This place is an institution for mountaineers. It is very basic (no frills) but clean & affordable in this otherwise expensive ski resort. Literally steps away from the railway station, Gornergrat station and eBus stop; less than 10 minute walk to the Sunnegga station.
Speaking of no frills - towel rental and bed liners are CHF 5, each.
Communal kitchen is spotless (besides cleaning lady, courteous guests clean up behind themselves) and unbelievably well-equipped - fondue pots & lamps, raclette oven, stove top coffee makers, silverware, pots, pans, dishes, etc.
Plenty of refrigerator space, washer & dryer on site and strong wifi signal were greatly appreciated.
The staff really helped me out on a couple of issues - I really thank Katerina for going way beyond the call of duty on an issue (nothing to do with the hotel) that came up.
For what it's worth - a couple of hints:
* brochure racks in the lobbies of "luxury" hotels have 15% discount coupons for ski rentals (unfortunately the Hotel Bahnhof didn't have any of these around).
* Denner discount, which is on the other side of the street, about 200 meters in the opposite direction of the Matterhorn has the lowest prices on groceries and booze. read more
