The room we had overlooked a river. Front desk staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful (providing a map and some recommendations). The lobby lounge area was cozy and beautifully decorated for Christmas. Our room did have two twin beds that were actually separated from each other, sometimes hard to find in Europe. The room itself was not particularly spacious, especially the bathroom (which was about the size of a cruise ship bathroom). The bed was firm, but reasonably comfortable. The pillow was a large European style pillow, but needed a bit more firmness for neck support. The hotel does have an elevator, but it only goes up to the third floor. If your room is on the fourth floor, as ours was, you have to go up a final set of steps to your floor (but the front desk did ask us if we needed assistance with that). The hotel appeared to have an associated restaurant next to it, but we did not eat there to comment. The location and friendly staff definitely take the edges off the negatives. For those traveling by train, there is not close proximity to the station (so you'd need a taxi to the hotel). However, the hotels I stayed at in Germany that were close to the main train stations ended up being in much more shady neighborhoods--so lack of proximity may be one reason why the area felt so much safer for this hotel.

It had air conditioning which was nice on a warm day. Once your car was parked you can walk to everywhere. It's an old building updated nicely. The only downside is no parking but if you use the parking place they suggest then you do get a discount. Be prepared if you have a large vehicle trying to find a place. The parking spots are very small. I knew this in advance. The views, the people , the bed and the location makes it worth staying. I will be back.

However, that doesn't really diminish the hotel experience because the air is already cool and with open windows (no bugs!), A/C is not necessary. The bedroom was fairly large. Though the single beds were pushed together, they came with single-sized comforters. The room also contained two bedside tables, a writing desk and chair, a sofa, and a closet. The bathroom was good-sized too, however the shower was pretty narrow. I don't imagine it would be very accommodating to guests with Reubenesque figures. The wifi is not consistent throughout the hotel. It can only be accessed in the dining room (though barely) and lobby. There's also a playroom for younger kids and a beautiful garden outside. A smaller mountain trail that leads to a nearby local village can also be found in the back. Breakfast is available from 7am and consists of a wide array of breads, deli meats, sausages, cheese, patê, eggs, cereal, juices, and fresh fruits. Overall, a very good variety of breakfast foods; and very well-rounded. Staff is friendly. The owner works the reception is extremely accommodating. He also lives on-site. Though, don't try to contact him after 11pm -- he, understandably, gets grumpy cos he has to wake up at 6am every morning to work. Pro-Tip: If you go out and return late at night, the night entrance is on the right-hand side entrance. It'll lead straight to the kids' playroom. There's a sign, but it's not too prominently displayed and it's in German.

Her English was limited, but she was gracious and patient as I attempted to speak German, and was generous enough to tell me I did well. It added to the charm of the whole experience. Now, the food. The potatoes that came with the schnitzel were the best German potatoes I've ever had. The schnitzel itself was delicious, exactly what you'd hope for. The cheese spaetzle was a highlight as well, rich and satisfying. Plan on sharing it. The one miss was the pizza my sister-in-law ordered, which was fine but felt out of place. Stick to the German classics and you won't be disappointed. Would love to return if I ever make it back to Heidelberg.

You can't beat the location being right by the old bridge.

The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. Eric checked me in quickly and thanked me for being a Marriott Elite member. He took the time to offer me a few different upgrades. In the end I chose the King room, balcony with river view. I rarely have a vehicle, but this time I did have a rental car. Parking is 25 Euro per day in their underground, covered garage. The room was screaming for renovation. The often-used wood areas of the furnishings were all worn down. The green carpet - well, I do not think I need to say anything more about that! The bed was hard as a rock, but the sheets were of good cotton quality as were the feather pillows. Without those quality sheets, this bed would have been very uncomfortable, as I prefer a softer bed. The bathroom was dark, and the wall tile reminded me of being at grandma's house! Aside from the decorative items, the room was very clean. The balcony was absolutely wonderful as the day I visited the weather was beautiful. I spent a few hours sitting on that balcony getting some work done while enjoying the view of the river. This property has a club level lounge for elite members. It was open until 2300 daily and had an evening reception with wine and beer. The lounge also had a large outdoor deck, also with great views of the river. The lounge attendant was very attentive. The food offerings were a bit bland, but the wine was good! This property has a very nice restaurant in the lobby and an indoor pool is also available. This property really tries hard with the hotel it has. If the rooms were updated, I could easily give this property a 5-star rating. For now, I will be rating this hotel with 4 stars.

We were also upgraded in our room and were giving a large suite right above the entrance, which had amazing views of the water and old town Heidelberg. The room itself was quite large and had a full bedroom and lounge area and we really appreciated it. We also dined in the hotel restaurant for breakfast each morning and that too was lovely. They have a small gym behind the hotel, which has decent equipment and also great views of the city. This place is extremely walkable as well. You can walk out the door and be in old town or any of the famous sites in town in less than 10 minutes. Pricing is very fair for this level of quality hotel and I honestly would happily stay here again and would recommend to anyone visiting town to stay here as well. Thank you for a wonderful time!
