This place was on my radar in my quest for good poutine that is locally available. After checking several reviews online, I decided to check this place out. (Take out) Impressions: all the positive reviews may be about the volume and price than delicacy. We ordered: # Crispy buffalo chicken sandwich (side: onion rings) $13: The chicken was supposed to be crispy, but it was not. Yes, it was take-out so that may be the factor. However, the chicken was drenched with sauce... the focus was volume (with onion rings) and sauce, rather than the texture. # Single dawg (Side: beans) $26.50: Came with 1/4 pound Beef Brisket and 1/4 pound pulled pork, drizzled with HD bbq sauce. And 3 bone St. Louis Ribs. Again, huge volume for the price. Abundant French fries. But the brisket texture was mediocre. Pulled pork was tender, but beef brisket and ribs were crunchy at the edges and inside was a bit dry. It came with 2 slider buns, regular small buns which were grocery store level. # Poutine (large, $9): Huge, but nothing special otherwise. The gravy did not taste natural, but good enough. As good as fast food chain. The fries are homestyle. I did not try their wings which are their most popular items with variety of flavors. May be I want to try them. Been going to this place periodically for the last three or four years now. The service is still good and there's plenty of free parking. The food had been really good but the last two times have been disappointing. I usually order the beef, brisket, pork, ribs, and chicken wings. Not sure if they changed chefs or recipes but the BBQ just isn't as tasty as it once was. The fries are still really good though. read more

Probably my favourite fried chicken place of all time! The only place where I don't cringe if I grab a piece of breast meat - it's always cooked to juicy perfection! I've never had a dry piece of chicken from Horn Dawgs, and we've been getting them for years. I love getting their brisket, but sub the sweet bbq sauce with the savoury gravy. It looks dry, but it's always melt in your mouth tender. We've also tried (but not pictured this time): ribs, poutine, onion rings, brisket poutine, Baby Dawg combo, nachos, sausage sampler, and the Beef Rib Dinner. The Beef Rib was amazing, fork tender on a huge bone, something you'd see on the Flintstones dinner table, but highly recommend if you're treating yourself to something special. read more

Horn Dawgs does a brisk take out business, and I can understand why. We ordered the Puppy Dawg Meal and got an amazing quantity of food. Jenna, who took my order, was friendly and professional, efficient, but willing to give her time and opinion to help me decide on the order. Now that's good service. This was my first time here, and it is great to have some quality BBQ so close by in Pickering. Main event: The Ribs. These ribs are amazing. I had them sauced with the terrific house sauce (sauce so good that I bought a jarful - Jenna told me that they just made it this morning!). The ribs are tender, but have a nice tug and chew so that you know it's meat (as opposed to the fall-off-the-bone, melt in your mouth kind that make you feel like you are eating stewed meat - kind of like what happens when I make ribs for my family). The sauce complimented the meat well, enhancing the flavour while allowing the porky rib quality to shine through. I can't say enough about them. The chicken was as close to perfect as I have had. On its own, some might call it under spiced, but you can add that yourself. Personally, I like it just as Horn Dawgs makes it: a simple, very crispy, savoury coating with moist chicken inside. The white meat was really juicy and tasty! Pulled pork was great. Some nice, crispy, lightly charred bits to give some contrast to the moist pork meat. We have quite a bit left over, because everyone was all over the ribs and the chicken. My advice about the pork: ask for your sauces (of course I recommend the house sauce) on the side, so that, if you have left-overs, the sauce doesn't make them soggy. Just sauce each portion to your preference, just after preparing the portion. Our sides also lived up to the expectations set by the mains; smooth, creamy mashed potato, sweet and savoury cornbread; really stand-out baked beans, with a sweet but smoky flavour; fries that actually tasted like potatoes! To top it off, excellent service, easy parking and (for me) a convenient location. It is somewhat hidden behind a Thai food restaurant. It is just east of the Pickering Go station. Great Service and great food! If you are in the Pickering area and craving some BBQ, skip the big chain restaurants (abundant in Pickering) and head on over to Horn Dawgs! So glad this place lived up to the expectations I had from its rave reviews. This is one of my new favourite food places in Pickering. I pre-ordered on their website for pick up on a Saturday and was so pleased with the food. I ordered the beef brisket tacos ($14) with Mac & cheese as side while my bf got the brisket poutine with the spicy bbq HD sauce ($15). Everything was packed nicely, my tacos stayed in place and weren't soggy at all. They deffff don't skimp out on the brisket. We were both so satisfied with the portions and not to mention the fair pricing. The tacos were amazing. The components were all perfect together and the brisket was so soft and delicious. After many travels to great BBQ places in the American south, I was apprehensive about trying Horn Dawgs. I wasn't sure if this tiny place in Pickering could compete with the big boys. Imagine my sheer delight when I was wowed by every single thing that we ordered - tender brisket smothered in sauce, fall off the bone ribs, fresh cut fries that were expertly fried, and crispy onion rings with just the right amount of batter and perfect onion size. We ordered online off their website for pickup. There was no option for what type of brisket (fatty or lean) but I felt like we received a mix of both. Usually I go for fatty to avoid any chance of the learn meat being dry, but there was no need with this place it was all really tasty. Another thing I noticed was that they have a lot of daily deals that aren't listed on the menu. They were on the walls in store however. If you're interested in these, I'd suggest giving them a call. The shop is a little hidden at night since there are no light up signs but yes, it's in an industrial looking plaza. Google Maps was able to take us there with no issues. The lady that was working there was actually kind of snappy but the cooks in the back that brought out our order were really nice. Will be back! read more

How have I not reviewed this place yet?! It's such a solid spot to go for lunch/dinner anytime you're craving some delicious bbq. The portions are massive, the service is friendly, and the food is delicious. I love getting their bbq sauce and using it at home for my own cooking. Love the ribs here and pulled pork. We usually order a poutine of sorts to share and it's so filling. The wings are also really good. The owner is really nice. Large side of Mac n Cheese- $5 - Pretty decent although wish it was more cheesy Large side of Coleslaw- $5 - Creamy, crunchy, a bit peppery slaw. Found this hidden gem on yelp! It's tucked away beside pickering go train station, and quite busy for an extreme cold alert Thursday evening. Throughout the time that we are here, there's always people coming in and going out for dine-in and take-out. I loved my pulled pork extreme poutine. Asked for no cheese and extra gravy so my customization really can't be called poutine! The portion is huge for the price. I barely finished a quarter and took the rest to go. There's a huge serving of pulled pork, and the spicy BBQ sauce made it phenomenal! There's one staff working during the evening, and he was the most friendly person ever! I was craving some seriously authentic BBQ and I was kinda surprised by how delicious it was. Horn dawgs is tucked away in a small service Ontario plaza, I couldn't even see it from the road. I walked in and my mood changed, I walked back into time - super tiny counter restaurant with the menu taking up a whole wall. The smell of sweetness and BBQ was overwhelming. I ordered my favourite thing to order Pulled Pork with coleslaw with a side of Chipotle sauce, Mac & Cheese & a Poutine. All that cost me $18.00 and to me that's hella cheap because in Toronto, all that would have cost me double. The food came by in 10 minutes of me ordering and I went to the best seat; my car! I took one bite and instantly hit with a really good BBQ sauce. It wasn't too smoky and had the perfect hint of sweetness & stickiness. The coleslaw had a nice crunch and the chipotle mayo added a bit of spice. I thoroughly enjoyed the sandwich. I moved on to the Mac & Cheese and was very disappointed. It tastes like chicken noodle soup, and wasn't at all cheesy. The Poutine saved the day with cheesy curds and a really good homemade gravy. Supreme southern bbq. Love the Eastern European owner and his charming accent. He's kind and genuine. I also enjoy hearing the Eastern euro-pop music from the kitchen. Now the food - it's the best southern bbq in the GTA hands down. My search is over. This place is my go to joint. The wings are spectacular. And the ribs are killer. The only complaint I have is that the joint has really short hours. Some days they close at 7pm which means last order is 630pm. I work downtown and by the time my train arrives I can't make it over in time. Other than that, this place is a hidden gem. Who would have thought Pickering would be the location for the gtas finest bbq wings and ribs. Please let me know of any other options you may believe is worthy of a visit and I will try it out. This whole in the wall BBQ place is run by one of the nicest staff I've met (BBQ staff always seem happy?). I've tried a few dishes here, but I come back for the hot and sweet wings. They are just fantastic. The fries are to die for. On Fridays you can choose from any of the weekly specials. The prices on those are insanely cheap for what you get. I live pretty far away or I'd be here every week. That would likely kill me, but I'd die happy. They have car club hangouts in the summer apparently. Looks fun. read more

The Can't Decide poutine ($11) is perfect for indecisive people like me who just wants to try everything xD these yummy fries are drenched with hot gravy, cheese curds and topped with half pulled pork and half beef brisket! So evil, so unhealthy but super delicious (my forever dilemma)! However, I was a little bit disappointed because the pulled pork was a bit cold :( it just ruined the poutine experience a little bit Fiancé ordered the beef brisket sammich. He was fairly disappointed at the portion. Also, the buns were still cold. Maybe they weren't quite ready for business since we came at 12ish (they open at 12pm)? HUGE HUGE HUGE PORTIONS!!! It was almost as if they were closing for the night and they were giving me whatever they had left over. But it wasn't the case at all since they didn't close for another three hours. I consider myself a big eater so I ordered a beef brisket sandwich $10 and a pulled pork poutine $10 like its a Big Mac Combo. I thought to myself; I could handle a sandwich with some fries no problem. When my food arrived I was blown away at how big everything was and I knew I had a monster of a challenge to overcome. For those who watched How I met Your Mother, "Challenge Accepted!" The beef brisket was super tender and moist. It was just a simple bun with BBQ sauce and loads of tender, flake apart meat. I was already getting full after finishing the sandwich. And if the regular meat dosage wasn't enough they even have a double the meat add-on for $6. I can't even image how big that sandwich would look. The pulled pork poutine was even bigger and about twice as big as the sandwich. Loads of pulled pork and I'm sure the meat to fries ratio was 40% meat, 60% fries. The only minuscule thing I could complain about is that there wasn't enough cheese curds. I'm happy to say that I did eat everything on my own. I did have take a breather in between and took half the poutine home. Right when I got home within 10 minutes I promise you I did finish the rest. I was uncomfortably full and itus kicked in right away so I had to take a 5 minute power nap. Excellent food, excellent service, affordable prices, amazing portions, lots of parking and plus its close to my work. We tried their brisket sammich and the ribs at the Pickering ribfest a few weeks ago but weren't quite that impressed. The ribs were chewy and dry and the brisket was roughly pulled/chopped with some seriously large chunks of meat to tear off (this would have been fine had the brisket been cut against the grain but it was not). I thought the flavour of the smoke and the sauce was just ok. After a quick visit to the Miller waste yard, we found that HD BBQ was nearby so we decided to give them another try and ordered wings & 1/2 rack combo with fries and a 2 little pigs and a cow sandwich. The sandwich arrived first and it was a much more pleasant experience than the brisket sammich we had encountered a few weeks back. The pulled pork was juicy without being too stringy, couldn't really detect the large chunks of brisket that was too cumbersome to eat and the bacon that topped off the sandwich was just a yummy bonus. The ribs fared much better this time as well. I'm guessing quality control at ribfests can be rather difficult and I would like to think the HD BBQ maintains this quality of ribs on site. The ribs were not fall-off-the-bone tender as they should be and the sauce provided on each table makes for a customizable ribbing experience. The chicken wings were your run of the mill deep fried and tossed in sauce kind but also enjoyable enough. Served alongside some excellent fresh cut fries, the meal was very very satisfying. Do I think the HD BBQ is the be all and end all for BBQ in the GTA? No, not really. Will I return for more? Sure, if I'm in the area and don't feel like driving further to Buster Rhinos. read more

In the middle of heavy snow from my friends house at Richmond Hill we decided to meet up at this little place in Pickering just so we can try out what a rib fest contender does outside the rib fest. Pinned close to the Pickering Go station in a very unassuming plaza that is hard to find during heavy snow conditions we had found it, and just in time for us to get the last few orders in of the day since they close at 7pm. We're happy they were gracious enough to let us stay past closing hours since we arrived there around 6:30ish due to the slow traffic. The ribs didn't disappoint. I was munching on them like I would at the rib fest. Though it is still not the winner for me when it comes to ribs during the rib fest (that title goes to Tennessee Fatbacks BBQ) during the rest of the year this place will be my choice. It is definitely worth the drive there as the quality just blows Outback and Montana's away (and a closer drive than Tennessee). As a plus, they also serve Dad's Root Beer (possibly the world's best root beer that you don't make yourself) out of a bottle. Next time I come here after my diet, I will bring at least three friends as two is not enough to try out the variety of food they have. read more

I had their pulled pork poutine and usually that's a winning meal for me but their pork was dry and tasted strange and did not add a thing to the poutine. The gravy was okay but nothing special. They came, they catered. We had an end of summer work lunch and Horn Dawgs was called to feed the masses. We ordered Ribs, Mac N Cheese, Coleslaw, Brisket and Fried Chicken. First, they DO NOT SKIMP. The trays were huge and we ALL took food home. The biggest hits were the chicken and mac n cheese. The chicken was not greasy and the batter was to die for. We wished there were 2 trays of the chicken. The mac n cheese was creamy and cheesy as all heck. The ribs were large and meaty. The brisket did not require chewing. They also gave us a bottle of sauce, in case we were feeling extra saucy. We would absolutely call them again. The service was great and the food arrived hot. They were very upfront about how large the trays were and advised against ordering more for the size of our crowd. Appreciated it! Highly recommended! read more

Really great place - you'll drive by it in the strip mall if you aren't looking for it. Very casual spot, seems family run, incredibly friendly. Portions are big enough to share (like most BBQ) - our ribs were excellent, we tried all the sides and loved everything. I wasn't crazy about the coleslaw - a little too vinegary for me. Came here with a friend on a Wednesday evening. As we were first-timers here, we had loads of questions, especially on what to order if we wanted to try a bit of everything. The poutine had a dark, rich, thick gravy that complimented the crispy fries and cheese curds. Quite a generous portion was packed into a box beside my ribs. The ribs were tender, fall off the bone with a delicious rib sauce. The beef brisket was a little disappointing but that's only because I came in with expectations after seeing a picture of freshly sliced brisket with a beautiful red smoke ring around the edge. The brisket my friend and I were served did not look as such; just the average brisket. The medium mac and cheese side was super creamy! Taste is also average. The small side of baked beans I got with my half rack dinner was one of the favourites that night. A certain spice in the beans made it stand out from other baked beans I've tried from other BBQ joints.
