It was previously one of West End's numerous Vietnamese bakeries, and while it remains a bakery the new owners seem to be going for more of an up-market French boulangerie vibe. I ordered a filled baguette and a takeaway Di Bella coffee. The delivery of the baguette was instantaneous and while I waited for my coffee I didn't stand on ceremony, biting into the baguette and assessing their work. The bread itself was quite good, with a slight glaze to the crust and a pleasantly chewy inner. The toppings - chicken and avocado - fairly well-executed for a simple combination. The coffee however took too long to arrive, causing me concern about whether I'd be late for my appointment. What should for an experienced barista take 1-2 minutes tops took more like 4-5. Even worse, when the coffee arrived, it was insipid and milky, leading me to think the maker either didn't dose enough coffee into the group-head or used an insufficient one-shot for the large cup. Either way, it was a deflating first coffee for the day. The price also seemed a bit excessive at close to $12 for the coffee and baguette. Considering I could get a tasty roll significantly cheaper at one of the several Vietnamese bakeries in the neighbourhood, if I go back here it will probably be to buy bread for home use.

There are many flavours to choose from; more traditional ones like chocolate and some fancier varieties such as marble, each of which has a chocolate seashell perched on the carefully iced top. I absolutely love seashells but when it comes to cupcakes I believe it's the original and the best, so I chose a vanilla flavoured one. I have to say I was disappointed. The base was delicious and exactly what I would expect of a cupcake, even if it was a little heavy, but the icing was not. The main reason I love cupcakes is because of the amazingly creamy, buttery icing. The icing here is harder and can absolutely not be described as creamy. It's still a nice place and the cupcakes are presented so well that I'm sure I will be enticed into trying them again.

A couple of years ago at a dear friend's 21st I watched the cake be presented with a flourish. Chocolate again, I thought. They managed to overcharge me once too, but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it and ruin everyone else's day by holding up the line. The menu is expansive, and vegan- and GF-friendly, and the chia pudding and avocado toast I've gotten have been quite tasty, though the bread in the latter was a bit tough, which isn't a good thing for a bakery. Honestly, some things I grade on a curve because Australia sucks at them, but breakfast is the other way around: the bar is quite high. There are two other places that consistently execute similar things better just on this street. And another prominent one I still haven't tried. So I may come back, but I have to say that while they are offering some good stuff, the price is too high and the service is too low to be rated alongside the best cafes in West End.

Decades of French influence in the SE Asian country have rendered their boulangeries tres bien! Kim Thanh Hot Bread are a fine example of affordable and quality cheap eats in the heart of the cosmopolitan melting pot that is West End. The baguettes are crunchy on the outside with a soft inner which manages to be substantial enough without being either too chewy or too airy. A heated display houses a good selection of pies and sausage rolls, most under $3, which offer value for money far superior to your average service station. But the star of the show for me (and legions of others) are their famous pork and salad rolls. They are made fresh on request, and though the ingredients in and of themselves are rather humble sounding (pork luncheon meat, carrot, cucumber, coriander, chilli and a kind of pork liverwurst on a bread roll) combined they add up to more than the sum of their parts. The fragrant coriander and fresh salad adds a delicate counterpoint to the two kinds of pork. Be warned, that if you ask for chilli, they can tend to pile it on. Usually I will specify "a little bit of chilli, please". The staff are very cheery and accommodating, and sometimes after a big night at the local pub I'll pass them doing their first early morning bake in the wee hours If you have the right change handy they usually don't mind selling you something freshly baked, which is undoubtedly the best drunken munchies around!

Typically however I'd order poached eggs on toast, sausages and mushrooms here - because I love a standard hot breakfast, no matter what time of day. By 10:15, nothing had arrived, so we enquired - apparently we had been "forgotten." The Croissant arrived about five minutes later. My breakfast didn't arrive for another ten minutes. By that time, my wife had to leave for an appointment. I ate alone and had to walk home. The meal was bad. The soft boiled eggs were hard boiled. My croissant was so over-cooked, it was inedible and crumbly all the way through. The only saving grace was the bread and jam.
