    Chicken Curry

We loved staying here 30 years ago and visited again for lunch today. The curry was different in style than we are used to but was good. The Alpine Rosti was great. The hamburger was ok.

Waking up to those mountain views is a dream, and the convenience of being right in Mürren makes exploring the area super easy. That said, the front desk experience left something to be desired. The woman working during our stay was noticeably curt, and even simple requests (like borrowing a pen or asking about hotel logistics) felt like a major inconvenience. It didn't ruin the trip by any means, but it did put a damper on the overall hospitality experience.

I would suggest getting a room with a view as on a clear day the view from your hotel room cannot be beat. Each day our stay included breakfast which started promptly at 7 a.m. The breakfast is a buffet and is very good. They have a variety of breads, eggs, sausage, bacon yogurt,, and fruit. It also includes your choice of coffee drink. We tried the half board one night and I would have to say it was just ok. Nothing special. One thing I liked about hotel is that they have a golf cart and took our luggage down to the train station for us in the morning. Overall, I would recommend the hotel. It is simple, the rooms are small but fine, and the breakfast is very good.

After a moderate mountainside hike from Mürren we followed the signs, little yellow ones that mimic the Swiss hiking signs, to Pension. As soon as you step into the back patio you are blown away at the setting. For us (mid-September) the plants were lush, the sun was shinning, and the temps were perfect - all made for an incredible time. Find yourself a little table and grab a brew from the bar inside (which in-and-of itself was fantastically old school tavern/inn). If you're hungry they have brats and kraut served outside. Wonderful! Order a beer, pay in cash (trust me, it just feels more fun), and enjoy a beer in the perfect spot in Jungfraur region.

The back deck has a wonderful view of the mountains as you enjoy your breakfast, lunch and dinner. The owners are so nice, the food is home cooked and they brew and excellent dark beer! The Pension is just a 30-45 minute beautiful walk to Murren or a quick ride up the lift. All around you can enjoy wonderful eating and some of the most scenic hikes in Switzerland. This place has shared bathrooms and large bedrooms. Great for hikers, skiers, and tourists. I would highly recommend this cozy and beautiful hotel for anyone!

While it's a "hotel" it felt more like a very high quality, homey, and personable BnB. We booked the suite (would've fit 2 adults and 2 kids) because we decided last minute (3 days) to do an ad hoc trip to Murren due to great recommendations from friends and coworkers. It was a bit pricy but we bit the bullet because it was just so highly rated. First, the staff at the hotel were just so incredibly nice and friendly! She noticed we were only 2 people and offered to just lock the door to the room with the bunk beds and give us a cheaper rate! She also walked us through what was in the area, and gave us great trail recommendations (we went on the one she suggested and it was exactly what we were looking for). The room itself (at least the suite) looked like an apartment - when you enter there's a small hallway with a bathroom on the right, a few steps later the main bedroom is on the left, with a second bedroom with what I assume are the bunk bed on the right (we couldn't confirm since it was locked). Everything was beautifully decorated, pristine, spacious and just perfect. Connected to the master bedroom is a small balcony - and WOW! The views were absolutely spectacular. It felt unreal - from the trees, to the vast mountains in the distance that varied from green terrains to snowy white. There's also a small restaurant downstairs ran by the same owners as the hotel serving homemade Swiss food that was easily the best restaurant food we've had this entire trip (but that's for another review :P). They also served continental breakfast which was a blend of amazing pastries, fresh fruits, juices, cured meats, cereals and more. I love love LOVE this place and only wish we could've stayed longer. If you're in Murren this is definitely the place to stay at!

We found out after our arrival that this appears to attract almost exclusively readers of Rick Steve's guides (admittedly this is how we found out about it, too). However, it turns out this demographic is largely retired people. While one couple our age was there, meals were shared with a group who had been making an annual pilgrimage since retirement and an Australian couple just passing through. Tim did a great job communicating the possibility that dinner would not be cooked if Walter (the proprietor) didn't feel well or not enough people requested it, so it was no surprise when we needed to find our own meal at the pension down the street on the first night. Tim also let us rent hiking poles (which turned out to be essential) very cheaply, and while we ended up on a bit of an ambitious hike considering our fitness level, we felt very prepared with Tim's advice and the map he drew. There were no private rooms when we booked, but Tim let us take two beds in the quad room, which he kindly pushed together. No one rented the other two beds, but I wasn't sure whether Tim purposefully blocked them off for us or they just weren't filled. Either way, the view from the balcony was beautiful! The cows across the street wore bells that sounded like wind chimes, so for us city folk it was a happy medium between mountain quiet and street noise. There are about 3-5 other B&B/pension/hostel-type establishments in the village part of Gimmelwald. Hotel Mittaghorn is a 5-minute walk uphill beyond the village (or 10-15 with luggage taking the longer but paved and less steep route). The entire village consists of about 20 buildings: 3-5 B&B/pension/hostels, and then a bunch of cottages and barns. I'd return to Gimmelwald and Hotel Mittaghorn but I might split up my stay to see what the other places in the village are like.
