Our room at the Hotel Gotthard in Basel was a spotlessly clean and quiet room with modern Swiss decor. It was a very short walk from the train station, which is right across the street! The Gotthard is next to the Victoria hotel, and the Gotthard's sign is partly hidden.
I requested a quiet room facing the courtyard, away from the tram that runs in front of the hotel, and they gave us a very quiet room facing the back. If you do get a room in front facing the trams, note that the rooms do have triple glazed windows. I booked directly through the hotel's website.
Breakfast: Our room rate included an organic breakfast with a nice variety. We had scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, mustard, preserves, breads, butters including organic cow butter and sheep butter. They order the whole cheese and slice it themselves, which is why the cheese is so fresh. Breakfast also included boiled eggs, euro style sliced meats, potatoes, fresh fruits, cereals, dry fruits, yogurts, juices, good espresso drinks and hot tea.
Such an accommodating and welcoming lady welcomed us to the breakfast room! She brought out new scrambled eggs just for us to the buffet. She thoughtfully allowed us plenty of time for seconds before clearing the buffet at the end of breakfast.
The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. I believe it was the manager that we spoke to, and he was very knowledgeable. This hotel is family owned and family run, which is one of the reasons that I chose it. It is VERY clean, and extremely convenient to the Basel train station.
We really enjoyed our 1-night stopover in Basel, and next time we may spend 2 nights in Basel, which is a charming city. As a hotel guest, you get a free pass for transportation in Basel, including the convenient trams, so it's easy to visit the city. I'll definitely choose the Hotel Gotthard Basel on my next visit to Basel.
Keep in mind that this hotel is very convenient to the train station, but it's not located in the most charming area of Basel. But for a 1-night stay, I believe it's best to sleep near the train station, and take the free trams to visit the charming old town area of Basel. We walked to dinner near the Hotel Gotthard Basel, and then took the tram into the city to see the old town on the river. read more
