Had a fairly pleasant 4 night stay here in October 2017. I deliberately chose the Termini area so we could take the Leonardo Express to and from the airport, and we also took the train to Florence for a few days. It was very convenient for that; we were able to walk to and from Termini with our luggage. The area is a bit dirty, but we never felt unsafe, even walking around at night or very early in the morning.
We arrived in the morning and had to store our luggage because our room was not ready yet. We were told to return at 1pm, as the guests in our room hadn't even checked out yet. We spent the morning sight seeing in a bit of a jet lagged stupor. We were exhausted when we finally returned to the hotel at 1pm, and then were told that the elevator was broken, and we'd have to walk up the 5 flights of stairs to our room. The staffer who showed us to our room used a freight elevator to bring our bags up.
I think there must have been something lost in translation here, because later when I asked at the front desk if the elevator was still broken, they said the elevator wasn't broken. It's an ancient elevator and sometimes someone will leave a door open on one of the floors, and then it won't work. But the staffer who brought our bags up may have used the freight elevator simply because the elevator for guests is tiny, and the 3 of us plus our bags would not have fit.
Anyway, our room was clean and fairly nice, altho bed was uncomfortable and sagged in the middle. The A/C had been turned off, which we expected in October, and only the fan worked. There's a sensor in the windows and if you have a window open the heat/AC unit won't work at all. The windows did a good job of blocking out traffic noise. However, with the windows closed and just the fan on, our room got stuffy at night. We'd wake up a few times a night and one of us would have to open the window to cool off the room. It's loud with that window open and we'd have to close it in order to sleep.
There's a vent in the door to the room, and this allows a nice breeze to come in from the window, but it also let in noise from the hallway. If someone was speaking in a normal voice in the hallway, it was startlingly loud in our room. The maid staff started rolling carts in the halls around 6am and this woke us up every morning. I would probably not stay in this hotel again for this reason.
Our final night at Hotel Canada was in a different room. This one was very near the elevator, it was a smoking room that had glass doors that opened onto a small terrace overlooking an inner courtyard. The smoking part of this concerned us, but we did not smell any smoke in the room itself. The courtyard was fairly quiet and we were able to keep the outside doors open all night to let in a nice breeze. Despite being closer to the elevator, this room was much quieter than the first. There are doors around the elevator that are closed at night, so we were closed off in a small area with just 2 other rooms, and didn't have people rolling luggage past our room, or the noise of maid carts and such.
The wifi worked well. The bed in the second room was much nicer than the one in our first room. There wasn't a refrigerator in the rooms, but you can get a bucket of ice from the bar on the lobby level. There's a PAM grocery store nearby, and a number of restaurants. Breakfast at the hotel was pretty good - muesli, yogurt, fruit, eggs, fresh bread.
It was a fairly pleasant stay overall, and we might consider this hotel again if we could ensure a quiet room like the second (smoking) room that we had. read more
