What started out as a late lunch while discovering the hillside town of Peccioli. We had ducked in to pick a few pastries from the shining cold-case, and saw that there we tables open, so we said..."Wanna...?" We were so impressed with the food, the savory waffle, the steak tartar, the cheesecake and pastries. The atmosphere and loving family service made us feel like we were locals who had stopped into our regular place. We finished with a rich cup of coffee and Ferretti's famous Biscotti. Those biscotti are sooooo delicious that we had to buy a couple of containers of them for the road.... they traveled with us throughout Italy and we hoarded them for morning coffee each day. Our waiters were the sons of the owners, and they were so charming. They shared with us some of their own travels, especially in the U.S. (our home). Our advice; roam the farmers' market in the town square and, right there, stop into Pasticceria Ferretti. They even have a nice sidewalk seating area in that pedestrian only area. P.S. The town has a great parking garage with a famous modern-art foot bridge.... memorable, photogenic!

The service can be slow since there is only one waitress, however, the genuine experience, food and atmosphere is fantastic. There is no wine list, no specials written. The chef is amazing guy, perhaps 80 years old and shows how passionate he is about his restaurant and folks enjoying his cooking. The day we were there, one of the specials was tagliatelle with fresh truffles. The chef actually comes out after the waitress brings out the food and grinds the truffle over your plate. He looked so proud and happy while doing it too. The antipasto was the best one we had (hands down) and their pasta bolognese was so good that we ordered the gnocchi as well. Everything is home made and prepared to order, hence why it takes a while. We will definitely be back again (come to this region every other year)

We were told that since we did not have reservations, we should expect such a service, premium service (all food arriving at the same time) is exclusive to people with reservations, however, we did notice guests that had reservations getting their own utensils and menus an a bit annoyed. Some of the food was very good, unfortunately, not all. One dish was described as Wildboar. It tasted, to us like beef, poor quality beef at that (good enough for Americans). The staff insisted that the meat was high quality wild-boar and we were not sophisticated enough to know the difference. (We are sure it was not boar) Please try it, I assume they're service is going to be much better than the night we dined, it was a pretty epic failure on the wait staff and kitchen. The restaurant fills up with reservations for two seatings, and from the moment we sat down the pace felt rushed. We ordered drinks and a starter while deciding on the rest, but multiple staff members kept coming by trying to take our full order. It felt like they were pushing to move things along quickly. There were a couple positives. The chicken livers to start were quite tasty and something we didn't see often on other menus. The primi were underwhelming. The pasta didn't taste fresh like many other trattorias in Siena, and the dishes overall were just average. The lasagna in particular was mushy, and the sauces didn't stand out. The secondi were slightly better -- pork ribs, Barolo-braised beef, and a "small chicken" -- but still nothing that justified the higher prices. They do have an underground wine cellar built into a cave, which is interesting to see, but there are other places in Siena with much larger and more impressive cellar spaces. Also worth noting, they add a "10% tax" charge rather than the typical €2 coperto per person. Overall, a rushed and fairly mediocre meal at a higher price point. With so many better places to eat in Siena, this is one I'd skip.

Nonetheless, getting a reservation within their allotted window was actually quite easy. As soon as we arrived, we KNEW the sunset would be unrivaled. It was the perfect Tuscan sunset. I'll start with the food: fantastic. We had the ragu, a beef filet, steak carpaccio, and marinated tomatoes. zero complaints - everything was perfectly simple and truly delicious. The service was next level: from the giant glass of digestif presented to my father-in-law for his birthday to the round of complimentary desserts and limoncello, the service was full of joy! As we left, our server was sharing some personal tales with us. He really bonded with my father-in-law and ended up gifting him a bottle of wine that had familial significance/connection between us! We were so grateful for this special experience and have the signed bottle sitting out still today.
