The yoga itself and the teacher are great! However fully enjoying the experience is hindered by what seems to be a no cap on number of people/fit as many bodies in the room as possible. It's very uncomfortable to be so squeezed in and so close to your neighbor that it's hard to do some poses. Also when you're sweating profusely no one wants to be that close together. Especially for $26 a class I expect to have space. Not show up and have to ask people to squeeze together their mats because there doesn't seem to be room for us even though we booked in advance? Also it seems that many people crammed in a room like that has to be against fire code. It is really frustrating that it seems they don't manage the amount of people who sign up for the classes or put a cap on it. Like we easily couldn't not had a spot and we signed up/paid in advance. Please Hot Yoga put a lower cap on classes so we can better enjoy the experience! read more

A Hot Yoga Vinyasa session is a perfect way to detoxify (not that I imbibe intoxicants [especially not intentionally like vehicular fumes, smoke from passersby, etc.]) and improve one's being (very nice before traveling again). I cannot speak highly enough of this studio. When I moved here two years ago I went around to a couple of the yoga studios around and Hot Yoga Cville won me over in a heart beat, from their super friendly instructors to the lavender scented cold towels at the end of class (pre-COVID). They have a wide variety of class from early morning to later in the evening. Once you take a couple is ole classes you'll learn which instructors are harder and faster, but all are so amazing and kind. Even though I moved away from Charlottesville, I always enjoy coming back here and taking yoga classes. They are running a special intro offer that is $39 for 2 weeks of unlimited yoga - a great deal! Today was my first back in a while, and the instructor Amy was kind, helpful. and understanding. After the class, I got a text reminding me to drink water today and welcoming me back. The online system makes things so easier. Everything can be paid for online, you can register for classes online, and you get reminder texts for the classes that you sign up for. They made everything a breeze! I love how everything in this studio is super clean, especially during COVID. Sometimes hot yoga studios can reek of sweat, but Hot Yoga Charlottesville was clean, organized and the mats were spaced out. Everyone in the class was supportive and the energy in the room was amazing. You could tell there were a lot of repeat customers which is always a great sign. Really cool place. Tried it out. Went with a friend. We went 3 times. Twice to the 60 min hot vinyassa and once to the 90 min bikram class. Chosen purely due to what fit in our schedules. One of the vinyassa classes was in the small room. We had 14 people in there. Tight as sardines but despite my initial thoughts about leaving, I stayed. So glad I did. I love Hot Yoga Charlottesville! I have been to a lot of studios in my day, and each of the instructors has a special talent that really makes you feel like you are getting the most out of your practice. I originally started going after recommendations from friends and purchasing a great Living Social deal. Now, I have paid for drop-in classes, and I love that they offer a discount for teachers, students, and military. They offer a great deal on their intro month, and they also ran special discounts for a summer classes package. I have only attended the 26 & 2 [Bikram] classes, and they have really allowed me to improve my breathing, form, and overall practice. I used to be a vinyasa junkie, so I would eventually like to check out the hot vinyasa as well. I usually attend early classes with Sara Zia, and she is awesome! I love when she brings a reflection for the class. I was lucky enough to attend class with the owner, Lizzie Clark, and she is just a dynamite instructor! Even in a packed room, she gave everyone individual feedback and added a really fun vibe to the room! I always look forward to the icy washcloth in my final savasana! So full of gratitude for Hot Yoga Charlottesville and definitely recommend it to everyone. I had been out of practice for a few years but wanted to try to get back into it so I did the new client special of $45 for one month of classes (which is a great deal!) and I am so glad I did! All the teachers here are great but I want to give a special shoutout to Sarah M because her positive attitude kept me smiling for hours after class ended and to Diane for her super motivational vibes and awesome instruction. Keep in mind that the classes are all heated (except for maybe yin on Sunday night) so come prepared with water and a towel and be gentle with yourself/know your limits. 115 degrees is not healthy. Asked before class and was assured it would be 105 and 40% Humidity. It was 110 not even 1/2 way through class, 5 students were sitting through postures, even the instructor was sitting. read more

I really like this studio. The instructors are super welcoming and always kindly answer a question after class if you need clarification about form. This studio isn't super hands on and they rarely make physical corrections. It's more of a "eye contact with a shout out" kind of deal, but not in a belittling way. If you're brand spanking new, stay in front and let the instructor know. I dragged my husband with me once and they were very patient with him and provided a lot of guidance. Yes, it has carpet. All bikram studios that I've been to (4 in my life) have had carpet and kind of smell like an old gym sock. Par for the course. The cold towels at the end are heavenly. read more

I have tried this studio twice now hoping the second time would be better than my first awful experience. I will never step foot into this studio again. The first experience several years ago, I purchased a week long pass. I am overweight and was fat shamed by the instructors and other guests of the studio. It was very debilitating and I only went a couple days due to how they made me feel about myself. Recently, I noticed they had a groupon. I took advantage of it, regrettably. Definitely time and money I can not get back. Once again, not only are the classes so packed that my mat was within 1.5 feet of my neighbor, but once again I was fat shamed. There are a plethora of other studios in town that I have tried and can not wait to rejoin. If you like classes that are so packed you can not move, and if you are skinny then maybe this is the studio for you. I for one had an excruciatingly difficult experience. read more

I came here for three yoga classes, two vinyasa and one bikram, and decided not to go here ever again. I am a little bit surprised to see all of the positive reviews. Yes, my classes were standard yoga classes, however the main room is carpeted and after just a few minutes, the whole classroom WREAKS. And it's even worse when things continue to heat up and you move to floor work, where you are closer to the smelly carpet. Additionally, I did not find this studio and the teachers I was with particularly uplifting or kind. All in all, this is just not the studio for me. read more

This studio is fine, but I've been to better studios. The flooring in the larger hot room is carpet which is a turn off for me in my practice. The first time I went in, the smell of the carpet from the sweat was a big distractor. Additionally, I didn't like the lighting much in the room. During the day, light from outside was too harsh, and at night, the use of fluorescent lighting was harsh as well. All these distractors made it difficult for me to relax the first time I took a class. The second time, you sort of get used to what I considered to be huge distractors. The third time I took a class here during my trial week, I signed up for a hot vinyasa class. We were in this smaller room that barely fit ten people on their mats. I didn't like that I was so close to other people in the room. I was worried that I might accidentally nudge someone behind or beside me. Other than that, I really enjoyed this class. The room had wood flooring and there was music in the background. The teacher was great! I really liked that she helped with alignments and was very clear with her instructions.I felt like I was getting a better workout in this class than in the hot series. This studio is fair, but I have had better luck at other studios in my experience. I should add that this is the first hot yoga studio I've been to in Charlottesville. I'm not sure how this studio compares to others in this area. I'm comparing this studio to others I've been to in Virginia Beach/Chesapeake. Each studio has it's own style. read more

I love yoga. It is such a relaxing way to release strees and build up positive energy. This studio was so beyond dissapointing, that I was turned off from my practive for over six months. The facilities are disgusting. Who wants to do hot yoga in a carpeted room? Where it feels as if there is mold growing beneath your feet. Its absolutely disgusting. One instructor in particular was beyond aggressive and anything but friendly. In fact, she was so rude, that her bad vibes never made me want to come back. Dont ever waster your money and go here. Trust me, you can get a better workout from home. Not worth a dime. And there should be some sort of sanitary inspection because it really is appaling. If i could give negative stars I would. I went to my first ever yoga class here. It was bikram and I was immediately hooked. So was my husband. After the 90 minutes they give you this fantastic cold towel which feels amazing! If you have to choose pay for the intro month instead of the intro week. $70 for unlimited classes for a month that make you feel relaxed afterwards is well worth it. I also tried the vinyasa class and was disappointed that they don't give a cold towel after that class. Vinyasa was a little overwhelming for someone who has never done yoga. I have practiced many different kinds of yoga in several studios around Charlottesville over the years, and this is by far my favorite studio and group of teachers. It's a true gem. Lizzie, the owner, is as warm and welcoming a presence as you will ever come across. Lizzie and the rest of the Hot Yoga teachers make their students feel like they've just walked into their second home, whether it's their first class at the studio or their hundredth -- and whether the student is sixteen or sixty-five. At first I was intimidated by the heat, but have found that it is incredibly cleansing and revitalizing and allows me to move further into the meditative nature of this vigorous practice. (Also it makes the cool, lavender-scented cleansing cloth given to students at the end of class feel like the most indulgent, well-earned spa treatment on earth!) Completed my first Bikram Yoga session. It was really intense, and awesome. It was a physical and emotional challenge, but so rewarding. The room was really nice and the staff was very professional. I can totally see how this could become a lifestyle. A word on Bikram - it is 90 minutes, and, yeah, it's hot. Drink 3 times as much water as you need and get electrolytes, you'll lose a lot. I sometimes 'shop' around with other studios and see who is teaching before I go yet at Hot Yoga, I never look as I know how well they have been trained and vetted. The instructors are wonderful, and the spacious locker room and shower facilities are awesome (my last studio did not have showers at all), and they offer a pretty good spread of Bikram and Vinyasa style classes at a variety of times throughout the day. I wish they offered more Vinyasa classes as that is the style I came to prefer before moving out here, but this last schedule update was a fantastic improvement. They also have a great system of mat storage that allows you to leave your mat in the studio between practices, and they clean it for you! The student discounts and unlimited memberships are also a great bargain if you're on a tight budget. The only thing I would change is to put hardwood floors in the main room, the carpet is a little off-putting. I am so glad I found this studio and plan to make it my "yoga home" for the duration of my time here in C'ville. read more

Since this studio's move to its new home and the expanded class offerings it has become more dynamic than any of us who frequent it could've imagined! It's been repeatedly voted best yoga studio in C-ville Weekly's Best of Charlottesville due to owner Lizzie's infectious, passion for yoga, the friendly, down-to-earth, supportive staff and the overall good vibes in the lobby and in the hot room. I've been taking Bikram hot yoga classes at this studio since 2008, sometimes only 4x a month, other times, practicing toward and completing a 30-day personal challenge. It's here I learned to be comfortable practicing and now prefer yoga without props, resisting the urge to wipe away sweat, and in accepting how different my body is each day. I've made it a point to visit other studios when traveling, (Burlington, VT, Baltimore, MD, several in NoVa, Greensboro, NC) and HYCharlottesville rates high with me for being a very friendly, inclusive studio. I have yet to take a hot or power vinyasa class, but they're a boon to the studio and boosted overall class attendance. Best features to me? Chilled lavender-scented towels distributed at final savasana, 3 showers in ladies locker room, some instructors walk on feet (awesome toes-on-feet massages!), the clapping for new students finishing their fist Bikram class and the simple fact that I am always genuinely thanked for coming to -- and making it through -- class makes me always want to go back. read more

It's been voted the best yoga studio in Charlottesville for about a million years in a row, so there's obviously lots of people who love this place. The owner, Lizzie, loves what she does, and she seems to genuinely love each and every single customer, too. The people and the vibe is super positive without being annoyingly fake-spiritual and I like that each of the teachers has a slightly different style - it keeps things interesting. I did not take any of the Bikram classes, so I cannot review those, but the 4 Hot Vinyasa classes I took were great. The 8am classes are a perfect way to get your day started (and validated 2 hour parking in the garage!) I took classes with Amy, Anne, and Monica. I loved all the adjustments/tips that the instructors gave. All very helpful in expressing the poses more fully. Monica's class was excellent! Since there were only 2 of us that day, we did a lot of talking about the Bandhas and grounding ourselves, strengthening our lower bodies. It was phenomenal. I loved that we got a "mini-lesson." I've never done a flow like the one we did that day. I learned a lot. I'm sad that I don't live in Charlottesville so I can go more often. It can be hard to find a hot yoga place that isn't Bikram. Yes, there is carpet on the floor, and yes, the smell is shocking at first. But honestly, by the end of class you don't even notice. You're probably contributing to it anyway! I've lived in this town for 12 years and tried all of the yoga-- this is the best spot! The teachers are all wonderful and supportive and not too over-the-top yogi-- they have really created a sense of fun and community at their studio. The facility is bright and clean and the hot room is reliably hot. Plenty of storage space for your stuff and the shower line moves quickly. Yes, the "small room" is quite small but they make it work and are starting to offer the majority of their classes in the larger room which has plenty of space, even if you run in at the last second to a crowded class. My only hesitation in giving it 5 stars is that it is pricier than I'd like if you're not a student, but ultimately worth fitting in to your budget. read more
