanky Gstaad, I'm sure they are used to privileged guests and celebrities yet we've never been greeted so warmly or made to feel so special. From the moment we were met at the train station for the 2-minute drive to the property literally sparkling in the sunshine and walked inside we were pampered. It felt as if every employee from the hotel was there to greet us from bell and front desk to excellent concierge, Olivier, to the general manager of the hotel. Such a WARM welcome and this level of service continued uninterrupted throughout our oh too short stay. Our spacious rooms were exceedingly quiet and located a bit of a hike past the conference center in a more recent wing with modern hotel rooms and fantastic up to date bathrooms. Like most of the hotels in alpine Switzerland there was no AC but opening the windows at night provided plenty of cooling despite the unusually warm (80s) early September weather. A sumptuous breakfast was included in our room rate that featured all the usual items plus a great à la carte options. We were a bit sad to leave after two nights but will plan to return at some future date for more pampering and to spend more time in the deluxe spa and indoor pool complex. Highly recommended.

The place is beautiful, especially the Thermal Oasis, that deserves 5 stars by itself. You will enjoy the 17 different facilities including beautifully decorated steam baths, saunas, jacuzzis... I also highly recommend the massages, with Swiss herbs and spices. You will enjoy an incredible moment there.

This hotel used to be a favourite for world travellers 15-20 years ago - until the manager at that…read moretime divorced his then lovely wife - who was graciously refined, charming and delightful. People would return year after year. Then stepped in this truly frightening she-devil. I have only encountered one other woman with an equally fiendish and malicious character in this region. Sadly, and as a result, this hotel has in the last 15-20 years deteriorated significantly. The minute one walks in to the hotel, one is met by a nasty, hostile woman with a sour face. Why the rotten toxic attitude in such a beautiful country? A black cloud hangs over this hotel and locals now know to stay away. Sad, because at one time, it really was a fantastic place to both stay at, and dine at. The food is banal and bland now, and overpriced. Much better food and accommodations can be found in the many restaurants and hotels that surround the area. The rosti is overly salted and the salad swimming in dressing. The curry is tasteless. The Italian Maitre D is very kind though so must give credit where credit is due. There is a very good wine selection. However, after being on the receiving end of sheer wickedness and hateful energy directed at me by a clearly unhappy, deeply troubled woman (after 20 years of our patronage), my partner and I decided to stop patronizing this establishment, and rather switch to the many other choices (excellent restaurants/accommodations) in the area where 'normalcy', sanity, human decency, humanity, quality, kindness and good food are to be found.

We could both…read moremove past how dingy and outdated the hotel was, we knew it was a good deal for a place as expensive as Gstaad. However, the woman who worked there made our experience truly awful. It started when my husband asked her for suggestions on where to rent a bike. She replied, shortly, "the train station". Later, I asked a man who worked there if he had another recommendation. At this point, the woman came bolting into the conversation saying "Just go to the train station!". I explained that we didn't expect her to have the answer of the best place to rent bikes, we were just looking at all of our options. The next morning, we went down to breakfast. I asked her for some coffee (patrons have to ask- it's not independent available) and she said OK and made it. We noticed that, as everyone else in the hotel came down to breakfast, she greeted them and offered them coffee. The day before at breakfast, she asked that we leave our used plates on their bar. So, on this day I cleaned up our table and brought the dishes to the bar. A few minutes later she came to the door of the dining room and YELLED at me across the room "Don't do that! Just leave your dishes!". Additionally, I asked her to fill up a large water bottle I had. She was unhelpful and suggested I do it in the sink. This woman, owner, employee, whatever, was nothing but rude towards my husband and I, often singling us out and making the hotel experience truly horrific. Don't ever go here, unless you hear they are under new management!
