Looking out to rolling hills, cows, deer, biplanes, and the storybook-like views you can only find in Switzerland is incredible. And the bed was comfortable. You cannot beat the location. Nestled at the entrance to the medieval city, staying here allows you to both easily walk anywhere in the city and park your car in their lot right by your rooms. No lugging your briefcase over cobblestones to get to your hotel in the medieval city, and no driving to get to the medieval city. And you aren't sacrificing any beautiful architecture staying here - it's a great building. The restaurant is so good! We had a lot of fun with the raclette, and the ice cream and meringue dessert was huge but super fun. If I ever came back to Gruyeres, I would definitely stay here again. We had a great time!

Note that all menus in Gruyeres are extremely identical so good customer service is a great way to set them apart. During our three visits we tried a variety of wines, Cafe Vienna, the beef broth soup, fondue, raclette, meringue and double cream, liqueur soaked cherries with ice cream and double cream and the salad. One dish that set this eatery apart was their version of the Brazilian pan de queso with gruyere stuffed in the center (perfection!). You'll notice that this restaurant takes over two buildings across the street from one another with patio seating as well as indoor (two levels). We really appreciated that they allowed us to share the one serving size of both the fondue and raclette (ordering two portions is not only too much food but pricey as well).

The rooms are great - not fancy - but spacious with good sized bathrooms. Breakfast was excellent and very relaxed. There's a very peaceful lounge area if you're into hanging out in the bad weather. And the restaurant, while a little on the hot side, is outstanding. Excellent food, wonderful service. Great hiking opportunities in the area. Don't miss the gondola rides - there are 4 of them. We stayed two nights along with another couple in two spacious king rooms that shared a large wraparound patio with soaring Mountain View's. As a storied luxury property in swanky Gstaad, I'm sure they are used to privileged guests and celebrities yet we've never been greeted so warmly or made to feel so special. From the moment we were met at the train station for the 2-minute drive to the property literally sparkling in the sunshine and walked inside we were pampered. It felt as if every employee from the hotel was there to greet us from bell and front desk to excellent concierge, Olivier, to the general manager of the hotel. Such a WARM welcome and this level of service continued uninterrupted throughout our oh too short stay. Our spacious rooms were exceedingly quiet and located a bit of a hike past the conference center in a more recent wing with modern hotel rooms and fantastic up to date bathrooms. Like most of the hotels in alpine Switzerland there was no AC but opening the windows at night provided plenty of cooling despite the unusually warm (80s) early September weather. A sumptuous breakfast was included in our room rate that featured all the usual items plus a great à la carte options. We were a bit sad to leave after two nights but will plan to return at some future date for more pampering and to spend more time in the deluxe spa and indoor pool complex. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Bernerhof for four nights with our entire family (10 adults, 4 children), and they were so accommodating. The breakfast spread is delicious and filling, the front desk staff is so friendly, and the location truly cannot be beat. We've traveled all over the world and the views from the Bernerhof hotel balcony are hands down the best. They're located in the center of town, just a short walk from the gondola up to Oeschinensee, and easy access to anywhere else in town, including the transit stops. Traveling overseas was a bit challenging for the little ones in our group, but the Bernerhof has a children's playroom and they were so so sweet to the children even when they were a little rambunctious. Staying at the Bernerhof felt like staying with family, just with really fancy and comfortable accommodations. They went above and beyond to make our stay in Kandersteg memorable and they made our micro wedding extra special with all of their thoughtful touches and customizations - our trip and wedding would not have been the same without them.
