The establishment relatively recently came under new management. It was previously one of West End's numerous Vietnamese bakeries, and while it remains a bakery the new owners seem to be going for more of an up-market French boulangerie vibe. I ordered a filled baguette and a takeaway Di Bella coffee. The delivery of the baguette was instantaneous and while I waited for my coffee I didn't stand on ceremony, biting into the baguette and assessing their work. The bread itself was quite good, with a slight glaze to the crust and a pleasantly chewy inner. The toppings - chicken and avocado - fairly well-executed for a simple combination. The coffee however took too long to arrive, causing me concern about whether I'd be late for my appointment. What should for an experienced barista take 1-2 minutes tops took more like 4-5. Even worse, when the coffee arrived, it was insipid and milky, leading me to think the maker either didn't dose enough coffee into the group-head or used an insufficient one-shot for the large cup. Either way, it was a deflating first coffee for the day. The price also seemed a bit excessive at close to $12 for the coffee and baguette. Considering I could get a tasty roll significantly cheaper at one of the several Vietnamese bakeries in the neighbourhood, if I go back here it will probably be to buy bread for home use.

I couldn't decide between a Miss Piggy cupcake, or the one with the strawberry cheescake icing (the latter ended up winning the coin toss), so I took it, along with my beautifully creamy cappacino, to devour on the small patio outside. And the cake? Well this is where I differ to most other people so far. I thought it was Ok...but I'm going to go off piste here and say that it was most definitely not the best I've eaten. (I've had better in...gasp...Shingle Inn). I was definitely more taken with the cuteness of the cafe than the cake itself. It should have been fluffier, the icing should have been tastier... Maybe I should have gone with the Miss Piggy after all???

The pink and white theme only adds to the cute factor, along with making it quite impossible for straight men to frequent this place. Inside is just as adorable, with a cosy little booth to one side and a display cabinet full of various cupcake flavours. There are many flavours to choose from; more traditional ones like chocolate and some fancier varieties such as marble, each of which has a chocolate seashell perched on the carefully iced top. I absolutely love seashells but when it comes to cupcakes I believe it's the original and the best, so I chose a vanilla flavoured one. I have to say I was disappointed. The base was delicious and exactly what I would expect of a cupcake, even if it was a little heavy, but the icing was not. The main reason I love cupcakes is because of the amazingly creamy, buttery icing. The icing here is harder and can absolutely not be described as creamy. It's still a nice place and the cupcakes are presented so well that I'm sure I will be enticed into trying them again.

I once called in just to get a quiche which is ridiculous because that's probably the last thing this business is known for (it was amazing for your information), and walked out with 3 slices of cake, 3 Banoffe pies and 4 tarts. I took half of them home and the other half to Uni with me and before I could even explain to everyone what they were, they were gone. The Welsh Lady is a deceptive temptress who lures you in with her unassuming shop front, tucked away in Rosalie and STEALS YOUR WALLET AND YOUR WAISTLINE! Eventually returning both, one thinner, the other thicker (I'll let you guess which is which). Everything they bake here makes you want to quit life and die from a decadent, gluttonous overdose of sugary wonderment. Specializing in cakes to order they have everything you can imagine and more. Words can't do this place justice, so if you are wanting the perfect wedding or birthday cake, or simply just something sweet for any type of celebration The Welsh Lady should be your first port of call. P.S The Banoffe pies are out of this world, go now and get yourself one before they are deemed illegal.

Personally, I fall into the vanilla cake category but the Welsh Lady is the only cake shop that has the ability to make me question my allegiance to Team Vanilla. If you're a fan of chocolate cake, the muddier, richer, and more decadent the better, then the Welsh Lady is your holy grail. Her deep, dark mud cakes are so moist and dense that it's almost like she's mixed dark chocolate mousse into the batter. Most of my friends fall into Team Chocolate and I've become very used to being served a piece of chocolate birthday cake at parties and leaving it on the plate half finished. A couple of years ago at a dear friend's 21st I watched the cake be presented with a flourish. Chocolate again, I thought. I had to admit that it was a beautiful looking cake, covered in huge, elaborate chocolate curls and sprouting sparkly butterflies and stars on silver stems but I didn't expect my tastebuds to enjoy it as much as my eyes were. After one bite of the cake I knew there'd be no half-eaten leftovers on my plate this time. Through a mouthful of mud cake I demanded to know where my friend had gotten such a cake. 'MULSH NADY' she replied, her mouth was just as full as mine. 'Huh?'. She swallowed her chocolate-y mouthful and said 'Welsh Lady'. I nodded, swallowed, and went back for seconds.

For one thing, they've been woefully inefficient with service on both of the mornings I visited. People wait at the counter to order for far too long, and another line of people sits and glares towards the kitchen waiting for food. For a breakfast place, speed is awfully important; most of us customers have work/school to get to and we're eating out because we want to be full quickly. They managed to overcharge me once too, but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it and ruin everyone else's day by holding up the line. The menu is expansive, and vegan- and GF-friendly, and the chia pudding and avocado toast I've gotten have been quite tasty, though the bread in the latter was a bit tough, which isn't a good thing for a bakery. Honestly, some things I grade on a curve because Australia sucks at them, but breakfast is the other way around: the bar is quite high. There are two other places that consistently execute similar things better just on this street. And another prominent one I still haven't tried. So I may come back, but I have to say that while they are offering some good stuff, the price is too high and the service is too low to be rated alongside the best cafes in West End.

The banh mi was still good - and very good value at $11 for the crispy roast pork version. The roll seems a little larger than the standard banh offering, however I think that the next time I visit I'll ask them to hold the sauce. I don't like the sweet hoisin flavour and it makes the roll very soggy. Decades of French influence in the SE Asian country have rendered their boulangeries tres bien! Kim Thanh Hot Bread are a fine example of affordable and quality cheap eats in the heart of the cosmopolitan melting pot that is West End. The baguettes are crunchy on the outside with a soft inner which manages to be substantial enough without being either too chewy or too airy. A heated display houses a good selection of pies and sausage rolls, most under $3, which offer value for money far superior to your average service station. But the star of the show for me (and legions of others) are their famous pork and salad rolls. They are made fresh on request, and though the ingredients in and of themselves are rather humble sounding (pork luncheon meat, carrot, cucumber, coriander, chilli and a kind of pork liverwurst on a bread roll) combined they add up to more than the sum of their parts. The fragrant coriander and fresh salad adds a delicate counterpoint to the two kinds of pork. Be warned, that if you ask for chilli, they can tend to pile it on. Usually I will specify "a little bit of chilli, please". The staff are very cheery and accommodating, and sometimes after a big night at the local pub I'll pass them doing their first early morning bake in the wee hours If you have the right change handy they usually don't mind selling you something freshly baked, which is undoubtedly the best drunken munchies around!

I'd much rather have actual cheese in my roll rather than cheese sauce, which made the roll taste too much like it came from McDonald's or some other low quality fast food shop.
