Hôtel de Gruyères - Very sweet Swiss room

Looking out to rolling hills, cows, deer, biplanes, and the storybook-like views you can only find in Switzerland is incredible. And the bed was comfortable. You cannot beat the location. Nestled at the entrance to the medieval city, staying here allows you to both easily walk anywhere in the city and park your car in their lot right by your rooms. No lugging your briefcase over cobblestones to get to your hotel in the medieval city, and no driving to get to the medieval city. And you aren't sacrificing any beautiful architecture staying here - it's a great building. The restaurant is so good! We had a lot of fun with the raclette, and the ice cream and meringue dessert was huge but super fun. If I ever came back to Gruyeres, I would definitely stay here again. We had a great time!

Note that all menus in Gruyeres are extremely identical so good customer service is a great way to set them apart. During our three visits we tried a variety of wines, Cafe Vienna, the beef broth soup, fondue, raclette, meringue and double cream, liqueur soaked cherries with ice cream and double cream and the salad. One dish that set this eatery apart was their version of the Brazilian pan de queso with gruyere stuffed in the center (perfection!). You'll notice that this restaurant takes over two buildings across the street from one another with patio seating as well as indoor (two levels). We really appreciated that they allowed us to share the one serving size of both the fondue and raclette (ordering two portions is not only too much food but pricey as well).

They offer a small selection of rooms (I think they have 6 Doubles) - for a reasonable price. The rooms are clean and well equipped - nothing fancy but functional and situated right in the middle of the village. As mentioned before - you need to enjoy the Gruyere Cheese Fondue (moitié-moitié - half Gruyere half Vacherin Fribourgeois Cheese). You can get it everywhere in the village (I think all are good with this view lol). You can order some pickles and some potatoes as a side - standard you just use bread with the melted cheese but especially potatoes are working great too. I liked very much that they have some choice in half bottles - with the Cheese Fondue you typically drink a Fendat (White Wine) - I did like the Yvorne much better. And even when the fondue was quite heavy - don't forget to take a Meringues with the Gruyere Double cream (you can have a small portion too) - it is a MUST. Service is very friendly naturally in high season they are very stressed because it's busy all day. And by the way the Aliens are not fare ... So I love the village and I liked this place too. So we will come again.

So when in Gruyere, Switzerland, the thing to do is to have fondue. Gruyere is a tiny little town…read more You can literally walk from one end to the other in less than 5 minutes. The street is lined with tons of fondue restaurants so you can smell the pungent cheese the moment you walk into town. We ended up picking this place for our fondue experience. All the places here charge a lot for fondue. It's 26 swiss francs per person for just cheese and bread. If you want anything else to dip in the cheese, you have to pay quite a bit more. It is unlimited cheese but I will bow down to you if you can stomach more than one large serving that they give you. The cheese is indeed pungent. It's not like the fondue you can get in the states so don't expect Melting Pot style cheese fondue. This is in a class of its own. You may want to avoid this if you are sensitive to smell. They also have this other popular cheese dish where you get a block of cheese on the "Raclette" which melts the cheese from the top. You then scoop it with a knife. I didn't try it but got to see our neighboring table's. It looks really cool but the smell is even stronger than the fondue. They have other dishes too but you kind of have to try the cheese. The server was really nice and everyone speaks English.

Smack…read moredab in the middle of Gruyère, it probably gets all of its traffic from walk-ins that haven't done their research. Just check Trip Advisor and you'll see all the terrible reviews for the hotel and the restaurant. The service is terrible. I was told I can sit outside by a bartender. I sat around for 10 minutes waiting for someone to bring me a menu. I even asked for one, and at that point the server didn't even answer me, she just got the owner to talk to me. He tells me the table is for 4 people and I can't sit there. All of the tables in the restaurant are for 4 people. He points to one of those tables that seat 4 and told me to sit there. I said "but that's also a table for 4, why can't I sit here?" And he says "I'm the owner and this is my restaurant and I'm telling you you can't sit here." Wow, rude. He might as well have been swinging from the trees and beating on his chest. Great logic there; I can see that logic isn't his strong suit, and he gets his way using "because I'm the owner and this is my restaurant and I said so." I'm guessing he didn't want me to sit there because it was close to a good view and maybe he wanted to save it for a larger group. It wasn't even that good, it was the table with the closed window so the view was obstructed. That seemed like the perfect time to leave. I went to Cafe Restaurant des Remparts nearby where they also have a panoramic view, but the service is way friendlier. Glad I didn't stay at St-George of the Jungle's restaurant! His wait staff looked miserable. If that's how the owner treats customers ready to buy an overpriced fondu pot, I can't imagine how he treats his staff. By the looks on their faces, not very well. The washrooms are also disgusting. Small and stinky. Not good ventilation. The air is damp. You can smell everything that happened before you got in there, which isn't exactly the most appetizing. I would definitely avoid. There are better hotels to stay in in a more livable city like Lausanne. La Gruyère is awesome to spend a half day in, see the castle, eat and drink, and learn how they make cheese, but I wouldn't overnight there, but if you do want to overnight in Gruyère, I would say do not go to this restaurant's hotel. It's a 3-star that's overpriced due to its convenient location. Just go to Lausanne, it's close enough.
