We booked a 3 night stay with friends prior to catching a Rhine cruise and were very pleased with Hotel D American travelers tend to have different expectations so understand this is Europe modern boutique hotel in every sense of the word. Rooms are typically smallish; we were glad we had upgraded to a junior suite. Again, not a 'suite' in the American sense but larger, and Room 605 was on the top floor with a lovely partial view of the river and a sweeping view of city surrounds, really awesome. Furnishing is upscale 'IKEA-ish, and designed with Swiss efficiency and practicality. The bed was amazing, so appreciated after 12 hours of travel from California. The bath was spacious and beautifully appointed. Bonus points for heated towel rack, rain shower, and L'Occitane Bath products (no hair conditioner, no face cloths). Conditioner was no biggie, I travel with my own, but face cloths were sorely missed. A couple of ticks off for no in room coffee making (room service is not a feature here), but there is a mini bar featuring wine and spirits, and Pringles (go figure!) for snacks. Tap water is crystal clear, but small drinking glasses necessitated a trip to Co-Op (a very cool market/deli a short walk) for 6 packs of water for room and day tripping. Let me emphasize that the location is directly across the street from the Rhine, unparalleled for walking to the Marketplatz, museums, and all places of interest. The bus and trolley system is modern and extensive - not user friendly unless you're Swiss - no English translations - but we figured it out eventually and the city is so beautiful getting lost is not a waste of time. Final comment on hotel front staff - so sweet and friendly and helpful, they made our stay even more pleasurable. Continental breakfast is available for 24chf, but there seems to be bakery cafes on every block, each more yummy than the last for breakfast selections and espresso and smoothies, so venture out.
