Buckle up...in the pantheon of locals/dive bars this joint could be anywhere USA. But for the purposes of this review it's in Pittsfield, Ma. In town for a ski race (Pittsfield was the 1/2 way point between) I stayed at a no tell motel and this place was within shouting distance. The ambiance is...amazing. A shellacked trout hanging over a pic of a horse (met the artist), a mini version of the leg lamp from Xmas story, more pats memorabilia then bellichecks house. And clearly the epicenter of keno (I won 70 bucks). Au ordered my usual Manhattan and the barkeep struggled a bit but made a giant fishbowl, fish not included. As I perused the menu I had to try a hot dog obviously. It was 1 of those tiny dogs that I could easily have dusted off a dozen. I had 1 and it was fantastic. Great little snappy dog w a really good meat sauce and a soft roll. The regular menu looked good and the specials menu was special! Lots of steaks and meats. I asked about the clam chowder. She said hard pass so French onion. Tasty. Then I got a black diamond sirloin which is some sorta teriyaki induced syrup I remembered from my childhood. Cooked a bit over mid rare and not the next cut of meat but for the price, tres bien. Got a baked and creamed fucking corn! Which was really really really good. This place isn't getting 4 stars for the food. Or the atmosphere. Of the bartender. Or the keno. But combined this place is 4 stars worthy. Don't miss it. Go here now. read more

Hot Dog Ranch was better than i expected. First, it is surprisingly bigger than i expected from looking at it on the street. The fun signs and sports items really were a bonus. The menu was also much larger than i expected. The garlicy hot dogs are tasty -- not quite New York Kosher, but good. What makes it better is that you don't have to depend on the hot dogs. My daughter got a tasty mac and cheese that she described as creamy and filling. You get to choose items to put in the mac, including hot dogs if you want. I fooled myself by ordering a spinach salad with hot dogs so that i could pretend that my dinner was healthy. The spinach and salad items were fresh and crispy. I think i like hot dog ranch better than the other place. Give it a go. read more

It doesn't look like much from the outside but it's pretty big inside, separate bar and tables. We grabbed a table and got a few of the "famous baby hot dogs" with all the toppings. They were tasty and the toppings added to the taste. I think we got the mac & cheese bites which were good too. On the recommendation of "Tall Paul" we stopped at the Hot Dog Ranch for food. Immediately upon walking in, we noticed every single person in this establishment is morbidly obese. I asked a passing waitress where I could place an order for takeout, and she directed us towards the side part of the restaurant, by the kitchen, where they have an area designated just for take out orders. The menu is your typical variety of "Make America Great Again" fried foods. Prices aren't cheap but also not ridiculous. $10 minimum for credit card orders, and an ATM on site. The cranky female who was working the takeout counter gave us all kinds of attitude (like we were bothering her) when we placed our take-out order. Another female employee was at least friendly and smiled a lot. We placed our order: French fries, cheesy tots, tuna sandwich, and mini hotdogs. The French fries are over cooked and desperately needed salt. The cheese tots were underwhelming. Tuna sandwich was bland and unimpressive. Hot dogs were standard, nothing fantastic as the name of the establishment would imply. Order total was $14. Overall, just "meh". Would not come back again. read more

Messed up our takeout order - after getting home I had to drive I had to drive all the way back to pick up the other two items - and I didn't even receive as much as an apology. Really poor customer service, and they didn't include a receipt either time. Left a bad taste in my mouth before we even started our meal... but the food was decent, baby dogs were tasty but be warned that they're small portions and more of a snack than a meal. The food here is what you would expect. The service at the bar is always great. My experience with take out, particularly dealing with the kitchen staff always seems to reach a new level of unpleasantry. Simple put, the kitchen staff has some of the most miserable people on earth. You will never hear a thank you, you will never get a smile. What you will get is stark, short, attitude filled questions and demands. This is not because they are busy, this is highly refined behavior that is purposely present to ruin any chance of a coin dropping into that tip cup. Seriously, don't put out a tip cup and then negative in such a nasty manner! I just almost called to complain; stopping me was the reality that these people were all the owners could find, or worse yet, the owners encourage the lack of friendliness and manners. Meh...it was ok. My friend is from here and had to take us here for the local staple experience. I like my hot dogs grilled..so I may be biased. The hot dogs are soft and rubbery and to me, felt undercooked. I am gluten free so tried to break mine apart instead of bite it like you would if it were in a bun. It didn't budge I had to dig my thumb nail in it. Then I still had to bite it off. It was soft and mushy and rubbery at the same time. Def not my style. It has to be something like White Castle or krystlal that is steamed and I dislike. Luckily I ordered a burger and my friend ordered a chicken sandwich as well. Both were okay. The restaurant is a tad warn down, but it was nice that the takeout area was separate from the sit down side. The takeout area had great staff and the dogs here were tasty. Personally the sauce here isn't my favorite, but I liked the dog and bun. Overall, not a bad dog or restaurant, but the place could be a bit updated. What an odd but interesting little place. In theory and potential, the hot dog ranch could be a 3 star, but unfortunately the food in current state and experience is 2 star. The baby hot dogs were a bit hard, but had a nice bun. The burgers tasted like the were charcoal grilled with lighter fluid and burnt. The "hot dog sauce" is pretty interesting, like a coney sauce but with a flavor in it that I just can't pinpoint. The fries are standard food service fries with canned nacho cheese. We moved out of the area 5 years ago. At 3,000 miles, the Hot Dog Ranch is no longer within walking distance to our home. But they are still the only Berkshire culinary treat that I absolutely crave. Sure, there are a few new shops and restaurants in the area. But nothing that really got us excited during our last trip. Except for these hot dogs. I dream of opening up a 'sister' hot dog ranch in the Portland area. Add some good microbrews and you have an almost instant success. The baby hot dogs are hard to describe to someone that did not grow up in the area. They are like a sweeter miniature version of a coney island dog. The sauce blends perfectly with the fresh snap of the dog and the steamed bun. At just over a buck a piece they can either serve as a great meal or a quick snack. I miss them already. read more

I recently moved back home and this was the first place I wanted to eat. No questions asked. There is a good rivalry between HDR (Hot Dog Ranch) and Teo's. HDR takes the cake. 1) When you bite into a hotdog it's not supposed to be rubbery as such as you find at Teo's. HDR has a pop when your teeth puncture the casing of the hotdog which tells me it was cooked well and carefully. 2) The rolls. Well the rolls are pretty much the same for both places. Steamed soft rolls cut deep enough to fit the hot dogs and mounds of toppings however the HDR rolls are a little bigger. (More value for your $ if you ask me). 3) The toppings. Personally I always get an even # of hot dogs. 6-8-10 if I'm feeling starving. My rule... 50/50 split. One have get everything (Sauce, Mustard Onions), the other half gets KMR (Ketchup, Mustard, Relish). I like to alternate them. The biggest debate is who has the better sauce. Hands down I've gotta give it to HDR over Teos. For one they put more on the hot dogs than Teos does. HDR isn't shy with whatever toppings you want and I feel that's important. At the price per dog (which I'll get into next) I want a lot of savory sauce on my hotdogs. They don't overkill the onions and the mustard is just right. You can't really mess up Ketchup or Relish so I'll leave those out. 4) The price: 1.20 per dog has become steep. However I understand that it's just inflation due to rising operating costs. They are the same as Teo's so not much competition. All goes back to getting your value and at HDR I feel my money goes further. Better toppings, better dogs and better experience 5) HDR takes the cake with overall appearance. While Teo's is in an industrial zone, HDR is in the downtown area. They both see a lot of business and I feel that HDR is a lot more cleanly. I feel the lighter wood makes it a more inviting experience for dining in as to Teo's dark wood. I also look at the bars. The bars are comparable but Teo's is more sports styled. 6 T.V's make it a great bar for a game at the HDR. (Owner is a big Sox, Pats,Celtics fan) so memorabilia is ample. Service is fast and free refills are nice for drinks on soda. One HUGE item that stands out is that HDR has a map of the USA so you can pin where you came from if you moved out of the area or are in Pittsfield for the first time. Definitely leave a pin if you are from out of area, I know I like to look at it. 6) One important note if you made it this far is that HDR doesn't accept cards. BRING CASH! My 8 dogs and 1 soda cost 12.10 after tax and 14 after tip. Definitely worth it! read more

Well. Things have changed since our last visit. We come up to visit the grandkids from Richmond every 6 months. Food was good. But the lady waiting tables.... Well.... She didnt pay attention to anyone's drink refill, at our tablwe or any other. Asked for hot sauce. Never brought. Asked for a simple lemon in my diet coke. Nope. It was time to make the comparison on who has the better wiener in the Berkshires. The Ranch is a bar that you can eat in or they have a nice takeout area that is not inside the bar. The prices for a wiener are $1.20 each. The bar is very clean inside with Sports memorabilia on the walls. They serve the same dog and steamed bun as the other place in town. The dog and bun were very hot and had a good snap. The difference came down to the sauce. The sauce here at the Ranch was much stronger than I had at Teos.
