This bookstore deserves more love. It looks like they recently revamped the place and they now have a cafe inside. They have a few tables for you to sit and sip your coffee or read a book. I was pleasantly surprised at how affordable the books were. If you buy 3 books you get 70% off. So I basically ended up getting 3 books for the price of 1. Not to mention, these books are all brand new. I liked the books in the "Staff Picks" area by the front. They don't have as vast as a selection as a Barnes and Noble, so if you are looking for a specific book this isn't the place for you. Do not come here looking for the most recent release because items in the store are all discounted stock and supply. You won't find the most recent Stephen King or almost any Stephen King. You'll not not find the most recent book of almost anything but there are some great titles around the store. There is an extremely eclectic selection throughout. Everything is discounted the more you buy the more you save how to 70%. They have just pulled out a large section of Books to add in a coffee spot which I thoroughly enjoyed a mocha latte. Okay on one hand I really do like this place. The books are new (though they are marked by a marker on the bottom of the pages if you look) and most importantly, the discount is amazing. That being said the setup of this store drives me insane. The books are stacked horizontally (who would have guessed based on the name) but that's part of the problem. It takes longer to browse as a result. Furthermore when you try to see the books on the lower shelves, they are set up further into the shelves so you have to really crouch down to read the titles. Now, I could get past this because the discount is, as mentioned, insane. However, they place books on display in front of these stacks of books, infront of a good portion of them. Basically you have to move the displayed books to see what's in the stack behind them because they are not visible at all. And that stack? It never matches the book displayed. Books by the same author will not be behind the displayed book by that author. This drives me crazy, maybe it's just me. The books also don't appear to be in alphabetical order by the author in the genres which makes browsing extra difficult. Now you can ask the people at the desk if they have a certain book in stock which would be your best bet if you came in with something in mind. Don't be surprised if they don't have it in stock. This isn't Barnes and Noble. If you have time to kill and want to browse this place is great if you can get past the set up. read more

Again, here's another prime example of an "I'm on West 25th Street all the time and how did I never know this was here" moment. So here's the thing. ALL THE BOOKS ARE NEW. Perhaps I was previously dissuaded by their general lack of marketing and old-school sign, but my god, they have a great selection. All of their inventory comes on overstock from publishers. These are new and newer books in perfect shape. Absolutely nothing is used. If you're like me, and you're a bookworm, this place will put you 10 seconds from needing literary rehab. When you walk in, you're going to be shocked at how huge the store is. It goes on and on and on. The stacks are impressively organized and labeled with large chalk signs. When I asked the gal to direct me to feminist prose/women's studies, she knew where to go in 5 seconds. Seriously, if you love books, you could spend HOURS in here. You know how some women "buy shoes"? Well, I buy books. Seriously, Carrie Bradshaw may keep shoes in her oven, but well, I could probably keep books in mine. The discount here is so generous: 50% off the jacket price for (1) book, 60% off (2) books, etc. I tried to maintain some self-control and purchased 2, new, beautiful hardcover books. My total was $19. I was so shocked, I asked her to double check my total out of fear she forgot to scan something... but nope, it was right. This may not be the place to rush to immediately to find that brand new hardcover you saw in The New York Times, but if you're looking for a new book to read, and have the time to wander and peruse, you'll undoubtedly leave with many amazing gems. read more

If you have time to kill and are in the area, it's worth popping in and doing some digging for gems. They sell new books, but you won't be able go in to find specific titles. It's a random assortment of books probably procured from overstock. It's fun if you're not looking for anything, but want to see if you can find anything good. The layout reflects the randomness of the selections- wooden shelves with piles of books with no organization beyond standard categories (ie, travel, biography, history, self help). Nice bookstore! You might not find the exact book you're looking for, but you'll find a book nonetheless with the huge stacks and discounts. As the name goes, the books are arrange horizontally as opposed to the traditional vertical style. This actually makes things a bit easier to find in this store that stretches far to the back. It also just has that "good book store feel"- my very eloquent term for describing that comfy feeling that small business book stores just seem to have. Another huge advantage of this spot is that the more books you buy, the better the discount. However, my one downside to this place is that you may not find that title you were hoping for because of how they seem to purchase discount books in bulk. Which is good if you're searching for a beach read or maybe a former best seller, but maybe not the place if there's that *one* book you were going to pick up. I'm kind of confused by this bookstore. The pricing is interesting, all the books are originally on the high end but then its 50% off the first book, 60% off two, and 70% off three and up so that kind of evens it out. The book selection is random, it seems like last years collection at their original prices. And the staff ignores you, which I really appreciate in a book store. Also, they have some used books towards the back. Quite honestly, I am all for shopping local but I like keeping my book shopping easy. Other local "chains" have better prices. One of my favorite spots to find great books. My most recent find was A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. It is now my new favorite (even though that changes regularly it seems). This place is dangerous. Agreed that it's hit or miss, but the prices are brilliant if you find something you like. Last time I was here, I bought three hardcover cookbooks from some of my favorite UK authors for a grand total of about $30. They also have a good selection of coffee table books, modern fiction, classics, comics, and everything in between. Walking past the book store, it looked sad and sketchy. But I saw the sale sign and my friend insisted we go inside. Sure, it's no Barnes and Noble, but they do have a decent selection of books! Buy 1 for 50% off, 2 for 60% off your TOTAL, and 3 or more for SEVENTY PERCENT OFF your TOTAL! How could any book lover pass that up? They had an updated best seller section, a huge children's section and a little bit of everything in between. Negative: don't go in there set on buying certain books at a discounted price. It's not a library or a Barnes and Noble, think of it more as a hipster book store! Positive: 70% off after buying 3 books!!!! Even if you just wanted one book, you're still paying half! Loved it. The rather large bookseller/proprietor with the big white beard was cordial, though seemingly non-plussed by everything. He barely glanced up from his reading when I walked in the door. The cat is cool. She seemed to want some attention and followed me back into the stacks and meowed until I started petting her. A few minutes later a lady walked in and I overhear her say to the guy, "Where's the cat? She's usually here at the door when I come in. " I yelled, "She's back here with me!" The guy says "Yeah, she's in the back doing some customer service." Without skipping a beat the lady says, "Well, it's about time somebody around here did." They both crack up. Classic. Enormous selection great for browsing away a Saturday. The stock seems kind of organized by subject though a lot of it is in piles and some of it is under plastic tarps. read more

I wasn't quite sure of what to make of this bookstore, to be honest. The idea of it is certainly appealing, but the layout of the books on the shelves left me a little frazzled. The books are organized by genre, but that seems to be as far as it goes. I think they were supposed to also be organized by author within the genres, but it was hard to tell. I don't think everything was in its right place. But that may have been browsing customers' faults. The books are stacked horizontally (get it?) on the shelves, which would be ok, except for the other books that are standing up vertically in front of, and blocking, said stacks. And it's not just like one or two books leaning against or between every other stack. Sometimes I couldn't even see what was in the stacks until I moved a book or two out of the way (which made me feel like I was messing with their display). What made it even more confusing is that the stacked books were often completely different titles and authors than what was prominently facing out on the shelf . You'd definitely have to have a good hour or two to scour the store and get a good sense of what's being offered. But if you do have time to scour, you'll be happy to know there were a LOT of books to sift through. Be forewarned, many of them were duplicates, and most of them were by authors I'd never heard of before. But maybe you go for that sort of thing. And there were gardening books, memoirs, poetry, history books, business books, fiction, kids' books...the store had plenty to give your average reader, as long as you had the time to give wading through it all a shot. What I'm sure draws many visitors to the store (myself included) is the discounts -- 50% off one book, 60% off two, 70% off three. Unfortunately, the more time I spent searching for books, the more it brought down my desire to buy one. I'll probably go back again one day, when I'm feeling more hardcore-browsey. After going to the West Side Market the other day I ventured into Horizontal Books (I believe, from searching for this store online, that there was once another bookstore in its place called, weirdly, "Bookstore on West 25th"). I hadn't visited before, mainly because the inside--in full view from the outside via floor-to-ceiling windows--looked a bit depressed, with no flair whatsoever. The makeshift, plywood bookshelves are unattractive and, unfortunately, give off an unpleasant, "home improvement" odor. However, I quickly learned the appeal of this place, which is that they offer a progressive discount: 50% off one book, 60% off two, 70% off three, etc. So, duh, I bought three books. What, you ask? A Jewish Cookbook - originally $35, a musicology text, still in plastic shrink wrap, that was undoubtedly leftover from a college course, and a book detailing the history of Tiger Stadium (for my husband). The total? $25!! Score! The guys here are nice, and it really is a pretty good store. They do also have a (limited) selection of books on CD. Plus, all the genres are clearly marked on cute chalkboards that introduce each aisle. Basically, if you're in the mood to browse, and if you love the used bookstore appeal, it's a great find. You'll walk out with books you didn't know you wanted. But if you're looking for something specific, better hit up Borders. read more

Ok to be honesty its more like 3 stars or less, but its a bookstore, a physical actual book store in an online world. That alone gets you up to 4. The selection of political books was woefully uninspired, the amount of books on non judeo christian religions were minimal at best and completely absent to be blunt but they did have what looked like a good kids section. Definitely one of the cooler bookstores in the Cleveland area. I almost wrote "used," but nothing here is used, only brand new. It seems like they get extremely frequent shipments of new stuff, because going here from weekend to weekend, their selection will change like crazy. So if you see something here you think you'll like, pick it up then, 'cause it may not be there again. And the deal they have is silly -- buy one book, get half off. Two books, 60 percent off. Three books, 70 percent off. Which means that, for around twenty bucks, you can come out of this place with a huge bagful of stuff. It's not like I needed that coffee table book of the history of the whatever regiment of Akron infantry that fought in the Civil War, but book nuts will recognize the fever that comes with shopping in a place that has a cheap and abundant selection as this. What a cool bookstore! Was walking around Ohio City after a burrito and stopped in here just to check it out. This place sells ALL KINDS of books for really really dirt cheap. Reading a few other reviews - it's not sad or sketchy at all. The staff was very friendly and they have some really weird and unique books. All brand new - it comes from overstock of books I believe. I agree with Rachel. I stepped into this bookstore on a whim after visiting the West Side Market and I'm glad I did. The staff was friendly, but low-key enough to leave me alone to peruse the shelves as long as I wanted. This probably isn't the best place to go if you're looking for a specific book, because there's a good chance they don't have it. But if you like to wander through the aisles and just explore, this place is perfect for that. I ended up getting four completely random books (on cooking, detoxing, meditation, and psychology) for $16. Definitely a fun place to go on a Saturday afternoon. read more

Love the idea behind this bookstore...how they manage to have prices this cheap and stay in business is beyond me, but I'm greatful. They have a nice selection of kids books, but the layout is a little messy and awkward. It sort of feels like a warehouse that really needs stacked. I also wish they would have a better display of new or best sellers or staff favorites or something at the front to really catch my eye from all of the other stuff. All this being said, this place has prices you can't beat and a fairly decent selection of books. Honestly, it looked like a really cool bookstore, but I didn't really have the chance to look around because my group of friends, reuniting from all over the US, ran into some people we knew from a different state and were saying hello. We were then scolded by the person working across the entire store that we were being too loud (just talking). A little unnecessary when there weren't any signs anywhere that specified an appropriate volume level and we weren't in a library, we were in a bookstore... a bookstore without chairs or benches or places that people would sit and read or study, needing quiet. my god, this place is random. Shortly before a recent trip, I finally stopped here for the first time in years. As Rachel mentioned, there's no flair but no biggie. It's simply a haphazard selection of books (and a handful scholarly journals) on wooden shelves organized by subject areas. Would be bumped up to 4 if they had magazines. The pricing scheme is simple: 50% off the (the usually high) retail price, 60% for 2 items, 70% for 3+ items. The staff existed but was more interested in sealing envelopes for their online operation.. As for the selection, it's very random with some extremely narrow niches, with usually 2-10 copies of each item. A spanish/english dictionary specific written for ranchers ?! They got it ! Copies of esoteric academic journals like the Austrian History Yearbook from 1985 ? Yep, they got it ! I specifically checked out the travel, language, and computer sections, there's a few travel guides for random places although not from 2012, some were pretty recent, 2011, others, from 2006.... That fared bit better than computer section which all but maybe a handful were from the early 2000s... (perhaps you still need that Admin Guide for Red Hat !?) I ended picking up a NYT crossword puzzle book [a guilty pleasure] for the plane rides, half off natch. Don't expect to find a bestseller or anything current but Horizontal is worth visiting if you're in OC and interested to pick up some very random things for cheap. A compliment to Visible Voice in Tremont. Hope this place sticks around with the gentrification of Ohio City but note they ARE NOT open on the weekends. read more

This place is awesome. I went with my grandparents and friend to West Side Market and we decided to check it out after seeing some of the reviews on here. The shop has the books labeled on the chalkboards on the wooden shelves, but other than being in the right genre there isn' t much organization. There aren't a lot of books in this establishment but we found 7 books that made us happy. Using the 70% off deal we only spent $44 instead of $144. Will be returning next week to see what other goodies I can find. read more

I order a book from them on Amazon and it was listed as NEW. The copy we received had it's corners bent in, dust jacket roughed up, it was remainder marked and the whole book is warped/bowed. I don't consider this to be "NEW" by any stretch of the imagination. When I contacted them, they gave me a laughable response. Still having go arounds with these yokels. So I have probably walked past this book store hundreds of times and each time I have thought to myself how sad it looks on the outside. Most of the time I couldnt tell if the store was still open but today a friend and I decided to stop in while walking. I was very surprised how cool this store is. The walls are lined with makeshift wood shelving that looks like it belongs in someones unfinished basement but dont let the look fool you, the store itself is amazing. They sell only new books (so no worries that it is all ratty used copies of things) and they do so at huge discounts (50% for 1 book, 60% for 2 books, and 70% for three). Now they wont have every book you are looking for (like a barnes and noble or borders) but they seemed to have a pretty solid selection of new releases and classics. I would definitely suggest stopping in and browsing. I dont think you will regret it. read more
