We stopped by Hosmer Grove on our way down from the Haleakala Summit and are glad we did! There was a short nature trail with a lot to see -- felt like an old growth forest which was dramatically different than the landscape up at the top. Seems like a great place to camp as well although we didn't do that. read more

The hosmer trail is a half mile loop to observe non-native trees, planted before the park's establishment, and native shrubland. It's also a unique habitat for honeycreepers found nowhere else on earth. read more

Locals recommended we drive by Hosmer Grove on our way to Haleakalā~! Loved this short detour. We spent maybe 45 mins walking the short loop trail and sightseeing. Birds are constantly darting from tree to tree-- waaaay overhead and nowhere within reach, but still fun to see and hear (so much chirping). Along the trail are signs labeling tree origins and species, most trees being non-native from Europe and mainland. Near the end of the loop are a few binoculars (free to use!) and benches to take in the view of the valley below. Bathrooms available at the parking lot. Nearly no one here around 4pm Sunday, so we enjoyed a tranquil hike surrounded by only birdsong and the breeze. read more

A must see and bring the kiddos! Loved coming back here after a very long time. Many birds and the smells of eucalyptus was incredible peaceful and calming short walk! Take your binoculars for viewing of the i'iwi and apanane - birds are majestically~sweet! Must stop at Kula Lode for breakfast or lunch! Good fun! read more

First come first serve pretty much by the entrance near the visitors center on top of mountain. No need for permit, and the sites are not marked. They have bathroom but no shower. Due to a lot of cloud, it rained on and off throughout the night. I recommend a good sturdy tent that can handle rain, we should have bought a tarp to put above our tent as it soaked through to our sleeping bags in the middle of the night and made things a lot colder than it already was. There isn't much of a view but you're one step closer to getting to see the sunrise when you make the drive up to the summit. Now though you need to make a reservation or else you can't park your car. read more

Nice place to stop by and go for a short hike. You get see plenty of tree varieties. It was recommended by Shaka guide ( self guided tour) you can purchase by downloading the app and select the Haleakala park tour for $5. We enjoyed the hike to see all the plant life. Some of the plants are marked with names and origins. As many of the plant in the grove are non- native Hawaiian plants. read more

So the website didn't give us the details, about having two separate tickets... reservation for sunrise AND camping... We woke up like 3am to get here and so we could start our hike, which is 11 hours and 10 minutes... get there by 3-5pm. So the woman who work there, we handle her a paper of reservations before we could get in and that woman explained us that we need a sunrise reservation as well. We told her that the website didn't say anything about that. And you know what she said to us? "Not my problem" and literally gave us an attitude! With wave hands she throw!! That's not okay, which ruin our mood and our vacation. Please do a better job at handle confusion situation!!! Don't give an attitude when people were so excited to start adventure at Haleakala!! If you don't like the job very much, don't take it out on us! read more

If you paid for any other state camping in Maui (25$) you can go in any other state camping for free. So as this was our second camping we sleeped there for free. First arrived first served. We arrived around 4pm to see that the very small camping was already full. There is less then 20 spots so.. arrive early, most of the terrain is in angle so it can be very tricky to have a nice spot. This campground is a nice change from the usual Maui scene. First off, it's COLD. It can be 85°f at sea level, and it will be no hotter than 50°f up at the site. Massive eucalyptus trees on one side with a nice nature trail walk through, and a decent view of the sunset on the other. (Though I do recommend heading to the summit for sunset, only a 20min drive) As for the camp sites themselves, they are fairly simple. First-come first-serve basis, elevated coal BBQs, fresh water and two restrooms near-by. (Drop toilets) At times it can be tricky to find a level camping spot, so get here while it's still light out. Otherwise, I highly recommend this place! read more

Convenient campground right by the entrance of Haleakala National Park at 8,000 ft elevation. Registration and Fee: Free camping without permit for up to 3 days on a first come first serve basis. No need for any sort of registration. When I was here in early March the campgrounds had ample space and was not crowded. Temperature: Temperatures drop to about 40 degrees at night during winter. Facilities: Vault toilets, running potable water, sink, and picnic area available. Recreation: Convenient stay for sunrise and sunset viewing at the Haleakala summit which is only 15 minutes away by drive. Also wonderful if you want to stargaze at night in the park. read more

This is my very favorite place on Maui. About 5000 feet elevation. Small campground in the Haleakala National Park. It has a well developed mature forest that has several species of Hawaiian honey creepers . The best time to see them is just when the sun peeks over the mountain . About 8 am to 10 am. The birds congregate on the small areas that the sun strikes the trees and then opens the flowers so they can eat. read more

I went on the Wakamoi Cloud Forest Tour (occurs every Monday and Thursday for the 3 hour hike.) If you'd like the longer hike there is one on the third Sunday of every month. Most of the time you will just be observing nature. The hike itself is not very long at all. You will see species that are only native to Maui HI in the cloud forest (it is a part of their niche.) This hike also will remind people to take care of the environment so that future generations may enjoy it. Take pictures, wear comfortable worn in hiking shoes, and wear a jacket. Tip: Call the National Park Service 808-572-4459 to get on the list for the tour one week before the day of the hike. read more

Stayed here on a Saturday night in May. The campground itself wasn't anything special, but for the price (free) you definitely can't complain. It is just past the entrance gate to the park, just short distance down a side road. There are pit toilets, running water (sink and spigot), and a few picnic tables. The area itself is pretty small, but you can definitely cram in quite a few tents. We arrived around 6 PM and there we just a couple spots left. A youth group claimed many of them and were pretty loud for a while, but calmed down at a reasonable hour. We had our alarm set for 3:30 AM and planned to leave our site setup to save time in getting to the summit for sunrise. To our surprise, there was already a steady stream of cars heading up the road ahead of us. There was still some parking left though but I imagine it filled up pretty quickly. One other note at the campground is that it is extremely wet. We setup our tent on a firm mud patch and there was a steady rain/mist (basically you're in a cloud) that kept everything damp. Make sure to bring sufficient rain gear to make it through your stay. read more

I've driven past this campground on the way up to the summit many times, but never thought to stop here. Until one day, the hubs & I decided to check it out. We didn't go here to camp, but we went to grill some steaks, and check out the nature trail. We initially were planning on hiking, but the sun was going down, and we still had food on the grill. It's a nice little spot with a grassy area to set up your tent and camp. There are several grills around the area for campers to use. Firewood is best. There's a decent sized parking lot, and there is also no permit required for camping (3 day limit). It was clean and areas were well kept and maintained. There are restrooms, and water fountains to fill up your water bottles if needed. The scenery is always breathtaking and the sunset was amazing. Wish I got pictures before my phone died. Will return again with the kids next time to walk the trail. Also, this place gets freezing cold! Bring a thick sweater and shoes. Also be prepared for rain. Weather is lovely, and very cozy next to the campfire. Perfect for s'mores and hot cocoa! read more

Hosmer Grove Campground is a drive up campground inside of Halekelaka National Park on Maui. You cannot make reservations for this campsite, just show up and set up your tent in the first come, first served spots. There is a small trail (about 1 mile) right next to the campsite. There is water (watch out, it is COLD) in the form of one water hose hookup spot and two sinks outside of the bathrooms. There are two toilet facilities, both are drop toilets. The rangers service these regularly, but they aren't all that clean. It does get cold here at night (the elevation is somewhere around 4500ft I believe) but luckily most of the wind is blocked by the trees. There is a $10 fee to get into the national park for three days (free for military), but camping is free. If you are vacationing in Maui and you want to keep your trip low cost, look in to spending a couple of nights up here. Plan ahead, there are no food or gas establishments for miles. And it does get cold. read more

Unlike the National Parks in the continental states, there are no RVs nor RV hook-ups in Hosmer Grove. That's worth five-stars, right? Plus, you can make the half-hour drive (one-way) drive for both the sunset and sunrise at the crater summit. Very quiet campground, except for the wind in the trees. No matter how windy the lowlands or the summit, the campground is protected by the - you guessed it - grove of trees. read more
