Don't be swayed by the neon 'Open' sign, it is actually a really decent bakery. The staff are super friendly are always happy to have a chat and the shop is owned and run by locals. Most importantly, the breads and produce is baked daily and always taste really fresh. They have a good range of different breads like sour dough, pastries and cakes although I am yet to try the cakes. Definitely worth trying if you are in the area.

It is tucked right down the end of the strip and I think it might get overlooked a little. It is true you do pass a number of café's and food places before you get to it. Personally, I fall into the vanilla cake category but the Welsh Lady is the only cake shop that has the ability to make me question my allegiance to Team Vanilla. If you're a fan of chocolate cake, the muddier, richer, and more decadent the better, then the Welsh Lady is your holy grail. Her deep, dark mud cakes are so moist and dense that it's almost like she's mixed dark chocolate mousse into the batter. Most of my friends fall into Team Chocolate and I've become very used to being served a piece of chocolate birthday cake at parties and leaving it on the plate half finished. A couple of years ago at a dear friend's 21st I watched the cake be presented with a flourish. Chocolate again, I thought. I had to admit that it was a beautiful looking cake, covered in huge, elaborate chocolate curls and sprouting sparkly butterflies and stars on silver stems but I didn't expect my tastebuds to enjoy it as much as my eyes were. After one bite of the cake I knew there'd be no half-eaten leftovers on my plate this time. Through a mouthful of mud cake I demanded to know where my friend had gotten such a cake. The Ormiston Bakery has heaps for under $5 like breads, buns, coffee and even fruit salad. So far, I have not bought anything that hasn't been fresh and tasty. I really like their white bread plus every time I go, they is always a lot of temping looking chocolate slices and baked sweets that try to sway me and usually do if it is in the afternoon.

I have never been a fan of Brumby's or Baker's Delight with their jam and cream buns, cheesymite…read morescrolls and date scones. I prefer to go to specialist patisseries for baked goods and breads. Bumbleebee Bakery at Eight Mile Plains is the exception to the rule. As a bakery, it does a mean trade on meat pies, sausage rolls and those nasty, artery blocking jam and cream buns. There are also some scrumptious cakes and macaroons available. The macaroons are $2.20 each or six for $13. They come in an assortment of flavours and the fillings are more buttery than creamy. There is also a small Chinese baked goods section with sweet breads filled with red bean paste, BBQ pork buns and coconut buns. It's sort of like a sampler selection from Breadtop. To top it off, the staff are always friendly and cheerful. Usually they're out the back whipping up fresh new cakes but will immediately bustle out as soon as you ring the bell. What more can one ask from a neighbourhood bakery? Bumblebee gets five out of five from me for being the first decent bakery on Brisbane's far South side.
